The Iberian conquest of the Atlantic at the beginning of the sixteenth century had a notable impact on the formation of the new world order in which Christian Europe claimed control over most a considerable part of the planet. This was possible thanks to the confluence of different and inseparable factors: the development of new technical capacities and favorable geographical conditions in which to navigate the great oceans; the Christian mandate to extend the faith; the need for new trade routes; and an imperial organization aspiring to global dominance. The author explores new methods for approaching old historiographical problems of the Renaissance-such as the discovery and conquest of America, the birth of modern science, and the problem of Eurocentrism-now in reference to actors and regions scarcely visible in the complex history of modern Europe: the ships, the wind, the navigators, their instruments, their gods, saints, and demons. The book offers convincing evidence to incorporate the Catholic world of early modernity into the history of modern science. The research is supported by the analysis of not widely studied primary sources such as the sixteenth century Iberian nautical manuals. Through the use of theoretical frameworks such as the Actor Network Theory, the book sheds light on the need to incorporate the role of heterogeneous human actors and artifacts (ships, navigation tools, sails, cannons), natural and geographical agents (ocean currents, winds, the sun, the moon and the stars), and divine entities (gods, daemons and saints) into the political history of early modernity.

La historia colombiana, como la historia mundial, cambia según la interpretación del historiador. Es cierto que la historia no es una disciplina estática, congelada en los textos académicos, en los documentos de archivo o en los libros de las bibliotecas. Estudiar la historia es pensar en un proceso dinámico, discutible y a veces polémico. En este orden de ideas, los libros de historia deben incluir más preguntas que certezas, y por eso es importante escribirlos, divulgarlos y leerlos. Por eso presentamos una nueva historia de Colombia, escrita por colombianos provenientes de diferentes áreas del conocimiento, aunque la mayoría de los capítulos fueron escritos por historiadores. El texto propone una nueva interpretación de la historia de este país desde la perspectiva de diversos autores. Todos los documentos fueron elaborados exclusivamente para este libro, cuyo fin consiste en explorar la complejidad de la historia colombiana desde la época precolombina hasta hoy.Los ensayos tienen un carácter analítico e interdisciplinario, que sugieren una reinterpretación de la historia por parte de los académicos colombianos.Estudiando estos ensayos el lector tendrá la oportunidad de discernir sobre los cambios y las continuidades en la historia de la nación a través del tiempo. Alexander von Humboldt es una figura emblemática de los viajes de exploración en el periódo de la Ilustración, sus escritos sobre América se convirtieron en el paradigma de una nueva mirada sobre el Nuevo Mundo y, en ocasiones, ha sido presentado como el " "segundo descubridor de América " ". La presencia del explorador prusiano en el Nuevo Reino de Granada a comienzos del siglo XIX y su relación con criollos como Francisco José de Caldas, motivan una reflexión sobre la ciencia europea en el contexto colonial. Su obra, para algunos, es una muestra de un aclamado americanismo e incluso se ha argumentado que influyó sobre los movimientosa de emancipación americana. Sin embargo, este libro muestra otra cara de la obra de Humbolt y enseña su importancia política dentro del gran proyecto de la Ilustración europea por comprender, clasificar y ordenar el mundo entero. Alexander von Humbolt, en la medida en que busca el establecimeinto del orden natural, construyó una obra de carácter político en un sentido amplio y profundo que facilita la consolidación de un orden global europeo.

"La mayor cosa después de la creación del mundo, sacando la encarnación y muerte del que lo crió, es el descubrimiento de las Indias".3 Francisco López de Gómara escribió estas palabras en la presentación de su Historia General de las Indias, publicada en 1552. Esta concepción providencial de lo ocurrido, según la cual Dios quiso que España conquistara el Nuevo Mundo para la expansión y triunfo final del cristianismo,4 lejos de ser una idea extravagante para su tiempo, fue ampliamente compartida por los cronistas y cosmógrafos de la Corona española del siglo xvi.5 El año de 1492, tal y como entonces lo entendieron los ibéricos, partió la historia del mundo en dos; cinco siglos después seguimos tratando de entender qué pasó y el mundo no se termina de ajustar a los cambios que se iniciaron en el Atlántico.El mismo López de Gómara afirma en la ya citada presentación de su obra: "toda historia, aunque no sea bien escrita, deleita";6 una afirmación cuestionable, pero conveniente para conservar el ánimo en la pretensión de escribir sobre la increíble historia del Renacimiento europeo. Aquí va un intento más, esta vez en referencia a personajes y regiones poco visibles en la historiografía de la ciencia moderna: los católicos ibéricos en el mundo atlántico.

Si bien las disciplinas o los campos del conocimiento especializados son necesarios, es evidente que las "parcelas disciplinares" fragmentan y reducen los análisis a marcos de referencia limitados que dificultan el diálogo entre los académicos de distintas áreas, pues cada una de ellas opera con paradigmas, modelos y lenguajes propios. En la vida universitaria esta realidad se traduce en departamentos, programas académicos de formación y proyectos de investigación específicos. Por ello, en la Facultad de Ciencias Sociales de la Universidad de los Andes se quiere propiciar la comunicación entre los departamentos y los campos del conocimiento en apariencia distintos, con la esperanza de que dichos intercambios de ideas conduzcan a una reflexión crítica sobre las propias limitaciones para enriquecer la comprensión de la realidad social. Ambiciosos proyectos de exploración a países lejanos fueron un esfuerzo común de los imperios europeos. Como veremos, la historia natural constituiría una forma de apropiación y jugaría un papel central en las políticas de Estado; el trabajo del naturalista clasificando y nombrando objetos naturales facilitaría el control no sólo de la naturaleza, sino de otras culturas. La historia natural y los viajes de exploración constituyen un elemento central tanto para la historia de la ciencia occidental como para la historia cultural y política de Europa. Algunos historiadores que se han ocupado de la relación entre el imperialismo y la historia natural han mostrado cómo la expansión europea y la exploración científica son procesos complementarios y cómo los vínculos entre la política, el comercio y la ciencia fueron especialmente estrechos durante el siglo xviii1. Éste es un período durante el cual los europeos sintieron que su poder sobre la naturaleza se incrementaba; no sólo habían logrado conquistar buena parte del globo terrestre, sino también habían promulgado el descubrimiento de las leyes físicas que rigen el universo. Desde la llegada de los europeos a América en el siglo xv, España tuvo bajo su control el más grande imperio colonial del mundo. Durante el reinado de Carlos iii fueron implementadas algunas reformas políticas, que buscaban optimizar la explotación de las colonias estimulando la exploración científica de América. Al seguir los parámetros de la Ilustración francesa, el gobierno español basó sus políticas en la creencia de que la adquisición y aplicación de conocimientos científicos incrementaría su poder político y económico. La clave de la prosperidad económica del Imperio español parecía yacer en una explotación más eficiente de la riqueza natural de sus colonias.
