This volume contains 27 pieces, including the introduction to the catalogue for "Three American Painters," the text of his book "Morris Louis," and "Art and Objecthood." Originally published between 1962 and 1977, the essays continue to generate debate today. These are uncompromising writings, aware of their transformative power during a time of intense controversy about the nature of modernism and the aims and essence of advanced painting and sculpture. Ranging from brief reviews to extended essays, and including major critiques of Jackson Pollock, Morris Louis, Kenneth Noland, Jules Olitski, Frank Stella, and Anthony Caro, these writings establish a set of basic terms for understanding key issues in high modernism: the viability of Clement Greenberg's account of the infralogic of modernism, the status of figuration after Pollock, the centrality of the problem of shape, the nature of pictorial and sculptural abstraction, and the relationship between work and beholder.In a number of essays Fried contrasts the modernist enterprise with minimalist or literalist art, and, taking a position that remains provocative to this day, he argues that minimalism is essentially a genre of theatre, hence artistically self-defeating. Este libro forma parte de una trilogía, junto con "El lugar del espectador" y "El realismo de Courbet", que analiza cierta problemática en la evolución de la pintura francesa entre los comienzos de la reacción al Rococó, en la década de 1750, y el advenimiento del Impresionismo en 1870-80. Las décadas de 1860 y 1870 en Francia también fueron el momento y el lugar en que apareció la pintura moderna (los lienzos de Manet de la primera mitad de 1860-70 son esenciales) y, de hecho, me fijé inicialmente en el período comprendido entre "Père de famille" de Greuze y el "Déjeneur sur l''herbe" de Manet porque, además del intenso magnetismo de las obras en cuestión, pensé que la historia del arte (de la cual no me excluyo) tan solo poseía por entonces una comprensión muy rudimentaria de lo que podríamos denominar la prehistoria de la modernidad. En esta trilogía he intentado realizar un análisis de esta prehistoria, entre otras muchas cosas, revelando una dinámica esencial en el núcleo de su estructura que hasta ahora resultaba insospechada.La modernidad de Manet desborda el que suele ser un trabajo monográfico de un historiador convencional. El análisis de Fried se centra en la obra del pintor francés con una minuciosidad rigurosa, pero también en los pintores de la generación de Manet y en las críticas que se hicieron a las obras de todos estos pintores. Por otra parte, lo que no suele ser habitual en este tipo de estudios, Fried vuelve sobre un trabajo anterior -"Las fuentes de Manet"-, que incluye en el texto y lo revisa a partir de su propia reflexión y su diálogo, en ocasiones polémico, con las críticas y los vacíos que en su tiempo suscitó.

Taylor Caldwell was the author of 40+ novels that went through three periods of her development as a famous novelist. Her Dynasty of Death Series offered a view of an America governed by unscrupulous movers and shakers who used their growing fortunes to dominate even the halls of Congress. Her Mediterranean novels gave us the founding of the modern world running through Pericles, Julius Caesar, Cicero, and even Genghis Khan, including the sayings – interpreted by the author – of the famous leaders of their day. Especially her masterpiece, saved for when she was at the pinnacle of her fame: "Dear and Glorious Physician," the presentation of St. Luke as a more relatable Jesus, and an offering of the New Testament in the vision – not stated explicitly – of the heretic Marcion. All done with a background of Jesus Christ coming from an ancient persona she called "The Unknown God." Her last series of novels cast modern America as having betrayed its destiny as a supremely conservative entity destined to worship an autocratic leader. This joint biography gives a coherent story relevant to current political events based on Taylor Caldwell as a recognized forerunner of TBD-Conservatism. TC was born in 1900 and was still publishing feverishly until 1980, though she was incapacitated until her death in 1985. Her mistreated daughter Peggy became a complicated appendage to TC''s life for what remained of it, including the complex period from 1980 to 1985, while she attempted to wrest control of TC from TC''s last husband, Robert Prestie. Only near the end of TC''s sentient period did she recognize that Peggy was the only dependable person in her life.
