This rich collection of articles pays homage to many of the remarkably broad and interdisciplinary interests embodied in the work of Professor Georges-Jean Pinault. It contains not only historical and synchronic linguistic studies of numerous ancient languages---especially Tocharian, Sanskrit, Greek and Uyghur---but also editions of several recently discovered texts from Central Asia that contribute to the burgeoning fields of Buddhist and Silk Road studies. Lyuke wmer ra is a must-read for all scholars interested in the intersection of language, literature and religion of ancient and medieval western Eurasia.

After the publication of Emil Sieg's Kleine Schriften by Klaus L. Janert in 1991, many specialists of Tocharian have regretted the absence of his publications on Tocharian studies. Because these are indispensable to this day, many students of the Tocharian languages and texts have made photocopies of most, if not all, of Sieg's shorter Tocharological publications. With this book, published with the support of the Ernst-Waldschmidt-Stiftung, the editors want to set an end to this unsatisfying situation. All of Emil Sieg's shorter publications about Tocharian are included in this carefully prepared reprint volume, among others the authoritative text translations Ubersetzungen I and II, his important articles on the Karmavibha?ga and the medical texts from Paris, and his contributions to the name of the Tocharian A language. Also articles co-authored with Wilhelm Siegling or F.W.K. Muller have been included, for example the foundational contributions on the decipherment of Tocharian and the identification of the Tocharian A Maitreyasamiti-Na?aka with the Old Turkic Maitrisimit. The articles are preceded by an introduction on Sieg's life and work. An appendix containing a concordance of translations, indices and corrigenda completes the volume.

Tocharian and Indo-European Studies is the central publication for the study of two closely related languages, Tocharian A and Tocharian B. Found in many Buddhist manuscripts from central Asia, Tocharian dates back to the second half of the first millennium of the Common Era, though it was not discovered until the twentieth century. Focusing on both philological and linguistic aspects of this language, Tocharian and Indo-European Studies also looks at it in relationship to other Indo-European languages.

As one of the most central categories of the Tocharian verb, the subjunctive is of utmost importance for the reconstruction of the verbal system, the most rewarding domain of Tocharian historical grammar. Michaël Peyrot provides a thorough analysis of the formation of the subjunctive in both Tocharian languages, and establishes its meaning on the basis of a systematic investigation of a wealth of published and unpublished texts. A careful reconstruction of the Proto-Tocharian stage provides a solid base for the comparison with Indo-European and the derivation of the Tocharian subjunctive from the proto-language. With its focus on the wide variety of intricate morphological patterns, The Tocharian Subjunctive is at the same time a study of the whole Tocharian verbal system.
