We are used to distinguishing the despotic regimes of the twentieth century - Communism, Fascism, National Socialism, Maoism - very precisely according to place and time, origins and influences. This leads to the resumption of old questions: what place do modern despotisms assume in the history of the twentieth century? What is their relation to one another? Should they be captured using traditional concepts – autocracy, tyranny, despotism, dictatorship – or are new concepts required?

Here, the most important concepts - totalitarianism and political religions - are discussed and tested in terms of their usefulness. This set of volumes is as topical and relevant to current world events in the twenty first century.

Numerical simulation methods in all engineering disciplines gains more and more importance.

The successful and efficient application of such tools requires certain basic knowledge about the underlying numerical techniques.

The text gives a practice-oriented introduction in modern numerical methods as they typically are applied in mechanical, chemical, or civil engineering. Problems from heat transfer, structural mechanics, and fluid mechanics constitute a thematical focus of the text.

For the basic understanding of the topic aspects of numerical mathematics, natural sciences, computer science, and the corresponding engineering area are simultaneously important. Usually, the necessary information is distributed in different textbooks from the individual disciplines. In the present text the subject matter is presented in a comprehensive multidisciplinary way, where aspects from the different fields are treated insofar as it is necessary for general understanding. Overarching aspects and important questions related to accuracy, efficiency, and cost effectiveness are discussed.

The topics are presented in an introductory manner, such that besides basic mathematical standard knowledge in analysis and linear algebra no further prerequisites are necessary.

The book is suitable either for self-study or as an accompanying textbook for corresponding lectures. It can be useful for students of engineering disciplines as well as for computational engineers in industrial practice.

Rudolf Eucken (1846-1926) war Philosophieprofessor in Jena, der einen lebensphilosophisch angehauchten Neoidealismus vertrat und dessen Schriften im gebildeten Bürgertum breite Resonanz fanden. 1908 erhielt er den Nobelpreis für Literatur und galt seitdem als einer der renommiertesten deutschen Intellektuellen mit internationaler Ausstrahlungskraft. Eucken sammelte in den Jahren vor 1914 einen Kreis von Anhängern und Gleichgesinnten um sich, der sich als geistig-moralische - "kulturkritische" - Sammlungsbewegung verstand. Während des Ersten Weltkriegs trat Rudolf Eucken als unermüdlicher Propagandist der deutschen Sache im Inland wie im neutralen Ausland auf. Nach dem Krieg gab sich die von ihm ins Leben gerufene Bewegung mit der Gründung des "Euckenbunds" eine feste organisatorische Gestalt mit 20-25 Ortsgruppen und mehr als 1000 Mitgliedern (darunter auch Gustav Stresemann). Der Euckenbund und die vierteljährlich erscheinende Zeitschrift des Bundes ("Die Tatwelt") existierten auch nach dem Tod Rudolf Euckens 1926 weiter. Seit 1928 betrieben die Witwe des Philosophen, Irene Eucken, und ihre Tochter Ida zudem ein "Rudolf-Eucken-Haus" als internationale Begegnungsstätte der Universität Jena. Auch der Sohn Euckens, der heute viel bekanntere Nationalökonom Walter Eucken, war zeitweise in der "Eucken-Bewegung" stark engagiert. Euckenbund, Euckenhaus und "Die Tatwelt" bestanden auch nach 1933 weiter und betätigten sich, subventioniert vom Auswärtigen Amt, in der deutschen Kulturpropaganda, ohne sich aber vom Regime im Sinne der NS-Ideologie „gleichschalten" zu lassen. Im Jenaer Rudolf-Eucken-Haus fanden seit Mitte der 1930er Jahren philosophisch-wissenschaftliche Tagungen statt, an der eine ganze Reihe bekannter Geistes- und Naturwissenschaftler teilnahmen (u. a. Helmut Schelsky, Carl-Friedrich von Weizsäcker, Gotthard Günther, Pascual Jordan, Gerhard Ritter, Walter Eucken). Erst nach dem Tod Irene und Ida Euckens 1941/43 löste sich der Euckenbund auf.

Die Studie verfolgt den Werdegang Rudolf Euckens, setzt sich mit seiner Philosophie und Weltanschauung auseinander und zeigt die programmatische und organisatorische Entwicklung der „Eucken-Bewegung" und deren Aktivitäten auf. Allgemein beschäftigt sich die Arbeit mit den geistigen und politischen Befindlichkeiten des kulturkritisch gesinnten liberal-konservativen Bildungsbürgertums zwischen dem wilhelminischen Kaiserreich, der Weimarer Republik und dem Nationalsozialismus.

This book presents selected papers from the 3rd International Workshop on Computational Engineering held in Stuttgart from October 6 to 10, 2014, bringing together innovative contributions from related fields with computer science and mathematics as an important technical basis among others. The workshop discussed the state of the art and the further evolution of numerical techniques for simulation in engineering and science. We focus on current trends in numerical simulation in science and engineering, new requirements arising from rapidly increasing parallelism in computer architectures, and novel mathematical approaches. Accordingly, the chapters of the book particularly focus on parallel algorithms and performance optimization, coupled systems, and complex applications and optimization.

This book comprises the proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Computational Engineering (ICCE 2017), held in Darmstadt, Germany on September 28-29, 2017. The conference is intended to provide an interdisciplinary meeting place for researchers and practitioners working on computational methods in all disciplines of engineering, applied mathematics and computer science. The aims of the conference are to discuss the state of the art in this challenging field, exchange experiences, develop promising perspectives for future research and initiate further cooperation.

Computational Engineering is a modern and multidisciplinary science for computer-based modeling, simulation, analysis, and optimization of complex engineering applications and natural phenomena. The book contains an overview of selected approaches from numerics and optimization of Partial Differential Equations as well as uncertainty quantification techniques, typically in multiphysics environments. Where possible, application cases from engineering are integrated.

Fluid-structure interactions (FSI), that is interactions of some movable or deformable structure with an internal or surrounding fluid flow, are among the most important and, with respect to both modelling and computational issues, the most challenging multi-physics problems. The variety of FSI occurrences is abundant and ranges from tent-roofs to micropumps, from parachutes via airbags to blood flow in arteries. This volume of LNCSE contains a collection of papers presented at the International Workshop on FSI held in October 2005 in Hohenwart and organized by DFG''s Research Unit 493 "FSI: Modelling, Simulation, and Optimization". The papers address partitioned and monolithic coupling approaches, methodical issues and applications, and discuss FSI from the mathematical, informatical, and engineering point of view.

Fluid-structure interactions (FSI), i.e., the interplay of some moveable or deformable structure with an internal or surrounding fluid, are among the most widespread and most challenging coupled or multi-physics problems. Although much has been accomplished in developing good computational FSI methods and despite convincing solutions to a number of classes of problems including those presented in this book, there is a need for more comprehensive studies showing that the computational methods proposed are reliable, robust, and efficient beyond the classes of problems they have successfully been applied to.This volume of LNCSE, a sequel to vol. 53, which contained, among others, the first numerical benchmark for FSI problems and has received considerable attention since then, presents a collection of papers from the "First International Workshop on Computational Engineering - special focus FSI," held in Herrsching in October 2009 and organized by three DFG-funded consortia. The papers address all relevant aspects of FSI simulation and discuss FSI from the mathematical, informatical, and engineering perspective.

Das Prinzip Privat vs. Staat im Schwarz-Weiß-Verständnis von gut oder böse, effizient oder träge ist eine ideologische Mogelpackung. Das Buch zeigt erstmals die Realität und legt dabei den Fokus auf jenen Teil der Wirtschaft, der existenzielle Leistungen erbringt. Dafür stehen u.a. die Versorgung mit Wasser, die Entsorgung, das Recycling von Abfall oder der ÖPNV. Dazu gehört die Anerkennung der herausgehobenen Rolle der Daseinsvorsorge im Kanon wirtschaftlicher Betätigungen.

Weitere zentrale Themen des Buches sind: ÖPP zwischen Daseinsvorsorge, Infrastrukturdefiziten und Gewinnorientierung - Die falsche Reduktion auf Vertragspartnerschaften - Erfolgsfaktoren von ÖPP-Daseinsvorsorgeunternehmen - „Öffentlich-Private Daseinsvorsorge“ – ein neuer Begriff.

Die biblische Prophezeiung der Apokalypse droht real zu werden. Das ist den meisten zwar bewusst. Aber die halbherzigen Maßnahmen zur Verhinderung des Untergangs konzentrieren sich zudem „nur“ auf die drohende Klimakatastrophe. Gewaltiges Gefährdungspotenzial haben auch der ruinöse Raubbau an den dramatisch schrumpfenden irdischen Ressourcen und die Vermüllung weiter Teile der Erde. Anerkannte Experten sagen voraus, dass der Kollaps der für das Leben wesentlichen Ökosysteme wie die Weltmeere und tropischen Regenwälder kaum noch zu verhindern ist. Dieses Buch entwickelt eine ebenso radikale wie einfache Formel zur Rettung der Schöpfung. Das "Zauberwort" heißt Kreislaufwirtschaft, wozu auch die Erneuerbaren Energien gehören. Alle Stoffe, die in die Wertschöpfungskette eingehen, müssen nach dem Lebenszyklus der Produkte komplett zurückgewonnen werden. Das wäre für alle bezahlbar, und wir verfügen auch über das nötige Know-how. Was wir brauchen, ist „nur“ ein Verursacherprinzip für dieRückgewinnung und eine Marktwirtschaft, für die wir das Soziale viel umfassender und vor allem einklagbar definieren. Dies wird von den Autoren erstmals theoretisch entwickelt. Dazu präsentieren sie praktikable Vorschläge zur politischen Umsetzung.

Schlagkräftige Argumente liefert ein (fiktives) Interview der Autoren mit Papst Franziskus, Karl Marx und Friedrich Engels. Die drei antworten mit Aussagen aus ihren Schriften auf gleichlautende Fragen. Was verblüfft und beeindruckt, sind die großen Übereinstimmungen in den Bestandsaufnahmen und Lösungsvorschlägen. 

Kommunalwirtschaft ist integraler Bestandteil der Gesamtwirtschaft, deren Wertschöpfung in Deutschland zu fast 90 Prozent von privaten Produzenten geprägt ist. Das Wegbrechen globaler Lieferketten durch die Corona-Pandemie und auch im Kontext mit der russischen Aggression in der Ukraine haben gezeigt, dass in den dynamischen Kanon der Daseinsvorsorge auch die sichere Versorgung mit lebenswichtigen Pharmaka, Infektions- und Seuchenschutzmitteln gehört. 

Für die Befriedigung lebenswichtiger Bedürfnisse besteht die öffentliche Verantwortung. Daraus folgt nicht zwingend eine öffentliche  Realisierung. Der Markt allein aber kann nicht sicherstellen, dass  existentielle Leistungen immer und für jedermann verfügbar sind. Daraus ergeben sich auch neue öffentlich-private Daseinsvorsorge-Kooperationen, die in einem neuen Kapitel dargestellt werden. Begründet wird dort, dass wegen des besonderen Stellenwerts der Daseinsvorsorge die Aufgabenerledigung das Primat hat. 

Die gesellschaftspolitische Perspektive oberhalb juristischer und ordnungspolitischer Rahmensetzungen begründet die Alleinstellung auch der zweiten überarbeiteten und aktualisierten Auflage von „Kommunalwirtschaft“. 

Dass das Leben auf unserer Erde in naher Zukunft gänzlich erlischt, ist ein desaströses aber leider auch realistisches Szenario. Um genau das zu verhindern, gibt es erstmals die komplette Chronik der wichtigsten, aber nie erhörten Weckrufe zur Verhinderung des Weltuntergangs.
