What is classical culture for? Thinking with Classical Matter brings together leading experts from across the humanities, and as a whole celebrates the career of Simon Goldhill, in order to consider the place of the Ancient Greco-Roman world in the formation and formulation of different orders of knowledge. Since at least the eighteenth century, the study of Greece and Rome has played a pivotal role in both the institutional and intellectual partition of disciplines from philology to theology, aesthetics to anthropology. Such regimes of knowing, however, are also materially embedded. The knowing subject is at the same time a gendered body and the objects of knowledge are also their subject. Thinking with Classical Matter explores these questions from a wide range of theoretically informed perspectives and shows how the ancient world continues to prompt some of the most pressing questions in the humanities today.

From around 1800, particularly in Germany, Greek tragedy has been privileged in popular and scholarly discourse for its relation to apparently timeless metaphysical, existential, ethical, aesthetic, and psychological questions. As a major concern of modern philosophy, it has fascinated thinkers including Hegel, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Freud, and Heidegger. Such theories have arguably had a more profound influence on modern understanding of the genre than works of classical scholarship or theatrical performances. Tragedy and the Idea of Modernity considers this tradition of philosophy in relation to the ancient Greek works themselves, and mediates between the concerns of classicists and those of intellectual historians and philosophers. The volume is organized into sections treating issues of poetics, politics and culture, and canonicity, and contributions by an interdisciplinary range of scholars consider themes of catharsis, the sublime, politics, and reconciliation, spanning 2,500 years of literature and philosophy. Although firmly anchored in the classical tradition, the volume suggests that the tradition of philosophical thought concerning tragedy has a major place in understandings both of ancient tragedy and of modernity itself.

Despite its Latin etymology, “revolution” in its modern understanding arguably did not exist in antiquity, and revolution as we know it today is considered by many theorists to be a term born in modernity. While they certainly had times of momentous political upheaval, the Greeks and Romans tended to understand such events as part of a narrative of political continuity rather than novelty or rupture. Nevertheless, modern revolutions have repeatedly appropriated tropes of classical discourse, such as freedom, tyranny, tragedy, and fraternity. With this book, Miriam Leonard offers a conceptual history of revolution, unraveling modernity’s yearning for the new and questioning why ancient concepts continue to play such an important role in political uprisings.
