Questions of secularity and modernity have become globalized, but most studies still focus on the West. This volume breaks new ground by comparatively exploring developments in five areas of the world, some of which were hitherto situated at the margins of international scholarly discussions: Africa, the Arab World, East Asia, South Asia, and Central and Eastern Europe.In theoretical terms, the book examines three key dimensions of modern secularity: historical pathways, cultural meanings, and global entanglements of secular formations. This volume maps the international academic debate on secularity. It places seminal contributions from within ‘Western’ academia alongside less well-known texts from various parts of the world; in several cases this is the first time that they have been translated into English. The volume demonstrates that the academic debate on secularity was and is a global debate, with contributions from many regions. The collected texts relate to each other either directly or indirectly by referring to similar arguments – whether reinforcing or criticising them – and thus create a discourse. When speaking of global secularity, we therefore do not insinuate a uniform ‘world secularity’ resulting from the alleged global diffusion of ‘Western’ norms, ideas and concepts. It is rather a web of relations that is constituted via various different references. These references are not evenly distributed: the development in ‘the West’ is often the point of reference to which positions from other regions relate, to which they connect, or from which they distance themselves. But the references are not completely unidirectional: We also present texts from Europe that underline the multidirectionality of the process, even early on. Thereby, the volume offers the reader the material with which to trace these global exchanges and references.

This volume aims to revitalize the exchange between sociological differentiation theory and the sociology of religion, which previously held center stage among the sociological classics. It brings together contributions from different disciplines, as well as various forms of regional and historical expertise, which are indispensable in forming a globally oriented sociological perspective today. Secularization is understood as a process of boundary demarcation, that is, as the enactment of semantic, practical, and institutional distinctions between religion and other spheres of activity and knowledge. These distinctions may emerge from within the religious field itself, or may be absorbed into the field having originally emerged elsewhere. They may even be directly imposed upon religion by external forces. The volume is therefore based on the premise that societal differentiation – and secularity as a specific expression of it – is a widespread structural feature that nonetheless takes on various forms, depending on its historical and cultural context. In order to make this diversity visible, the volume adopts a global comparative perspective, and examines historical distinctions and differentiations in the West and beyond. By examining different forms and modes of secularity in statu nascendi, the volume contributes to developing a better understanding of the diversity of secularities, even of those found in the present day, in terms of their historicity and their specific path dependencies. With this shift in perspective, this special volume initiates a global and historical turn in the theory of differentiation, as well as in the study of secularity.

Ich möchte die Publikation dieser Arbeit, die im Sommer 1991 am Fachbereich Gesellschaftswissenschaften und Philosophie der Philipps­ Universität Marburg als Dissertation angenommen wurde, zum Anlaß nehmen, einigen Personen und Institutionen zu danken, die mich in den letzten Jahren unterstützt und gefördert, mit mir diskutiert und meine Manuskripte gelesen, mich auf Literatur aufmerksam gemacht, mich in Motivationstiefs ermutigt und bei allzu großen Höhenflügen auf den Bo­ den der Tatsachen zurückgeholt haben. Zu allererst danke ich meiner Mutter, ohne deren beharrliche Unter­ stützung ich den Weg in die Wissenschaft sicherlich gar nicht erst ins Auge gefaßt hätte. Sie möge diese Arbeit als verspätetes Dankeschön für die Hilfe beim Latein-Lernen begreifen. Mein besonderer Dank gilt Hanns-Georg Brose, in dessen Projekt "Die Vermittlung sozialer und biographischer Zeitstrukturen" ich nach Studienabschluß "in die Lehre" gehen konnte. Neben der unschätzbaren Förderung durch ihn war er für mich besonders als Gesprächspartner wichtig, dem ich wesentliche Anregungen verdanke. Dem Entstehungszu­ sammenhang des genannten Projektes, auf dessen Ergebnissen ich auf­ bauen konnte, bleibt diese Arbeit verpflichtet. Meine Projektkollegen Michael Corsten, Gerhard Frank, Wemer Meyer und vor allem Matthias Schulze-Böing ermöglichten einen lang­ jährigen verbindlichen Diskussionszusammenhang, von dem ich sehr pro­ fitiert habe. Matthias Schulze-Böing verdanke ich auch wichtige theoreti­ sche Impulse, Hilfestellungen bei der französischsprachigen Literatur und nicht zuletzt eine geduldige Einführung in die EDV.

Die meisten der in diesem Band versammelten Texte gehen auf eine Ringvor- sung zurück, die im Sommersemester 2008 unter dem Titel „Doing Cultural Sociology“ an der Universität Leipzig stattgefunden hat, ergänzt durch mehrere 1 Beiträge, die das thematische Spektrum abrunden. Aufgabenstellung an die Referenten, wie nun auch an die Autoren des Bandes war es, sich selber in ihrer Art Kultursoziologie zu betreiben zu präsentieren: deutlich zu machen, von wo sie ihren Ausgangspunkt nehmen, wie sie sich paradigmatisch in der Soziologie verorten, welche Gegenstände oder Themen für sie vorrangig sind, mit welchen Methoden sie sich diesen nähern und was dabei jeweils als „Kultur“ in den Blick kommt. 2 Der vorliegende Band zeigt, dass aus dieser gemeinsamen Aufgabenst- lung keine homogenen, parallel aufgebauten Einführungstexte entstanden sind. Insbesondere die theoretisch ausgerichteten Aufsätze – seien sie an den Klas- kern oder an neueren Ansätzen orientiert oder reflexiv auf die wissenschaftliche oder alltägliche Rede von Kultur bezogen – fügen sich dieser Logik schwerer als die empirisch orientierten Zugänge. Bei genauerer Betrachtung allerdings geben alle Texte Antwort auf die Grundfrage nach der Art und Weise, Kultur- ziologie zu betreiben und geben damit einen Eindruck von der Vielfalt der e- stierenden Zugänge und der Art und Weise, Kultursoziologie zu interpretieren. Damit entsprechen sie einem Grundanliegen der Veranstaltung wie auch dieses Buches: die Soziologie in der Vielfalt ihrer Ansätze zu zeigen.
