Sustained political and socioeconomic crises can potentially deprive generations of young people and adults of their economic and employment prospects, stability, mental health and freedom. The Education of Arabic Speaking Refugee Children and Young Adults provides a comprehensive overview of the situation of Arabic-speaking refugee children and their psychosocial, schooling and employment experiences in three case countries: Australia, Italy and Indonesia. The book considers what education arrangements were put in place for refugee children, how were they supported in schools for physical and psychological needs, how the school environment hindered or assisted their learning experience and the way in which these students were affected by the global COVID-19 pandemic. The authors provide recommendations for educational practices and employment pathways as informed by the refugee children and young adults themselves, teachers, parents, schools and state officials. This book will be of great interest to academics, researchers and post-graduate students in the fields of comparative education and refugee and migrant education. It will also be beneficial for educators, teachers and policy-makers.

This book provides insights into the education and schooling of Syrian and Palestinian Syrian children inside and outside Lebanese refugee camps. It describes what is happening to these children and young refugees in terms of their schooling. Investigating the perspectives of children, their parents, teachers, community leaders, and state politicians and bureaucrats on the schooling provisions and educational opportunities for refugee children in Lebanon, this book reveals the condition of social disadvantage that Syrian and Syrian Palestinian refugee children and their families are experiencing in Lebanon. Maadad and Rodwell propose the idea of the pedagogy of the displaced that recognises socio-economic disadvantage and refocuses the nature of the learner and their learning and the philosophy of teaching. A collaborative action of society – the refugee families, the schools, the communities, the host state, the international aid agencies and the rest of the world – in addressing the barriers to education and schooling of the refugee children must break ground and be sustained.
Lebanon’s Educational Odyssey From the Arab Spring to the Digital Era
Resilience in Chaos

This book critically analyses the state of Lebanon's education system in the aftermath of the 2011 Arab Spring uprisings, which, while not leading to the same level of upheaval as in other countries, nonetheless had profound implications for the region. It investigates three major events over the following decade – the influx of Syrian refugees, the Covid-19 Pandemic, and the Port of Bierut explosion – that have exacerbated existing political and sectarian divisions in Lebanon, resulting in a destabilized environment and a leadership vacuum that have significantly impacted Lebanon's educational landscape. At the same time, civil society movements were calling for urgent political and social reforms. The book uses a humanistic sociological approach which focuses on understanding events from the perspective of those who lived through them, in this case, the families, the children and the young people affected by the decline in educational provision in Lebanon. The book's conclusions are aimed not only at understanding the crisis, but also at proposing actionable recommendations, emphasizing the role of non-profit organizations in supporting the educational infrastructure. This book addresses universal themes such as the integration of refugees into national education systems, the impacts of political instability on access for all children to education, and the role of grassroots movements in advocating for systemic change. Framing Lebanon's situation within a broader international context offers valuable lessons for policymakers and educators facing similar challenges worldwide. Most importantly, it aims to highlight the urgent need for investment in education as a means of rebuilding Lebanon and fostering a more cohesive society.
