This book makes available for the first time in English a substantial part of Otto Neurath's economic writings. The essays and small monographs translated here extend from his student years to his last ever finished piece. They chart not only Neurath's varied interests in the economic history of antiquity, in war economics and schemes for the socialisation of peacetime economies, in the theory of welfare measures and social indicators and in issues of the theory of collective choice, but also show his philosophical interests emerging in his contributions to seminal debates of the German Social Policy Association. This volume shows that Neurath's important contributions to the socialist calculation debate are but one aspect of a many-sided and original oeuvre. The translations are preceded by an introductory essay by one of the editors which contextualises the selections by locating them in the various debates of the time that provided their original setting. This book is of interest to economists, philosophers of social science and of economics as well as to historians of philosophy of science and of analytic philosophy.

Otto Neurath’s famous Modern Man in the Making, first published by Alfred A. Knopf in 1939, captures and describes the state of the world in the 1930s by using text and figurative illustrations. From 1925 onwards, Neurath and his team had worked on a new visual language termed “Isotype” (International System of Typographic Picture Education). At a time that saw the rise of new mass media making hitherto unthinkable amounts of information available, Neurath felt the need for a systematic visualization explaining facts, statistic data and comparative numbers in simple ways. The book can be seen as one of the most influential predecessors of today’s ever-present infographics. Its mission was to analyze the “fundamental trends in the social, political and economic life of humanity.” The topics covered in the book include diverse social issues of the time such as mortality, health, employment, trade, education, mobility, migration and demographics.Modern Man in the Making shows Neurath’s democratic endeavor to make knowledge intelligible and available to all. It is a reminder of graphic art’s ability to inform and create context instead of presenting aesthetic qualities only. The book has inspired generations of designers and led to sometimes peculiar imitations and further developments. This pivotal historical picture-text book is made available again as a reprint of the original publication in the series XX The Century of Print – at a time in which new media force designers ever more so to break down complex data into easily comprehensible depictions.

Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts schien es ausgemacht: Der kapitalistische Markt hatte über die Planwirtschaft gesiegt. Versuche, mittels rationaler Planung die kapitalistischen Länder "einzuholen und zu überholen", waren bereits zwei Jahrzehnte zuvor gescheitert. Planwirtschaftliche Modelle schienen für immer abgeschrieben, hatten sie sich doch in der Praxis als ökonomisch undurchführbar und politisch repressiv erwiesen. Allerdings ist eine Beschäftigung mit der Idee einer geplanten sozialistischen Wirtschaft und ihren theoretischen Grundlagen heute aktueller denn je. Denn das Hohelied des freien Marktes verhallt nun schneller, als von den Nutznießern des Kapitalismus befürchtet. Die Wirtschaftskrise 2008, erzwungene Migrations- und Fluchtbewegungen, zunehmende soziale Verwerfungen und nicht zuletzt die ökologische Katastrophe und ihre dramatischen Auswirkungen auf die Gesundheit des Menschen haben zu einer Krise in Permanenz geführt, der mit marktwirtschaftlichen Methoden offensichtlich nicht beizukommen ist. Ob bei den CO2-Budgets, der Impfstoffproduktion oder der Bereitstellung von Atemwegsmasken: Immer öfter war zuletzt, nicht nur im angelsächsischen Raum, von Sozialismus, Planwirtschaft oder zumindest planning die Rede.Für die Herausgeber Philip Broistedt und Christian Hofmann ist Planwirtschaft weder ein selbsterklärender noch ein originär linker Begriff. In ihrer Textsammlung dokumentieren sie zentrale Debatten darüber, wie eine geplante Wirtschaft an die Stelle der anarchischen Produktion auf Basis des Marktes treten könnte. Auch wenn Marx und Engels keine Theorie einer Planwirtschaft verfassten, so ist doch die Marxsche Kapitalismusanalyse, die auf die Aufhebung der Wertform der Produkte hinausläuft, der Ausgangspunkt für die Linke um eine planmäßig bewusste, gesellschaftliche Produktion. Im ersten Kapitel des Buches geht es deshalb um die Arbeitszeitrechnung als Dreh- und Angelpunkt für einen gesellschaftlichen Produktionsplan der assoziierten ProduzentInnen, die Marx im Kapital als "Verein freier Menschen" titulierte.Die Kapitel zwei und drei beinhalten Texte, die zentral für die gescheiterten Planwirtschaftsmodelle des 20. Jahrhunderts stehen. Die KommunistInnen in Russland und später auch in China besaßen in der ersten Phase ihrer revolutionären Umwälzung die Hoffnung, mit kriegswirtschaftlicher Naturalplanung im Sturmlauf zum Kommunismus zu gelangen. Geprägt und inspiriert durch die Kriegswirtschaft sollte alles administrativ geregelt werden: die Arbeit durch revolutionäre Arbeitsdisziplin, wenn nicht Arbeitsarmeen, die Planung und Bezahlung in Naturalien. Im dritten Kapitel geht es um die "planmäßige Anwendung des Wertgesetzes", das nach dem schnellen Scheitern der Naturalwirtschaft zentral für den Staatssozialismus wurde. Ein starker, autoritärer Staat sollte das Wertgesetz ausnutzen, um zunächst die Grundlagen für eine kommunistische Produktion zu legen. Eine Kostenrechnung, d. h. eine Ökonomie mit "Ware-Geld-Beziehungen", war letztlich trotz Wirtschaftsplanung als unverzichtbarer Bestandteil des Staatssozialismus allgemein anerkannt.Im abschließenden Kapitel finden sich neuere Diskussionsbeiträge, die vom Scheitern der starren Planwirtschaftsversuche im 20. Jahrhundert ausgehen. Dabei steht einmal mehr die zentrale Frage im Raum, warum der Staatssozialismus keine bessere ökologische Bilanz hatte als sein konkurrierendes Pendant; zum zweiten geht es um das eklatante Demokratiedefizit bisheriger Planungsmodelle und um die Frage, welche Vorteile die neuen, digitalen Produktivkräfte für künftiges gesellschaftliches Planen bieten würden.
