Bicycles as a means of transport in cities are playing an ever more important role. The reasons are: reduction of motorcar traffic, sustainable traffic planning, reduction of noise and exhaust emissions, enhancement of the value of public space, healthier form of transport, savings potential in national health services and infrastructure expenditure. The book illustrates urban design ideas and architectural projects which go far beyond purely redesigning road layouts; its eight essays focus on the trend in urban design, landscape design, and traffic planning, it introduces nine exemplary bicycle traffic concepts in various cities (Barcelona, Copenhagen, New York, and Oslo amongst others), and presents 28 forward-looking individual bicycle infrastructure projects.

The energy requirements of buildings are enormous, resulting in a significant proportion of global CO2 emissions – both in the construction phase and during the building’s use and eventual demolition. In an era of energy transition and extreme weather phenomena, the question “How do we build in a time of climate change?” becomes all the more urgent. This volume presents international best-practice projects characterized by sustainable design and provide forward-looking answers. A sustainably built wood and concrete supermarket that includes a roof farm; a kindergarten constructed from locally sourced recycled materials; the renovation of an office building so that it can dispense with its air conditioning and ventilation systems: in addition to the choice of materials and innovative operating concepts, the possibilities for reducing emissions and energy requirements lie above all in thinking about the entire life cycle of a building, including refurbishing rather than new construction when possible. This volume brings together real-world examples and offers starting points for how to approach construction today and in the future.

Text in English & German. Johannes Peter Hölzinger studied architecture at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main from 1954 to 1957. After a residency fellowship at the Deutsche Akademie Villa Massimo in Rome he founded a "planning association for new forms of the environment" in 1965 together with Zero artist Hermann Goepfert, who has since died. One of the most successful results of his work with Goepfert was a new design for the Schloßpark in Karlsruhe on the occasion of the Bundesgartenschau in 1967, which won a major German architectural prize, the Hugo-Häring-Preis. From 1991 until his retirement in 2002 Hölzinger directed the art and public-space course at the Akademie der bildenden Künste in Nuremberg. Individualistic and oppositional in comparison to other post-World War II architectural achievements, the design of Hölzinger's buildings is very distinctive. The playful elements of Postmodernism are as alien to his work as the functionalism of New Building. Because of his association with Hermann Goepfert, Hölzinger is much more closely connected with the art scene of his time. The integration of art and architecture is a unique feature of his buildings. If we try to assign a category to this "object architecture" (a term he coined himself), we will find less overlap with architecture than with fine art. From the very beginning Hölzinger saw architecture as an artistic discipline. Light kinetics offered him important new perspectives. Lighting design and the resulting colour changes of white walls play a vital role in his work.

Bilingual edition (English/German) / Zweisprachige Ausgabe (deutsch/englisch) While most high-rise buildings continue to be built in China and the USA, Australia and especially Singapore have recently emerged as hotspots for high-rise architecture. Furthermore, the trend toward mixed-use skyscrapers, which have repeatedly been among the finalists of The International High-Rise Award since 2014, continues unabated. Former specific features such as extensive greening or the construction of high-rise clusters have long since become standard. Due to the shortage of suitable building sites and growing environmental awareness, existing buildings are increasingly coming into focus in high-rise construction. Best High-Rises 2024/25 presents thirty-two of the most exciting recently completed high-rise projects that combine sustainability, external form, internal spatial qualities, and social aspects into exemplary designs that point the way to the future. Each of these projects is comprehensively presented with photos and plans. The International High-Rise Award is presented every two years. Previous winners include 3XN (2022), OMA (2020), Benjamín Romano (2018), BIG (2016), Stefano Boeri (2014), Ingenhoven Architects (2012), WOHA (2010), and Foster + Partners (2008). 20 years of The International High-Rise Award32 of the most interesting recent high-rise projects worldwide in texts, plans, and photosNew focus: conversion of existing high-rises

The rediscovery of the city that has been evident recently has by no means superseded the human desire for nature. On the contrary, the goal has been finding urban solutions that do justice to these growing needs and do so in ways that meet the requirements for design, ecology, sociology, and economy. This publication addresses the subject of designing inner-city spaces. It documents twenty recently realized examples in Europe, most of which feature greenery, designed by international landscape architects such as Gustafson Porter, Field Operations, Michel Desvigne, Gross.Max, Latz + Partner, and West 8. The projects, built between 2 4 and 2 , range from private urban gardens by way of squares, streets, and promenades to large-scale projects such as the revitalization of riverside areas or master plans for the green spaces of entire cities. Urban greenery is an important contribution to ecological urban development. The projects documented offer examples of how this can succeed using the most modern materials and technologies.

"How did UK activists outfox 700 police? Why was Hong Kong traffic stopped by ‘mini Stonehenges’? And could an octagonal treehouse and a crow’s nest really have saved a German forest? Our writer enjoys a 200-year history of resistance architecture." — The GuardianProtest movements shape public space not only through their messages, but in many cases also through their - mostly temporary - buildings. Frankfurt’s Deutsches Architekturmuseum DAM and Vienna’s MAK - Museum of Applied Arts are exploring this thesis in a joint exhibition project. The exhibition and the book coinciding with it explore the topic based on examples spanning from 1830 to 2022.Protest Architecture is the first-ever international survey of the architecture of protest and presents it in all its manifold forms and, in some cases, ambivalence. It is conceived as an encyclopedia with around 170 entries, supplemented by 14 more expansive case studies. A preceding chronology portrays some 80 protest movements and their architectural manifestations through concise texts and one image each, including examples from all over the world, such as the 1830 July Revolution in Paris, the 1848 March Revolution in Berlin, the 1911 Sugar Workers Strike in Queensland (Australia), the 1936-37 General Motors Sit-down Strike in Flint, MI (USA), the 1969-98 Troubles in Northern Ireland, Freetown Christiania in Copenhagen since 1971, the 1986 People Power Revolution in Manila, the 1999 WTO Protests in Seattle, WA (USA), the 2011 Arab Spring revolutions on Cairo’s Tahrir Square and Manama’s Pearl Roundabout, the 2013–14 Euromaidan uprisings in Kyiv, the 2015–16 #FeesMustFall student protests in Pretoria, the 2019 Acampamento Terra Livre in Brasilia, the 2020–21 Indian Farmers Protests, and the 2022 Freedom Convoy in Ottawa.Text in English and German.
