The Lexicon of Greek Personal names, established as a major research project of the British Academy and now funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Board and by Greek Foundations, offers scholars a comprehensive listing of all named individuals from the ancient Greek-speaking world. The information needed has been compiled from all written sources, literary, epigraphical, papyrological and numismatic, within a chronological range from the eighth century BC to approximately 600 AD; the geographical limits match the use of Greek language in antiquity, from Asia Minor to the Western Mediterranean, the Black Sea to North Africa. Many scholars have contributed to the achievement of this ambitious research programmeWith the present volume, the project moves into Northern Greece and on to the west and north shores of the Black Sea, extending from the Greek colonial zone into the Balkan hinterland as far as the Danube.The Greek world was highly differentiated in many ways, from the broadest divisions into Aeolic, Ionic and Doric speaking communities, to individual cities with their different social, religious and political patterns. Names follow, and play a part in measuring, these differences, which transcended physical boundaries.
