By the end of the twenty-first century, computer-based modelling and simulation will be integral to the way clinical decisions are taken. Drugs will be selected on the basis of an individual patient's "digital profile", while clinical treatments will be tailor-made for the individual in question. For this to come to pass, however, we must prepare for a future where we can simulate our own bodies with precision, drawing upon remarkable advances in information technology, computer, mathematical, physical and engineering science, data management, and high performance computing. Computational Biomedicine lays the foundations for a new approach to the subject - one that unifies the different strands of a broad-ranging subject, and demonstrates how computational biomedicine is a powerful tool with the potential to revolutionise our understanding of the human body, and the therapeutic strategies available to maintain and protect it.Written by a team of world-leading experts in the field, it explores the modelling of physiological systems at different scales - cells, tissues, organs - before considering the issues around biomedical computing, and data collection and analysis. It emphasises how a theoretical understanding of computational biomedicine translates into practice, with illustrative examples and case studies used throughout.Computational Biomedicine is the perfect introduction to the subject for anyone new to the field, from student to researcher. Online Resource CentreThe Online Resource Centre to accompany Computational Biomedicine features figures from the book in electronic format, for download by registered adopters.

Nobody actually knows what AI is.Oh, people will tell you they do. They'll talk about neural networks and emergent behaviour, and you'll nod politely while quietly wondering whether you left the oven on.Here's the secret: most of those people don't really know either.Understanding AI: The Word Calculator and How to Use It Well is the book that explains — in plain English, without jargon, without hype — what AI actually is, how it works, where it goes wrong, and how to use it well. It is written by Peter Hunter, who has spent decades keeping complex computer systems running, and who learned AI the only honest way: by using it for real things. You will not find any predictions. You will not be sold anything. You will not be made to feel stupid. What you will find is a clear, dry-witted guide that treats you as an intelligent adult who simply hasn't had a good explanation yet.By the end, you will know what you are doing.

In recent years there has been a growth in interest in studying the heart from the perspective of the physical sciences: mechanics, fluid flow, electromechanics. This volume is the result of a workshop held in July 1989 at the Institute for Nonlinear Sciences at the University of California at San Diego that brought together scientists and clinicians with graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who shared an interest in the heart. The chapters were prepared by the invited speakers as didactic reviews of their subjects but also include the structure, mechanical properties, and function of the heart and the myocardium, electrical activity of the heart and myocardium, and mathematical models of heart function.

What is real? What is the foundation of right and wrong? How can we know? There are many ways to answer these questions--Western religious views in which humanity is part of God''s creation, Eastern religious views in which delusion traps humanity in a cycle of reincarnation, and secular views in which humanity evolved as part of the material universe driven by nothing other than the impersonal forces of evolution. Each of these views paints unique and comprehensive pictures of the world to convey their vision. These pictures are as different from each other as if they were of three different lands separated from each other by patrolled borders. The border between Eastern and Western religions is guarded by arguments over the nature of the divine and rational versus experiential approaches to salvation. Both of these territories are separated from the land of scientific atheists who deny the existence of any supernatural reality and see the scientific method as the sole valid arbiter of truth. This book presents all three views for non-specialists, enabling readers to enter them imaginatively. It then compares these approaches on different contemporary topics. This book is for anyone who wonders why people believe what they do.
