The penthouse is the ultimate expression of contemporary urban living. As much a state of mind as a physical space, the word ‘penthouse’ evokes excitement, drama, exclusivity and escape. First emerging a century ago with the dawn of the skyscraper, the penthouse has become the aspirational talisman of the modern global city.

Penthouse brings you inside incredible apartments such as the $235 million One Hyde Park Penthouse in London, New York’s Central Park Tower – the world’s highest residential building – and the supertall Steinway Tower. It also surveys a different side to penthouse style, from coastal residences in Hong Kong, Cape Town and the Gulf to mid-century penthouses in the Hollywood Hills.

A stunning photographic journey in a luxury, fabric-bound edition, Penthouse is an exploration of style at the extremities, told through interviews with the most talented designers working today – designers who are creating spaces that define and defy the frontiers of urban living.

The first new biography for a generation of one of the great figures of English literaturePoet, essayist, biographer, lexicographer, critic, conversationalist and wit, Dr Johnson is one of the great figures of English literature, perhaps the most quoted English writer after Shakespeare. Our view of Johnson has been overwhelmingly shaped by James Boswell''s Life of Samuel Johnson, published in 1791, the most famous biography in the English language. But invaluable as Boswell is as a source, he should not be the last word. This new biography illuminates the Johnson that Boswell never knew: the awkward youth, the unsuccessful schoolmaster, the eccentric marriage, his early years in London in the 1740s scratching a living, the epic struggle to produce the Dictionary. Very much the outsider, rather than the supremely confident dispenser of robust common sense.Using material unknown to previous biographers, Peter Martin describes the psychological knife-edge on which Johnson felt he lived, caused by his severe melancholia and his physical diseases. He explores Johnson''s role in the publishing and printing world of the time and he reveals how important women were to Johnson throughout his life. The Samuel Johnson that emerges from this enthralling biography is still the foremost figure of his age but a more rebellious, unpredictable and sympathetic figure than the one that Boswell so memorably portrayed.

At the present moment, in the Church and in society, there is no more critical issue for us to address than the truth about marriage. Our world has presented us with an atmosphere in which the integrity of marriage has been under attack for decades.

In the midst of pressure from a secularized culture there comes a bright light of joyful hope from Theresa and Peter Martin: The Rule offers us the first English translation of Cardinal Wojtyla''s Rule for a joy-filled marriage of divine love.

Theresa & Peter Martin have brilliantly taken a concise, six-point "Rule for Married Couple Groups" written by St. John Paul II and expounded upon it, using St. John Paul II''s own words, to allow the reader to fully understand its meaning. The Rule gives you St. John Paul II''s key to deepening spouses'' conjugal spirituality and finding lasting Joy!

What is this Rule?

Why do we need it?

Could it really be the key we have been searching for-to help us get beyond the struggle and live a life of enduring joy in Christ?

JPII thinks so.

Theresa and Peter Martin guide the reader with their theological expertise as well as their lived experience. The Rule''s main purpose is to live the truth of Humanae Vitae, which will build each couple''s conjugal spirituality. Humanae Vitae is a pivotal point in cultural morality stating that God, and not man, is the author of life and human sexuality. Imagine the wellspring of renewal if more couples would truly live according to this very simple reality!

The Rule helps good couples become great through grace and would be the perfect addition to a marriage catechumenate! The Wojtyła Community & Institute (WCI) is a nonprofit organization whose sole purpose is to further the mission of spreading St. John Paul II''s Rule and helping spouses live it. (wojtylaci.com)

A compelling history of the national conflicts that resulted from efforts to produce the first definitive American dictionary of English In The Dictionary Wars, Peter Martin recounts the patriotic fervor in the early American republic to produce a definitive national dictionary that would rival Samuel Johnson’s 1755 Dictionary of the English Language. But what began as a cultural war of independence from Britain devolved into a battle among lexicographers, authors, scholars, and publishers, all vying for dictionary supremacy and shattering forever the dream of a unified American language. The overwhelming questions in the dictionary wars involved which and whose English was truly American and whether a dictionary of English should attempt to be American at all, independent from Britain. Martin tells the human story of the intense rivalry between America’s first lexicographers, Noah Webster and Joseph Emerson Worcester, who fought over who could best represent the soul and identity of American culture. Webster believed an American dictionary, like the American language, ought to be informed by the nation’s republican principles, but Worcester thought that such language reforms were reckless and went too far. Their conflict continued beyond Webster’s death, when the ambitious Merriam brothers acquired publishing rights to Webster’s American Dictionary and launched their own language wars. From the beginning of the nineteenth century to the end of the Civil War, the dictionary wars also engaged America’s colleges, libraries, newspapers, religious groups, and state legislatures at a pivotal historical moment that coincided with rising literacy and the print revolution.Delving into the personal stories and national debates that arose from the conflicts surrounding America’s first dictionaries, The Dictionary Wars examines the linguistic struggles that underpinned the founding and growth of a nation.
