The central questions of this book are how technologies decline, how societies deal with technologies in decline, and how governance may be explicitly oriented towards parting with ‘undesirable’ technology.Surprisingly, these questions are fairly novel. Thus far, the dominant interest in historical, economic, sociological and political studies of technology has been to understand how novelty emerges, how innovation can open up new opportunities and how such processes may be supported. This innovation bias reflects how in the last centuries modern societies have embraced technology as a vehicle of progress. It is timely, however, to broaden the social study of technology and society: next to considering the rise of technologies, their fall should be addressed, too. Dealing with technologies in decline is an important challenge or our times, as socio-technical systems are increasingly part of the problems of climate change, biodiversity loss, social inequalities and geo-political tensions. This volume presents empirical studies of technologies in decline, as well as conceptual clarifications and theoretical deepening. war, die gegenwärtige Bedeutung der Phänomenologie für die soziologische Forschung und Theoriebildung in einem möglichst breiten, kritische Positionen deshalb nicht ausschließenden Zugang zu sondieren. Diese Pluralität ist intendiert und wird von uns vehement verteidigt. Sie erlaubt keiner der hier vertretenen, dezidiert diversen Richtungen die Erhebung eines Alleinv- tretungsanspruchs. Jenseits der Pluralität der hier niedergelegten und nachfolgend kurz vor- stellten Perspektiven, Problemfelder und Untersuchungsbereiche eint die Autoren jedoch eine gemeinsame Auffassung und ein übergreifendes Anliegen. Sie teilen nahezu ausschließlich die Einsicht in die konstitutive Bedeutung der Subjektivität für die Sozialwissenschaften, und sie stimmen darin überein, dass sozialwissenschaftliche Untersuchungen, Begriffsbildungen und Theoriekonstruktionen um eine Auseinandersetzung mit der phänomenlogischen Perspektive und Methodenhaltung nicht umhinkommen – gleich auf welche Art und Weise sie letztlich auf sie Bezug nehmen und sich ihrer bedienen. Gemeinsam ist ihnen darüber hinaus das Anliegen, die je vertretene Haltung und die Bewertung des Ertrags der phänomenologischen Perspektive für die Beschreibung sozialer Phänomene sowie für die Analyse sozialer Ordnung durch theo- tische, methodologische und empirische Arbeiten zu begründen und abzusichern. In dieser engen Verknüpfung von Forschung und Theoriearbeit äußert sich eine der bedeutsamsten Akzentsetzungen dieses Bandes, der damit einer immer drohenden Gefahr des Auseinandert- tens dieser beiden Seiten soziologischen Arbeitens deutlich entgegenwirken will. Ebenso klar dürfte somit sein, dass dem hier verfolgten Unternehmen die Spezialisierung auf eine rein konservatorische Werkexegese genauso fern liegtwie die traditionsvergessene Neuerfindung längstbekannter Zusammenhänge oder die Beförderung eines theorieblinden Empirismus.
