R. Barton Palmer argues that the Coen oeuvre forms a central element in what might be called postmodernist filmmaking. Mixing high and low cultural sources and blurring genres like noir and comedy, the use of pastiche and anti-realist elements in films such as The Hudsucker Proxy and Barton Fink clearly fit the postmodernist paradigm. Palmer argues that for a full understanding of the Coen brothers'' unique position within film culture, it is important to see how they have developed a new type of text within general postmodernist practice that Palmer terms commercial/independent. Analyzing their substantial body of work from this "generic" framework is the central focus of this book.

Therise of an influential new family of poetry in the Middle Ages
Thisbook is the first collective examination of late medieval intimate first-personnarratives that blur the lines between author, narrator, and protagonist andusually feature personification allegory and courtly love tropes, creating anexperimental new family of poetry. In this volume, contributors analyze why theallegorical first-person romance embedded itself in the vernacular literatureof Western Europe and remained popular for more than two centuries.
Theeditors identify and discuss three predominant forms within this family: debatepoetry, dream allegories, and autobiographies. Contributors offer textualanalyses of key works from late medieval German, French, Italian, and Iberianliterature, with discussion of developments in England, as well.
Allegory and the Poetic Self offers asophisticated, theoretically current discussion of relevant literature. This explorationof medieval “I” narratives offers insights not just into the premodern periodbut also into Western literature’s subsequent traditions of self-analysis andidentity crafting through storytelling.

Widely regarded as a turning point in American independent cinema, Steven Soderbergh''s sex, lies, and videotape (1989) launched the career of its twenty-six-year-old director, whose debut film was nominated for an Academy Award and went on to win the Cannes Film Festival''s top award, the Palme d''Or. The Philosophy of Steven Soderbergh breaks new ground by investigating salient philosophical themes through the unique story lines and innovative approaches to filmmaking that distinguish this celebrated artist.
Editors R. Barton Palmer and Steven M. Sanders have brought together leading scholars in philosophy and film studies for the first systematic analysis of Soderbergh''s entire body of work, offering the first in-depth exploration of the philosophical ideas that form the basis of the work of one of the most commercially successful and consistently inventive filmmakers of our time.
