An island with no native population, Mauritius was permanently peopled through colonisation as from the early eighteenth century. European colonists, African and Malagasy slaves, Indian contract labourers, Chinese and Indian petty merchants settled on the island and progressively created a society shaped by the diversity of its population and also by the unequal access to limited resources and wealth. Contemporary Mauritius tends to be sensitive to its multiple origins and identity boundaries, as well as to potential conflicts and the importance of interaction and communication in a multicultural society. Common denominators of culture and language, as well as dynamic processes of cultural and linguistic hybridity, that could form the basis of an all-Mauritian culture thus become crucial. This is shown in the studies presented in this volume which are given a wider perspective through comparison with other post-colonial societies such as the French Caribbean.

Das Korpus will zunächst der wachsenden Zahl von Studenten und Forschern, die sich den Kreolsprachen auf französischer lexikalischer Basis zuwenden, eine verläßliche sprachliche Datengrundlage an die Hand geben. Die in dieser Arbeit enthaltenen genauen Transkriptionen/Trans-literationen verteilen sich auf zwei Textsorten:- Informelle Gespräche, vorzugsweise mit Vertretern der älteren Generation, dokumentieren ein typisch mündliches, "basilektales" Kreol.- Auszüge aus Radiosendungen (beispielsweise politischen Debatten und Reportagen über das Gesundheitswesen) spiegeln die aktuelle Entwicklung der Kreolsprachen hin auf eine Funktionalisierung in offizielleren, formelleren, mithin der Schriftlichkeit näheren Bereichen wider.Das zweite Ziel der Textsammlung ist sozio-historischer Natur: es sollen authentische Zeugnisse festgehalten werden, die von Bedeutung für das kollektive Gedächtnis sind. Folglich kommen Schlüsselelemente der kreolischen Lebenswelt zur Sprache, die in der heutigen Zeit des schnellen gesellschaftlichen Wandels dem Vergessen ausgeliefert sind. So ist die Rede vom unterschiedlichen Verhältnis zu Zeit und Raum (Fortbewegungsmittel, Weg-Dauer), von Ereignissen der Kolonialgeschichte (Konflikt mit der Kolonialmacht in Dominika, Zwangsexil von widerständigen afrikanischen Königen auf den Seychellen), von religiösen Riten (Totenwachen in Guadeloupe) und von populären Glaubensvorstellungen (Sternschnuppen in Haiti) usw.Die kreolischen Texte sind in das Französische übersetzt und reichhaltig kommentiert. Zum Korpusband gehören zwei CDs mit allen transkribierten Tondokumenten.
