Exploring a range of violent and non-violent forms of resistance, the book goes on to ask how these are related to the arts, what form of civility they require and whether they undermine the functioning of institutions. In the final section of the book, the contributors examine the normative foundations of democratic practices and institutions, especially with regard to the tension between human rights and democracy and the special character of democratic authority.

Frequently, the Roma have become the target of nationalism, extremism, and racism. At the same time, they have been approached in terms of human rights and become the focus of programs dedicated to inclusion, anti-discrimination, and combatting poverty. Internationale Politische Theorie ist ein relativ neuer Bereich in Philosophie und Politikwissenschaft, der aufgrund der politischen und globalen Entwicklungen (Globalisierung des Wirtschafts- und Finanzsystems, Finanzkrise, weltweite Prozesse der Demokratisierung, Staatenzerfall etc.) zunehmend an Bedeutung gewinnt. Abstracts:Heike Baranzke: Menschenwürde zwischen Recht und PflichtNach den Menschenrechtsverletzungen des Zweiten Weltkriegs wurde der Menschenwürdebegriff in die Charta der Vereinten Nationen (1945) und in die Allgemeine Menschenrechtserklärung (1948) und daraufhin dann auch in das Grundgesetz der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (1949) aufgenommen. Aufgrund dessen ist es in ethischen Diskussionen üblich geworden, Menschenwürde als einen Rechtsbegriff zu betrachten. In der Debatte wird meist die Tatsache vernachlässigt, dass der Begriff der Menschenwürde viel älter als der Begriff der Menschenrechte ist und dass die frühe Menschenrechtsbewegung im 18. Jahrhundert keinen Gebrauch von dem Begriff der Würde machte. Die Menschenwürdeidee, erstmals erwähnt bei Cicero, wurzelt in der stoischen Tugendethik, und diese Tatsache bildet - so die These - bis heute ihren innersten Bedeutungskern. Da in Immanuel Kants "Metaphysik der Sitten" Rechtslehre und Tugendlehre zwei systematisch aufeinander bezogene Teile seiner Moralphilosophie sind, ist sein tugendethischer Würdebegriff auch für die moralische Legitimation des Rechts relevant. So bereitet Kant die Karriere der Menschenwürde als Rechtsbegriff im 20. Jahrhundert vor. Aus dieser Perspektive fordert die Frage nach dem Verhältnis von Ethik, Moral und Recht im Begriff der Würde neue differenzierte Antworten heraus.Human dignity between rights and dutiesBecause of the violation of human rights in World War II the concept of human dignity was enshrined in the Charta of the United Nations (1945) and in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948). As a consequence, it was also incorporated into the German Basic Law in 1949. It is therefore common in ethical debates to regard human dignity exclusively as a concept of law. The debate neglects the fact that the concept of human dignity is much older than the human rights concept.
