Hearing, health, and technologies are entangled in multi-faceted ways. This edited volume addresses this complex relationship by arguing that modern hearing was and is increasingly linked to and mediated by technological innovations. By providing a set of original interdisciplinary investigations that shed new light on the history, theory, and practices of hearing techniques, it is able to explore the heterogeneous entanglements of sound, hearing practices, technologies, and health issues. As the first book to bring together historians, scholars from media studies, social sciences, cultural studies, acoustics, and neuroscientists, the volume discusses modern technologies and their decisive impact on how "normal" hearing, enhanced and smart hearing, as well as hearing impairment have been configured. It brings both new insights into the histories of hearing technologies as well as allowing us to better understand how enabling hearing technologies have currently been unfolding an increasingly hybrid ecology engaging smart hearing devices and offering stress-free hearing and acoustic well-being in novel auditory environments. Der Sammelband analysiert das Verhältnis von digitalen Medien und Dis/Ability aus einer interdisziplinären Perspektive. Dis/Ability wird dabei als subjektives wie soziales und geschichtliches Phänomen verstanden, das aus den wechselseitigen Relationen behinderter Körper, Sinneserfahrungen und Technologien entsteht. Die Beiträge untersuchen aktuelle und historische Fallbeispiele im Kontext technologischer Innovationen, aktivistischer Praktiken und digitaler Zugänglichkeitsfragen.

This volume unravels the debates on the »Participation Age«: Instead of perpetuating visions of social »all-inclusion« or the »digital divide«, the collection reclaims collectivity as an effect of technological and historical conditions.Thinking of participation both as promise and duty, the contributions analyse the attractions and impositions connected to the socio-technical formation of collectivities. The constraints of participation are addressed by focusing on the mutual shaping of user practices and technological environments. It is hence a relational thinking that allows specifying the manifold interconnections of technology, practices and discourses.

Lassen sich Sehen und Hören als mediale Praktiken verstehen? Dieser Band geht davon aus, dass sinnliche Wahrnehmungen stets als Effekte soziotechnischer Assemblagen zu begreifen sind. Anhand von Fallbeispielen untersuchen die Beitragenden exemplarische Konfigurationen des »doing seeing« oder »doing hearing«, um die dichte Verschränkung sinnlicher Wahrnehmungen und technologischer Umwelten aufzuzeigen und zu analysieren. Sie machen das Zusammenspiel von Körpern und technischen Dingen in spezifischen Handlungszusammenhängen beobachtbar, in dem nicht nur Technologien des Selbst relevant werden, sondern sich auch Formen von Gouvernemedialität abzeichnen.
