Although prison can present a critical opportunity to engage with offenders through interventions and programming, reoffending rates among those released from prison remain stubbornly high. Sport can be a means through which to engage with even the most challenging and complex individuals caught up in a cycle of offending and imprisonment, by offering an alternative means of excitement and risk taking to that gained through engaging in offending behaviour, or by providing an alternative social network and access to positive role models. This is the first book to explore the role of sport in prisons and its subsequent impact on rehabilitation and behavioural change. The book draws on research literature on the beneficial role of sport in community settings and on prison cultures and regimes, across disciplines including criminology, psychology, sociology and sport studies, as well as original qualitative and quantitative data gathered from research in prisons. It unpacks the meanings that prisoners and staff attach to sport participation and interventions in order to understand how to promote behavioural change through sport most effectively, while identifying and tackling the key emerging issues and challenges.Sport in Prison is essential reading for any advanced student, researcher, policy-maker or professional working in the criminal justice system with an interest in prisons, offending behaviour, rehabilitation, sport development, or the wider social significance of sport.

Prison Health and Wellbeing blends theory with lived experience to explore the complex challenges and interventions that shape health and wellbeing for those living in, working in, and visiting prisons.People in prison are far from a homogenous group, yet epidemiological evidence consistently shows higher rates of ill-health compared to the wider population. Historically, research has focused almost exclusively on individuals in custody, often overlooking the health needs of prison staff and others within these environments. This book addresses these gaps by offering comprehensive insights into the social, structural and cultural factors that influence health in prison contexts. Moving beyond a narrow focus on disease, disability and deficit, it adopts a salutogenic perspective – asking what keeps people healthy, not just what makes them ill. By reframing prison health through a holistic lens, this book provides a critical foundation for improving wellbeing in one of society’s most challenging environments.Prison Health and Wellbeing is an essential resource for students and scholars of criminology, public health and health promotion. It will also prove invaluable for policymakers, commissioners and practitioners delivering health services in prisons.

This book examines the use of sport and physical activity-based interventions as a means by which to address crime and antisocial behaviour.Covering a range of different sporting and physical activities across an array of social contexts involving both adult and youth populations, this book provides insight into the way in which sport and physical activity are interpreted by participants and practitioners and how these interpretations relate to broader policy objectives within and across criminal justice systems. Featuring contributions co-written by academics and practitioners, the book presents fascinating case studies from around the world, including the use of yoga in prisons, e-cycling and social reintegration, and rehabilitation and resettlement through parkrun. With criminal justice at the heart of ongoing political and academic debates, this book is timely reading for any researcher, policymaker, practitioner or advanced student working in sport policy, sport development, criminology, social work or youth work.

This volume examines how volunteers and non-profit programs encourage institutional change in prisons and offer individual support and services to people who are housed behind bars. Collectively, the chapters highlight beneficial practices while raising critical questions about the role of the voluntary sector in prison and reentry settings.
