Classical Theories of Money, Output and Inflation
A Study in Historical Economics

Challenges the conventional view that monetarism, or the theory of money, is a necessary part of classical economics and shows, in a historical account of monetary controversy, that the framework upon which classical (and Marxian) analysis is based suggests an alternative account of the inflationary process. A corollary of the argument is that the monetarist approach is a logically necessary component of neoclassical analysis and that any attempt to criticise that approach in a fundamental way must involve an explicit rejection of the conceptual structure of neoclassical economics.

In recent years, a great deal of attention has been focussed on the undertaking of managing innovation. Without the right focus, resourcing and capabilities, firms struggle to create value through innovation. However, the task of managing innovation is one of continuous paradoxes where an overly structured mind-set can impede entrepreneurship, creativity, culture and the right conditions for disruption. The question remains of how we can have the right lens to properly understand and appreciate innovation, and how we can have a flexible set of tools, techniques and perspectives to support innovation. This concise text introduces readers to one of the fundamental ideas in the business world.Insights into the key ingredients of innovation, including business models, services, entrepreneurship and creativity are analysed alongside core contexts, such as disruptive technology. Students of business and management will appreciate additional coverage of the future of the field, including open innovation and the dark side of digital disruption. This accessible book provides a thought-provoking, stimulating perspective that will make it a valuable resource for a range of academic and student audiences across business and management disciplines.

This Companion provides a review of global value chains (GVCs) and the megatrends that are shaping them and will continue to reshape them in deep-set trajectories of change over the next few decades. Megatrends herald both challenges and opportunities. With the growing interest among business leaders and researchers in GVCs, this is a reference work which fills a gap in current literature by focusing on the new features of GVCs, including the shift of global purchasing power towards developing economies, the significance of emerging technologies and data analytics, the increasing tensions between globalisation and de-globalisation, and the role of micro-multinationals, start-up entrepreneurs, the public sector and middle markets in a fast-changing global economy. The early chapters are essentially intradisciplinary in character, with the first seeking to explore some historical aspects of GVCs. Subsequent chapters cover the theory and practice of operations and supply chain management, emerging supply chain technologies, and the impact of inter-firm collaboration across sectors and economies. The final chapters take a more interdisciplinary approach and examine topics at the interface of GVCs with the economy, society, culture and politics. This comprehensive handbook provides a timely analysis of leading-edge global megatrends and practices in one volume.

A central concern of economists, policymakers and civil society in recent years has been the persistent and widespread slowdown in global productivity growth. This stands in stark contrast to the robust productivity performance and associated prosperity witnessed across advanced economies in previous decades. The productivity slowdown represents a significant concern because it underpins the tensions emerging from income and wealth inequality, an expanded corporate profit share and geopolitical friction as established and emerging economic powers vie for global market supremacy. History offers numerous examples of technological advancement coinciding with heightened economic uncertainty and political discontent, yet these were predominantly periods of accelerated productivity growth. This volume delivers a guide to the contested terrain through a diversity of perspectives spanning mainstream economic analysis to institutional and political economy frameworks. It encompasses topics ranging from the definition and measurement of productivity to the function of research and innovation, financialisation and business dynamism, management quality and workplace relations and the existential implications and opportunities presented by climate change.Understanding Productivity targets policymakers, students across multiple disciplines and readers eager to examine the productivity 'black box', to participate in an informed exploration of theory and evidence-based perspectives and to formulate their own conclusions about this critically important dimension of contemporary economic discourse and debate.
