This volume explores recent advances in the chemically-based interactions between insects and plants, with an emphasis on mechanistic approaches, in an ecological and evolutionary context. In recent years, the number of identified semiochemicals has increased greatly and identifications have been made in many new taxonomic groups. In many cases many physiological processes and behavioural reactions have been documented, and new principles have emerged. Orientation mechanisms, the benefits of experience, plant-insect interactions, and interspecific interactions are included. The book is aimed at a graduate student and professional readership.

Eighty participants from 17 countries attended the symposium, which turned out to be a unique forum for the exchange of the latest worldwide findings on insect pheromones, an opportunity to discuss and debate unsettled issues, and a mechanism to define new directions in pheromone research and foster interdisciplinary collaborations.
