The International Workshop on "The Internet Challenge: Technology and Applications" is the fifth in a series of workshops that were established by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Technische Universitat Berlin. The goal of those workshops is to bring together researchers from both universities in order to present research results to an international community. Not only the enabling technology but also the challenging applications based on Internet technology are covered in the workshop such as: information extraction, content correlation analysis; electronic trading, electronic learning over the Internet; Internet-based robot control, telepresence, supply chain modelling; communication techniques as wireless LANs; multistage interconnection; quality of service; metacomputing and performance prediction; image retrieval; and spatial reasoning.

The International Workshop on “Human Interaction with Machines” is the sixth in a successful series of workshops that were established by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Technische Universität Berlin. The goal of those workshops is to bring together researchers from both universities in order to present research results to an international community. The series of workshops started in 1990 with the International Workshop on “Artificial Intelligence” and was continued with the International Workshop on “Advanced Software Technology” in 1994. Both workshops have been hosted by Shanghai Jiaotong University. In 1998 the third wo- shop took place in Berlin. This International Workshop on “Communi- tion Based Systems” was essentially based on results from the Graduiertenkolleg on Communication Based Systems that was funded by the German Research Society (DFG) from 1991 to 2000. The fourth Int- national Workshop on “Robotics and its Applications” was held in Sha- hai in 2000. The goal of those workshops is to bring together - searchers from both universities in order to present research results to an international community. The series of workshops started in 1990 with the International Workshop on Artificial Intelligence and was continued with the International Wo- shop on “Advanced Software Technology” in 1994. Both workshops have been hosted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University. In 1998 the third workshop took place in Berlin. In human interaction with machines we can distinguish two essential research directions. The first one is what is mostly described by "Usability" i.e. how should future devices like cellular phones or telecommunication services be used. A more intuitive access using e.g. natural language is required so that users do not have to study bulky manuals. The second one is where persons get directly into contact with machines like e.g. robots or medical devices. In this field two aspects are important. Machines cooperating with persons or being in close contact with persons should be safe so that even in the case of failures nobody is injured. The question is how to control such machines. All those aspects are covered in this workshop as e.g.:/ Observation of systems behavior/ Multi-modal User-Interfaces/ Self-healing Software/ Machine Learning/ Brain-Computer Interfaces/ Human-machine interaction/ Multi-modal machine attention.
