Colonialism and the Jews in German History brings together new and path-breaking studies on the historical relationship between colonialism and the Jews in Germany. The book considers the mutual influences on the situation of the Jews in Germany, including attitudes towards Jews and anti-Semitism but also Jewish self-conceptions, and the ideology and politics of German colonialism. The contributors discuss the ways in which colonial ideology and practice have affected the position of the Jews in Germany, and the relationship between anti-Semitism and colonial racism. In doing so, the volume introduces German colonialism as a relevant context for German-Jewish history, and it expands the perspective on German colonial history significantly by considering Jews both as distinct objects and also as agents within the field of German colonialism. The volume includes studies on the pre-colonial era, the phase of active German colonialism since the 1880s, and the time after Germany lost its colonies in the First World War. All these studies testify to the fact that German-Jewish history takes on additional significance if seen as part of a global history of collective relationships.

The first work to systematically investigate the potential for a dialogue between postcolonial studies and the history of Zionism.  There is an “unacknowledged kinship” between studies of Zionism and post-colonial studies, a kinship that deserves to be both discovered and acknowledged. Unacknowledged Kinships strives to facilitate a conversation between the historiography of Zionism and postcolonial studies by identifying and exploring possible linkages and affiliations between their subjects as well as the limits of such connections. The contributors to this volume discuss central theoretical concepts developed within the field of postcolonial studies, and they use these concepts to analyze crucial aspects of the history of Zionism while contextualizing Zionist thought, politics, and culture within colonial and postcolonial histories. Christian Wiese zählt zu den weltweit bedeutendsten Forschern auf dem Gebiet der Geschichte und Philosophie des modernen Judentums. Der Band versammelt anlässlich seines 60. Geburtstags Beiträge von 14 renommierten internationalen Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler, die sich mit seinem Werk auseinandersetzen, sowie Christian Wieses Antworten auf diese Beiträge. Die behandelten Themen reichen von der Wissenschaft des Judentums über die Forschung zur jüdisch-christlichen Beziehungsgeschichte und der Auseinandersetzung mit dem Denken bedeutender jüdischer Intellektueller wie Martin Buber, Franz Rosenzweig und Hans Jonas bis zur Geschichte des Antisemitismus. Ausgehend von den Arbeiten Wieses setzen sich die Beiträge mit den vielfältigen Impulsen auseinander, die er dem Feld gegeben hat und geben zugleich Einblick in die neueste Forschung zu diesen Themen. Christian Wiese wiederum reflek-tiert vor diesem Hintergrund seine eigene Arbeit und die Perspektiven dieser Forschung.
