Content and Language Integrated Learning has received a strong tailwind in European educational and language policies. It is on the verge of becoming a mainstream phenomenon. However, an overly speedy implementation of «CLIL for all» might bear a number of risks for all groups of stakeholders. The purpose of this book is to link the growing empirical knowledge about the full complexity of CLIL to the current European educational and language policies. The articles collected in this volume contribute to a more systematic evidence base of CLIL that has frequently been called for at a European level. This bi-lingual volume (English/German) brings together authors from several European countries to present significant findings from recent CLIL research in the light of the developments in education policy. Is two-way immersion education associated with social and intercultural benefits? This book examines social and intercultural benefits of bilingual or two-way immersion (TWI) schooling in Staatliche Europa-Schule Berlin (SESB). The author uses quantitative methods to compare SESB with mainstream education and identifies a series of statistically significant differences between the two. These findings contribute to the well-structured argument that SESB programmes can play a role in promoting social integration and group cohesiveness within schools and potentially in the wider society. The author also makes a number of recommendations for stakeholders and policymakers, and suggests that SESB may indeed serve as a useful model for other multilingual areas of Europe.

In Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), content and language learning proceed in parallel, the one supporting the other. CLIL has spread widely and has attracted a large number of studies. While most of these studies have focused on the language benefits of CLIL, this book focuses on both language and subject achievement. Against the background of autonomy theory and motivation, the author investigates to what extent learners at different proficiency levels are able to work in self-directed ways in CLIL settings.The analysis of data obtained from CLIL learners and teachers shows that the majority of participants do not see this integration as problematic, while data concerning student achievement point in a different direction. While results are positive concerning motivation and self-perception of achievement for both beginning and more advanced CLIL learners, this positive picture is not confirmed by performance data in the area of self-directed learning.
