Previously published as a special issue of Third World Quarterly, this volume seeks to analyze to what extent the controversial US policy of democratizing the Middle East with pre-emptive invasions was justified or effective. Post 9/11 the US developed a policy of War on Terror, taking the decision to democratize the Middle East with pre-emptive invasions in both Afghanistan and Iraq. As Barakat puts it "Iraq was deliberately de-constructed in order to be reconstructed in a new model." Looking not only at the evidence of democracy post-invasion, the author also considers the global, regional and internal politics leading up to the decision to invade. The effect is an insightful and vital volume that fulfils an urgent need and seeks to answer the questions most troubling the international community since the invasion of Iraq. Were the invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan an exploitation of military supremacy to secure a favourable balance of power for the US? Is it possible to build a stable democracy after a pre-emptive invasion? What is the current outlook for a stable democracy in Iraq?Reconstructing Post-Saddam Iraq is vital reading for all those interested in international politics and the future in Iraq.

The overarching objective of this book is to analyse the manner in which statebuilding-oriented research has and can influence policies in fragile, post-conflict environments. Large-scale, externally-assisted statebuilding is a relatively new and distinct foreign policy domain having risen to the forefront of the international agenda as the negative consequences of state weakness have been repeatedly revealed in the form of entrenched poverty, regional instability and serious threats to international security. Despite the increasing volume of research on statebuilding, the use and uptake of findings by those involved in policymaking remains largely under-examined. As such, the main themes running through the book relate to issues of research influence, use and uptake into policy. It grapples with problems associated with decision-making dynamics, knowledge management and the policy process and draws on concepts and analytical models developed within the public policy and research utilisation literature. This book will be of great interest to researchers, knowledge managers and policymakers working in the fields of post-war reconstruction, statebuilding, fragile states, stabilisation, conflict and development.

To tackle the paucity of adequate housing in the Muslim World, Strategic Rebuilding and Affordable Housing in the Muslim World brings together a cohort of essays that deal with the the latest approaches, policy discussions, attendant research methodologies and recommendations. The volume’s multidisciplinary contributors— academics, practitioners, architects, planners, researchers, urbanists, economists—offer valuable insights and critical analysis on strategic rebuilding of affordable and adequate housing, as well as the continuous improvement of living conditions. Each chapter broadens our understanding of the ‘house’ as a source of stability and security for individuals or families because one’s house is the center of emotional life, with its ability to provide serenity, safety, and self-worth. Therefore, weaving the many aspects of this argument together the contributors of this volume purport a point of view that is carefully well-thought-out to expand the focus from just addressing individual and family needs to looking at the wider community benefits. Furthermore, adequate housing will increasingly become the focus of re-settlement, urban renewal and re-investment, primarily to deal with the homeless conditions that already exist—the influx of refugees and internally displaced people (IDP’s) as the result of natural disasters (earthquakes and floods) and the collateral damage caused by war.

Images of warn-torn societies, and of the disruption and devastation that inevitably result, are a regular feature of today's media. How can such societies, devastated by war, be successfully rehabilitated? What are the challenges of reconstruction and development? "After the Conflict" brings together a team of leading researchers and professionals with wide involvement in post-conflict scenarios - including Afghanistan, Rwanda, Kosovo, Somalia and Indonesia - to address these issues. Drawing upon their extensive experience, they set out the requirements they have found to be necessary to successful long-term reconstruction. This unique work draws together for the first time in a single volume the wide range of specialist knowledge necessary to this major international concern and presents vital new insights essential to successful long-term reconstruction and development of countries in the aftermath of war.

Text in Arabic. This book raises the issue of reconstruction as an essential stage of recovery in countries that have suffered from violent conflicts and severe natural disasters, by focusing on the aspect of housing reconstruction in-particular, as the most necessity in ensuring a decent human life, and considering how important it actually is. The book is an important attempt to fill a clear gap in this field by relying on strong academic- scientific foundations and controls, and providing a theoretical framework of concepts to study the stage of housing reconstruction within the context of studying crises and recovering from them, and presenting a strategic-political vision to get out of it, reflected by a wide range of previous experiences; According to the tripartite approach: humanity, development, and peace. Finally, the book represents a valuable scientific contribution to Arabic literature and enriches researches in the field of post-crisis and disaster reconstruction. It contributes to the formation of a broad knowledge base fuelled by realistic models in understanding the possibilities, lessons, and challenges.
