Das Moment des Verausgabens zeichnet sich in einer Überschreitung ab, die Grenzen und Grenzziehungen zugleich in Frage stellt und (neu) formiert. Als Verausgabung ist wahrnehmbar und beschreibbar, was die Begrenzungen gegebener Ressourcen überwindet und einen vorhandenen Status quo überbietet. Warenhäuser waren von Beginn an Orte, an denen moderne Konsum- und Weltverhältnisse ausgestellt und erfahrbar wurden. Damit wurden sie auch zu Kristallisationspunkten einer moralisch aufgeladenen, mit antisemitischen und misogynen Stereotypen durchsetzten Auseinandersetzung um den beginnenden Massenkonsum und die Modernisierung des Kaiserreichs.Thomas Lenz analysiert den Diskurs um Warenhaus und (Massen-)Konsum in den Wissenschaften, der Öffentlichkeit und in den Literaturen zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts. Der soziologische Blick auf den Konsum um 1900 wird hierbei - am Beispiel der Positionen von Weber, Simmel, Sombart und Veblen - mit der Debatte um die »unerwünschte Betriebsform« Warenhaus verknüpft.
