Ancient lakes are exceptional freshwater environments that have continued to exist for hundreds of thousands of years. They have long been recognized as centres of biodiversity and hotspots of evolution. During recent decades, speciation in ancient lakes has emerged as an important and exciting topic in evolutionary biology.

The contributions in this volume deal with patterns and processes of biological diversification in three prominent ancient lake systems. Of these, the famous East African Great Lakes already have a strong tradition of evolutionary studies, but the two other systems have so far received much less attention. The exceptional biodiversity of the European sister lakes Ohrid and Prespa of the Balkans has long been known, but has largely been neglected in the international literature until recently. The rich biota and problems of its evolution in the two central lake systems on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, in turn, have only lately started to draw scientific attention.

This volume aims at deepening the awareness of the unusual biological diversity in ancient lakes in general, and of the role of these lakes as natural laboratories for the study of speciation and diversification in particular. It should stimulate further research that will lead to a better understanding of key evolutionary processes in these lakes, and to knowledge that might help in mitigating the deterioration of their diversity in the future.

A central aim and ever-lasting dream of computer science is to put the development of hardware and software systems on a mathematical basis which is both firm and practical. Such a scientific foundation is needed especially for the construction of reactive programs, like communication protocols or control systems.

For the construction and analysis of reactive systems an elegant and powerful theory has been developed based on automata theory, logical systems for the specification of nonterminating behavior, and infinite two-person games.

The 19 chapters presented in this multi-author monograph give a consolidated overview of the research results achieved in the theory of automata, logics, and infinite games during the past 10 years. Special emphasis is placed on coherent style, complete coverage of all relevant topics, motivation, examples, justification of constructions, and exercises.

Mashup hat sich als Begriff eingebürgert für auditiv, visuell, audiovisuell „vermischte“ Neuarrangements, Collagen, Bricolagen in der Musik, in Videos, in Computerspielen, in der (aktuellen Medien-)Kunst, in der Architektur. Es handelt sich um eine Verbindung heterogener Elemente, die etwas (scheinbar) Neues hervorbringen. Im Internet verbinden Websites unterschiedliche Elemente (beispielsweise Musik, Video, Hyperlinks) mit unterschiedlichen Funktionen. Ausgangspunkt für diesen Band ist die These, dass es einerseits mediale und kulturelle Techniken gibt, die diese Form des Mischgenres erst ermöglichen. Andererseits muss berücksichtigt werden, dass die mediale Kompetenz der User exponentiell angestiegen ist und weiter ansteigt. Der Band geht unter anderem der Frage nach, inwieweit es sich bei Mashups um eine qualitativ neue Form der Aneignung und/oder nur eine produktive Auseinandersetzung mit medialen Angeboten handelt.

This volume deals with the American production "Spartacus" and the British-American-Italian co-production Rome. In the examination of the present, a turn to Greek or Roman antiquity can be observed again and again. To find there the roots of Western society for politics, economics or philosophy, or to derive comparative arguments for expansionist efforts or decline, is not just part of the rhetorical commonplace. So it is not surprising that the TV series format also takes up this period. Whereas in Rome the attempt is made to work through the historical guidelines in great detail, in Spartacus, apart from the rough sketch of the plot, one can speak of a far-reaching neglect of the historical situation. From a (media) ethical perspective, specific approaches to responsibility, the transmission of values, loyalty, education, self-discipline, and religion can be identified in the series, which can be interpreted as self-statements of the present or the producers.

Die Auseinandersetzung mit den Grenzen und Grenzüberschreitungen vernünftigen Verstehens ist ein wesentlicher Bestandteil von phantastisch-spekulativen Erzählungen in populären Medienkulturen.Populärkulturelle Wissensproduktionen entfalten sich häufig im unaufgelösten Spannungsfeld von Wissen und Glauben, Realität und Simulation, Natürlichem und Übernatürlichem. Sie bleiben grundlegend spekulativ.»Pop & Mystery« untersucht anhand von Film, Fernsehen, Musik und Internet, wie spekulative Wissensproduktionen und Wissensirritationen einerseits inszeniert und diskutiert werden - und wie sie sich andererseits medial, technisch, gesellschaftlich und kulturell auswirken.Hierbei spielen populärkulturelle Medienkulturen mit den Regeln der Fiktionen und Fiktionsdiskurse und setzen dabei Normen mimetischer Konventionen außer Kraft.
