This is a volume of previously unpublished research studies that were conducted during the Management in the 1990s project at the Sloan School of MIT. It is a companion volume to the principal book of the project, The Corporation of the 1990s: Information Technology and Organizational Transformation. This book is organized into three sections: the IT Revolution; Strategic Options; and The Organization and Management Response. Authors of the studies are among the most prominent of the Sloan School people, including Eric Von Hippel, Edgar Schein, Michael Piore, Paul Osterman, and Thomas Kochan. Almost every aspect of energy and nutrient metabolism is altered by hormonal and other physiological changes during pregnancy and lactation. While it is evident that hormonal adjustments affect nutrient requirements, these are rarely considered when nutrient recommen­ dations are made for pregnant or lactating women, and often neglected during evaluation of nutritional status. In addition, changes in nutrient metabolism during the stages of pregnancy and oflactation are usually considered separately, while in reality events during pregnancy can have a major influence on nutritional status and nutrient requirements during lactation. The purpose of this volume is to describe changes in the metabolism of important nutrients during pregnancy and lactation, including the physiological basis for these changes and their implications for nutrient requirements and assessment. This volume focuses on population displacement in Northeast Africa.For many people, flight across an international border occurs repeatedly and is not a uniquely traumatic event. For many more, displacement has occurred within their own countries. The contributors suggest that in situations of such long-term upheaval, notions of flight into refuge and repatriation to a homeland cease to have much meaning. These populations have received minimal assistance from international organizations and have lacked protection from oppressive governments and marauding guerillas. Excavations along the new road line have revealed nearly 6000 years of human activity, from a massive marker post erected by early Neolithic farmers at the head of a dry valley to a bizarre burial of several different animals dating to the sixteenth century AD.

This report presents the results of archaeological investigations along the 17km-long Gloucester Security of Supply Water Pipeline in the vicinity of Tewkesbury. The archaeological mitigation works were commissioned by Severn Trent Water; following evaluation of the whole route, three sites were chosen for excavation, at Fiddington and Pamington in Gloucestershire and at Bredon’s Norton in Worcestershire.The site at Pamington revealed oval enclosures of mid-late Iron Age date, that at Fiddington elements of a rural settlement spanning all of the Roman period. At Bredon’s Norton the pipeline cut through a series of Iron Age and Roman settlement enclosures and their internal features, and also included human burials of both periods. Unusually, one Iron Age burial was accompanied by a saw, and among the Roman burials was a cemetery of seven newborn infants.An unexpected discovery was the remains of a Roman bath-house with a plunge pool flagged with stones and decorated with painted wall-plaster. This was later drained and had a central cistern inserted, while the loft was used to store grain. The building was destroyed by fire at the very end of the Roman period, resulting in the exceptional preservation of charred grain, together with fragmentary timbers, on the floor.

Excavation of a Middle Iron Age enclosed settlement and Romano-British enclosures was carried out in advance of gravel extraction over three short seasons between June 1983 and January 1985. The site was not visible from aerial photographs, and first appeared during topsoil stripping by ARC Ltd. It lay on low-lying Frist Gravel Terrace E of the river Windrush (SP 426035) and the occupied areas lay upon a slightly higher gravel island than the surrounding land. Because of the high water table waterlogged remains were preserved in the deepest features.Within the main settlement, Site A, the Iron Age settlement consisted of at least four small penannular enclosures, probably surrounding houses, all of which had more than one phase of use and several of which may have been contemporary. There were only two pits and no definite four-post structures, and the environmental evidence suggests that arable agriculture was not practised close to the site. The animal bones indicate predominantly cattle, horses and sheep; a high percentage of horses compared with other sites in the region suggests horse-breeding was a significant part of the economy. A relict stream course just S of the settlement may have been active at this time; there was also a shallow well c.2.0m deep within the main enclosure. Pottery and C14 dates suggest that occupation fell entirely within the later part of the Middle Iron Age, most probably between 250 BC and 50 BC. After a break in occupation the main Iron Age enclosure was reused in the later 1st/early 2nd century AD. A series of ditch circuits was dug respecting the main enclosure , and these were followed by a trackway and field system incorporating a subrectangular enclosure which cut across but overlay the main Iron Age enclosure. There was a succession of these subrectangular enclosures, apparently dating between the early 3rd century and the mid 4th century AD. The only features within the Romano-British enclosures were a few shallow pits and short lengths of gully, a scatter of postholes and one or two wells. The density of Romano-British pottery suggests that domestic occupation lay close by, but there was no firm evidence for structures within the excavated area.Two hundred metres to the NE another area of Romano-British enclosure boundary ditches and wells was uncovered (Site B). The pottery indicates 2nd-century occupation close by, with much smaller scale activity in the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. Again, no evidence for structures was recovered, though one probable domestic enclosure was seen. In the medieval period Site A was cultivated. Finds from one or two of the wells suggest these may have been medieval and that there was an early 11th-12th century phase of pasture before arable cultivation began. On Site B one pit of the 11th-12th century was found, and several diches forming rectilinear enclosures were possibly of this date.

The archaeological remains at Roughground Farm cover an area of c 8 hectares on the second gravel terrace just north of Lechlade between the rivers Leach and Thames (SP 216/009 to 221/005). The site was investigated by Margaret Jones in advance of gravel extraction between 1957 and 1965. These excavations revealed evidence of occupation from the Late Neolithic to the end of the Roman period and represent one of the first landscape studies undertaken in this country. The work was stimulated by the discovery of a Roman villa, whose buildings were partly investigated in 1957 and 1959. Further excavations on the villa buildings were carried out by Tim Allen in 1981-2 and in 1990 prior to a housing development.The Neolithic occupation consists of a small cluster of pits containing Grooved Ware, contrasting with a dispersed scatter of pits with Beaker pottery. The Earlier Bronze Age is only represented by a stray sherd, but there is a wide scatter of Later Bronze Age pits, which tend to congregate in small groups. In the Early Iron Age the landscape was divided by large boundary ditches, roughly parallel to one another and at right angles to the river Leach, with smaller ditched subdivisions. This land-division appears to respect established trackways, which met within the excavated area. Pit groups indicate an arable economy and occupation, including posthole groups and burials, was concentrated at the east edge of the site.The Middle and Late Iron Ages are hardly represented, but an Early Roman native settlement was established just west of the trackways. This included an oval house-enclosure with accompanying pit-group, small stock enclosures, and pens, lying within a larger rectilinear enclosure. Between the trackways and the settlement was an open 'green'-like area. The economy was similar to that of the Iron Age and this settlement persisted until the early 2nd century AD, when it was replaced by the building of a villa.At least two masonry buildings were put up in the mid 2nd century and were surrounded by an enclosure ditch. One of these was an aisled building, with^an apsidal end unique in Roman Britain. Outside this was a regular system of paddocks and larger fields laid out to a standard unit of length. The villa occupation area, however, kept within the limits of the preceding native settlement. Trackways and droveways approaching the villa were delineated by boundary ditches.In the 3rd century another large domestic building was constructed, while the ends of the trackways east of the villa were overlaid by two groups of enclosures facing each other across the 'green', which were used for various agricultural and semi-industrial activities and may also have been occupied. These may represent centralisation of the villa's estate management. Small groups of late Roman burials were found in and around these enclosures. In the 4th century, if not before, another domestic building was added to the villa. Occupation of the villa and adjacent enclosures continued beyond 360 AD, but possibly not as late as the end of the 4th century.There was very little evidence of Saxon activity, although the villa buildings were robbed for stone for graves in this period. The east part of the site was overlaid by ridge and furrow in the medieval period and the west appears to have been pasture; both parts remained open fields until gravel extraction began in the 1930s. Virtually the whole site has now been destroyed.
