The Invisible Religion is a modern classic of social science. The relationship between science and belief has been a prominent subject of public debate for many years, one that has relevance to everything from science communication, health and education to immigration and national values. Yet, sociological analysis of these subjects remains surprisingly scarce.This wide-ranging book critically reviews the ways in which religious and non-religious belief systems interact with scientific theories and practices. Contributors explore how, for some secularists, ‘science’ forms an important part of social identity. Others examine how many contemporary religious movements justify their beliefs by making a claim upon science. Moving beyond the traditional focus on the United States, the book shows how debates about science and belief are firmly embedded in political conflict, class, community and culture.

Taking a field theoretical approach, the book avoids problems of prior creationism research, making it possible to identify the mechanisms through which creationism generates new strategies, arguments, and media output.

Jahrhunderts wollte Max Weber den Methodenstreit in der Nationalökonomie überwinden und eine "Theorie" genannte Form der Forschung begründen, die den Reichtum des historischen Lebens berücksichtigt. Dabei bediente er sich der Philosophie des Südwestdeutschen Neukantianismus, die er um eine aus den Naturwissenschaften stammende Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie und eine aus der Ästhetik stammende Idealtypenlehre ergänzte. Seine Suchbewegungen durchmessen das ganze damalige intellektuelle Feld, um soziales Handeln als Gegenstand sowie deutendes Verstehen und kausales Erklären als Methode einer wertfreien sozialwissenschaftlichen Erkenntnis zu begründen. Ein wichtiges Medium wurde ab 1904 das von ihm mitherausgegebene "Archiv für Sozialwissenschaft und Sozialpolitik".Dieser Band legt die frühen methodologischen Schriften, darunter den "Objektivitäts"-Aufsatz und das "Geleitwort", textkritisch geprüft und kommentiert vor. Der "Stammler"-Nachtrag wird nach dem Originalmanuskript neu ediert. Die Sacherläuterungen dokumentieren die vielfältigen Bezüge. Zitate, Literaturangaben und Anspielungen werden in den Apparaten aufgeschlüsselt.
