In July 1995, the Bosnian Serb Army commanded by General Ratko Mladic attacked the enclave of Srebrenica, a UN “safe area” since 1993, and massacred about 8,000 Bosniac men. While the responsibility for the massacre itself lays clearly with the Serb political and military leadership, the question of the responsibility of various international organizations and national authorities for the fall of the enclave is still passionately discussed, and has given rise to various rumors and conspiracy theories. Follow-up investigations by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and by several commissions have dissipated most of these rumors and contributed to a better knowledge of the Srebrenica events and the part played by the main local and international actors. This volume represents the first systematic, comparative analysis of those investigations. It brings together analyses from both the external standpoint of academics and the inside perspective of various professionals who participated directly in the inquiries, including police officers, members of parliament, high-ranking civil servants, and other experts. Evaluating how institutions establish facts and ascribe responsibilities, this volume presents a historiographical and epistemological reflection on the very possibility of writing a history of the present time.

There are roughly eight million Muslims in south-east Europe, among them Albanians, Bosniaks, Turks and Roma -- descendants of converts or settlers in the Ottoman period. This new history of the social, political and religious transformations that this population experienced in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries -- a period marked by the collapse of the Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian and Russian Empires and by the creation of the modern Balkan states -- will shed new light on the European Muslim experience. Southeast Europe's Muslims have experienced a slow and complex crystallisation of their respective national identities, which accelerated after 1945 as a result of the authoritarian modernisation of communist regimes and, in the late twentieth century, ended in nationalist mobilisations that precipitated the independence of Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo during the break-up of Milosevic's Yugoslavia. At a religious level, these populations have re--mained connected to the institutions established by the Ottoman Empire, as well as to various educational, intellectual and Sufi (mystic) networks. With the fall of communism, new transnational networks appeared, especially neo-Salafist and neo- Sufi ones, although Europe's Balkan Muslims have not escaped the wider processes of secularisation.

Entre 1992 et 1995, la Bosnie-Herzégovine a été le théâtre d''une guerre sanglante, symbolisée par le siège de Sarajevo et le massacre de Srebrenica. Depuis, elle reste tiraillée entre les aspirations divergentes de ses trois communautés bosniaque (musulmane), serbe (orthodoxe) et croate (catholique). Toutefois, l''histoire post-ottomane de la Bosnie-Herzégovine n''est pas seulement marquée par la montée des idéologies nationalistes, mais aussi par la rémanence des logiques impériales. Du reste, de 1918 à 1992, la Yougoslavie fut-elle autre chose qu''un petit Empire sud-slave ?Dans ce contexte, l''histoire des musulmans bosniens reste singulière. Jusqu''aux années 1960, ceux-ci restent en effet étrangers à toute identification nationale et se replient sur leur identité religieuse. En 1968 seulement, la Yougoslavie communiste reconnaît l''existence d''une nation musulmane. Mais, dans le même temps, la modernisation accélérée de la société bosnienne se traduit par sa sécularisation rapide. En 1993, alors que la guerre fait rage, le nom national « Musulman » est abandonné au profit du nom « Bosniaque », mais la mise en avant de l''islam comme élément central de la nouvelle identité bosniaque s''accompagne de diverses tentatives de réislamisation.
