Respiratory and cardiac motion leads to image degradation in Positron Emission Tomography (PET), which impairs quantification. In this book, the authors present approaches to motion estimation and motion correction in thoracic PET. The approaches for motion estimation are based on dual gating and mass-preserving image registration (VAMPIRE) and mass-preserving optical flow (MPOF). With mass-preservation, image intensity modulations caused by highly non-rigid cardiac motion are accounted for. Within the image registration framework different data terms, different variants of regularization and parametric and non-parametric motion models are examined. Within the optical flow framework, different data terms and further non-quadratic penalization are also discussed. The approaches for motion correction particularly focus on pipelines in dual gated PET. A quantitative evaluation of the proposed approaches is performed on software phantom data with accompanied ground-truth motion information. Further, clinical applicability is shown on patient data. The book concludes with an outlook of recent developments and potential future advances in the field of PET motion correction.

CAIP has been held biennially since 1985: Berlin (1985), Wismar (1987), Leipzig (1989), Dresden (1991), Budapest (1993), Prague (1995), Kiel (1997), Ljubljana (1999), Warsaw (2001), Groningen (2003), Paris (2005), and Vienna (2007). Initially, this conference series served as a forum for getting together s- entistsfromEastandWestEurope.Nowadays,CAIPenjoysahighinternational visibility and attracts participants from all over the world. For CAIP 2009 we received a record number of 405 submissions. All papers were reviewed by two, and in most cases, three reviewers. Finally, 148 papers were selected for presentation at the conference, resulting in an acceptance rate of 36%. All Program Committee members and additional reviewers listed here deserve a great thanks for their timely and competent reviews. The accepted papers were presented either as oral presentations or posters in a single-track program.In addition, wewereveryhappyto haveAljoscha Smolicand David G. Storkasourinvitedspeakerstopresenttheirworkintwofascinatingareas.With this scienti?c program we hope to continue the tradition of CAIP in providing a forum for scienti?c exchange at a high quality level. The portable device and mobile phone market has witnessed rapid growth in the last few years with the emergence of several revolutionary products such as mobile TV, converging iPhone and digital cameras that combine music, phone and video functionalities into one device. The proliferation of this market has further bene?ted from the competition in software and applications for smart phones such as Google’s Android operating system and Apple’s iPhone App- Store, stimulating tens of thousands of mobile applications that are made ava- able by individual and enterprise developers. Whereas the mobile device has become ubiquitous in people’s daily life not only as a cellular phone but also as a media player, a mobile computing device, and a personal assistant, it is p- ticularly important to address challenges timely in applying advanced pattern recognition, signal, information and multimedia processing techniques, and new emerging networking technologies to such mobile systems. The primary objective of this book is to foster interdisciplinary discussions and research in mobile multimedia processing techniques, applications and s- tems, as well as to provide stimulus to researchers on pushing the frontier of emerging new technologies and applications. Today, climate change is among the most hotly-debated topics. The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), one of the three financial mechanisms under the Kyoto Protocol open to developing and developed countries, was devised to assist in mitigation of global warming. This book discusses what China should do to make full use of the CDM to promote sustainable development and to meet the challenge of climate change from a legal perspective. The findings lead to the conclusion that the CDM has limitations in promoting sustainable development in China, and thus should be regarded only as a complementary instrument in combating climate change. Legal strategies for improving the implementation of CDM projects under the legal framework in China are thus put forward, and some proposals for China to meet the challenge of climate change in the post-2012 era are made.This book offers new insights to academics and policymakers both in the public and private sector. It is intended for legal practitioners and researchers on carbon trading as well as policymakers interested in the role of developing countries in climate change law. In addition, it is of interest to stakeholders of CDM projects.
