This is one of the first film scripts by Ilya Ilf and Yevgeni Petrov. This is a mute film, so-called «socialistic comedy». This is a story about the brigade of the builders-concreters, who are building a huge dam for the new hydroelectric power station and about their brigadier Bitiugov. This is a story, when the campaign of glorification and praising of the modest and simple workers reaches the grandiose and just unbelievable level, from which the workers feel the bad results themselves.

In front of us we can see a wedding. It is nothing else but bourgeois wedding, in which the fiancé Stasik Marhotsky and his fiancée Nata Marhotskaya-Lifshits have joined in holy matrimony and are happily meeting the guests. Let us say so, that the things Ellochka Shchukina was trying to put in «the Twelve Chairs» - in the «strong Feeling» blossoms in the magnificent blossoming. Everything is striking and prodigious here, but especially - the great craft, even more, it is inherent talent «to live and have fun in a foreign way». Though funny it is, but this play becomes very actual nowadays as well.

''The vice-king'''' - is a good example of such kind of work by Ilf and Petrov. A small vaudeville is fully dedicated to the desperate adventures by the accountant Berlaga to save his working position, who is against his will becomes the vice-king of India. However, in the «golden Calf» it is just a small episode. Here, in the play - this is a huge life drama. It is with a humoristic tendency.

In fact this is a peculiar diary of the travelling, fully without any of the ideological moments, which was just exceptional thing for the uneasy time. Two writers travel along the Usa from the west to the east and back, observing, describing, enthusiastic about some things, laughing at some things and just joking. As the modern American press wrote in those times, in particular the newspaper "news Express ": "this is one of the best books, written about America by the foreigner. It is a pleasant, but simultaneously restless task - to open America for yourself again looking at it through the author`s eyes".

Ilya Ilf (1897-1937) and Yevgeny Petrov (1903-1942) were classics of Russian satirical prose and co-authors of legendary novels that created one of the most striking and witty characters in Russian literature: Ostap Bender, the "e;great schemer,"e; a man of indefatigable wit, ingenuity, and irony. This volume includes both of these writers' famous works "e;The Twelve Chairs"e; (1928) and "e;The Golden Calf"e; (1931) in their expanded versions, including fragments and episodes excluded from the first editions for censorship reasons. "e;The Twelve Chairs"e; is a satirical novel about the search for diamonds hidden in one of the chairs in Madame Petukhova's suite. Set against the backdrop of Soviet reality in the late 1920s, a comedy of human characters unfolds, where dreams, greed, stupidity, and resourcefulness collide. In "e;The Golden Calf,"e; the action extends beyond the confines of provincial towns: Ostap Bender, now more experienced and cautious, seeks a path to wealth and freedom in a country where even a million rubles is no guarantee of success. Ilf and Petrov created not just a satire on the society of their time, but a timeless comedy of human vices and illusions. Their novels are full of humor, paradoxes, and brilliant dialogue, and Ostap Bender has long become a symbol of resourcefulness, charm, and a philosophy of survival.
