All about the railroad: old coaches made new, ancient steam engines, historic hotels, stations and campsites along 64 miles of scenic track unlike any other railroad in the USA and the only one ever to penetrate to the heart of a national park. On 17 September 1989, 88 years to the day from the date the first steam engine puffed to the Grand Canyon, a reborn Grand Canyon train made its way from Williams to the Grand Canyon along the same historic route. The resurrection of the Grand Canyon Railway signifies more than steam and thunder, nostalgia and history. It is part of a growing recognition of the need to soften the environmental impact made by four million annual visitors to the Canyon. The railroad uses a clean burning fuel of oil and grey water for engine power and may reduce peak motor traffic in the Canyon park by as much as 4000 vehicles per day.

A history of Jerome and the Verde Valley with its mines and colorful characters.

With their sensitive eye for natural beauties, the Indians called their river The Moonshell. When the French explorers first poled up its waters, taking note of its sandbars and shallowness, they renamed it, quite aptly but unexcitingly, The Platte ('flat' in French). Since that time, hundreds of thousands of pioneers have boated, tracked, traversed and cursed the Platte en route to their destinations or fates in the Rockies and the Far West.

The story of one woman's journey from a cultured life in pre-war Europe, through the devastation of Hitler's regime, to her commitment of helping the world understand the Holocaust.

Human beings inhabited Colorado for the past 12,000 years. The earliest people migrated across the land bridge between Asia and Alaska and made their way down the eastern side of the Rockies into Colorado. Some of the earliest people were hunters who herded mammoths over the edge of cliffs, pelting them with rocks and spears. Clovis man lived near Greeley as early as 9200 B.C. Flosom Man (distinguished from Clovis Man by the type of spearheads he crafted) hunted bison in eastern Colorado. By 7000 B.C., the desert people inhabited western Colorado, surviving on small game, berries and plants. Over thousands of years, the desert People evolved into the Basket Makers, whose culture was centered around the beautiful baskets they created for cooking, hauling water, carrying babies, and many other functions. Their descendants were the Indians of Mesa Verde the Anasazi who created the intriguing civilization today preserved in Mesa Verde National Park. At the end of the Basket Makers' period in the southwest, Fremont Man inhabited the northern/central portions of western Colorado. Near Grand Junction, you can see petroglyphs scratched into the rock by these early people. Following the disappearance of the Cliff Dwellers from Mesa Verde in 1300 A.D., Spanish explorers began working their way north from Mexico, among them Francisco Vasquez de Coronado who may have entered what is today Colorado on his exploration to the Seven Cities of Gold in 1540. The Ute Indians inhabited the western and mountain sections of Colorado; by 1800, the Arapaho and Cheyenne Indians were moving into the eastern plains, soon to be driven out by the white man in his pursuit of Manifest Destiny. In preparing this selection of Colorado profiles, we are most grateful to Maxine Benson, former Colorado State Historian, for her critical evaluation of the historical data. A Colorado History, which she co-authored with Carl Ubbelohde and Duane Smith, is an excellent survey of the state's past. For additional reading, there are full biographies of nearly all the people presented in the following vignettes.

Along the chain of the Rocky Mountains, which runs from Canada to New Mexico, the mountains in Colorado are the highest 53 peaks over 14,000 feet high and more than a thousand over 10,000 feet. It's been said that if you took a flat-iron to Colorado, it would press out to a state the size of Texas. (But since that would irritate the Texans, no one has yet tried it!)

The author shares 40 years of soul searching in the aftermath of Germany's total defeat and destruction.

As you travel the state, read about the life and times of people from years past. An excellent map in the centrefold, and driving directions on each page make it easy to find the ghost towns, some now abandoned and others alive with new "pioneers".

The memory of Buffalo Bill Cody, personification of the Old West, is enshrined today at the Buffalo Bill Memorial Museum atop Lookout Mountain and overlooking Golden, Colorado. The Museum is operated by the Department of Parks and Recreation, City and County of Denver. From the town of Golden, which is also home to the Colorado Railroad Museum, the drive up Lariat Trail to the top of Lookout Mountain offers one of the most spectacular views within a short distance of Denver. Just four miles distant, and visible from Interstate Highway 70, is a resident buffalo herd.

Grayson helps us re-discover, through the good people of Hempfield, that plainest, commonest and rarest thing -- Friendship: A friend is one with whom we are fond of being when no business is afoot nor any entertainment contemplated. A man may well be silent with a friend.

People of the Troubled Water focuses on stories of people involved in early years of Missouri River history. It describes the adventures of explorers Lewis and Clark, trappers John Colter and Hugh Glass, artist George Catlin and scientist John James Audubon. The Hidatsa girl, Waheenee, finds her life forever changes by smallpox, and Mormon wife Jane Richards struggles to keep her faith through an incredible winter. The Missouri's raging waters change nearly everyone who challenge them. The Overland Journal described the book as "a joy to read."

Just mention Colorado to the avid rail fan and you have their interest; add the term 'narrow gauge' and you have their undivided attention. Why this special interest in the Centennial State's railroads which span 120 years? One reason is Colorado's geography -- relatively flat plains in the eastern third of the state, the rugged Rocky Mountains in the central and southwest areas. Colorado's railroads traverse all these regions -- from a 2285 foot elevation to the heights of 14,000 foot peaks. This geographical configuration makes Colorado railroading second to none.

Your own personal diary with excerpts from Grayson's writing and lots of space for your own reflections.

"I have tried to relate," explains Grayson, "the experiences of that elusive, invisible life which in every man is so far more real, so far more important, than his visible activities -- the real expression of a life much occupied in other employment." He is successful. In this, one of his most sensitive books, Grayson introduces us to his 'Woman of Forty-Five', his 'Green People', pragmatic old John Templeton, and the irascible James Howieson. Then there's Horace, "a Yankee of the Yankees, who loves nothing better than to chase his friends into corners with questions, and leave them ultimately with the impression that they are somehow less sound, sensible, practical, than he is -- and he usually proves it, not because he is right, but because he is sure...". This book is a symphony for the five senses, recognising the best in each of them.

Long before the gold rush, missionaries travelled to the west coast, built houses of worship and spread Christianity. Much of the state's culture and history stems from these structures, built as early as 1769 before the American Revolution!).
