BUTABU REMIX reimagines the architectural landscapes of West Africa through a contemporary lens that is both poetic and analytical. In this major new volume, British photographer James Morris presents over 200 reedited and remastered photographs—many previously unpublished—that reveal the expressive power and dignity of earthen architecture across Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Benin, and Togo. These buildings, sculpted from mud and sunlight, are not static relics but living testaments to ecological intelligence, community, and artistry.Edited by Lesley Lokko, founder of the African Futures Institute in Accra, the book pairs Morris’s luminous photography with newly commissioned texts, including several new voices in architectural writing from a young generation of African and diasporic thinkers. Their writings respond to Morris’s images with fresh critical insight, tracing how traditional knowledge and material practice speak urgently to today’s concerns—sustainability, identity, and belonging—while opening pathways toward new architectural and cultural futures.More than a photographic record, BUTABU REMIX is an inquiry into how built form becomes a vessel for memory and imagination. It celebrates the creativity of those who shape their environments from the most elemental materials, transforming earth into enduring works of art. Merging aesthetic excellence with the forward-looking reflections of both emerging and renowned voices, this volume offers an unparalleled view of Africa’s architectural heritage and its resonance within the global discourse on design and place. With contributions by David Adjaye, Francis Kéré, Ewa Effiom, Lois Innes, Nana Biamah-Ofosu, Izabela WieczorekAlso available in a French-language edition with the same title (ISBN 9783966800471)

Aga Khan Award for Architecture 2019The Aga Khan Award for Architecture is one of the most prestigious and renowned awards for architecture worldwide. Since 1980 the Award has been given every three years to projects that combine social and ecological aspects and translate them into innovative and exemplary design. The Award seeks to identify and encourage building concepts that successfully address the needs and aspirations of societies across the world, in which Muslims have a significant presence. This publication presents the shortlist of the 2017–2019 award cycle. From a group of almost 400, 20 projects have been shortlisted by the Master Jury and evaluated by an expert group of technical reviewers. Some of these projects have been honoured with the Aga Khan Award. In addition to detailed descriptions of all projects, this book gathers a series of personal statements from the members of the Steering Committee and the Award’s Master Jury on key issues that were crucial in the discussions for the final selection and assignment of the award recipients. Assembled together, this book presents a selection of the outstanding examples of sustainable and socially relevant architecture in the world today and opens up fundamental perspectives for the planning of the future.

The book embodies a bridge between the dimensions of music, architecture and landscape: the music of Arvo Pärt with the architecture of Fuensanta Nieto and Enrique Sobejano in the surrounding pine forest landscape in Laulasmaa, Estonia, to form one infused entity. This book is many books. The first takes the reader on a journey throughout the spaces within the Arvo Pärt Centre. The second is a book of words. It reveals quotations from Arvo Pärt’s musical diaries. The third book embraces us with score elements turning into architecture elements. The fourth book is an architecture sketchbook. It contains a graphical description of the whole project from an architectural view. Plans, sections, elevations, structural schemes of the landscape project, the main building, and the tower and the chapel show technical details and proportions of the spaces. Finally, the fifth book provides a deeper view on the synthesis of the arts through the words of five authors: Michael Pärt, Fuensanta Nieto & Enrique Sobejano, Kristina Kõrver, Nikita Andrejev and Covadonga Blasco Veganzones. It’s beautiful and minimalistic design, specially finished with the architectural drawings on integrated transparent paper, make this book a truly unique object both in terms of content and manufactured book production.

Selected research projects and architecture exploring the role of design within complex social, political and environmental conditionsToshiko Mori is a New York-based architect and Professor in the Practice of Architecture at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design for many years. As a long-time member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on the Future of Cities, Mori led research and inquiry into sustainable architecture, enhancing cities’ livability, and creating efficient urban services. Mori is also on the board of Dassault Systems, a company connecting technology to environment and life science. And she has founded the platform VisionArc, a think tank dedicated to exploring the role of design within complex social and environmental issues. This book will focus on TMA’s projects based on research, and the impact of socially valuable projects to society. The book will illustrate how the observation of the architect operates as opposed to how the imagination of the architect manifests itself. Different chapters in the book are describing various ways of approaching the task of observation. Seven chapters are divided into specific projects and provide a look at the hidden thought processes that can take place behind the ideas, solutions, and physical manifestations or architecture.Presented projects include the Portable Concert Hall, called Paracoustica, which is an ongoing nonprofit work to come up with an affordable and sharable concert hall among many constituents in remote and underserved community; the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research focusing on socialization among scientists as a new model of work that promotes further discovery and teamwork. And i.e. the research on the role of libraries in the future using the example of the Brooklyn Public Library Central Branch. Another chapter is dedicated to the vernacular typology development in Senegal with the Albers Foundation, and the research on social spaces for collaborative educational environments.

Working in Mumbai is a critical reflection on thirty years of the practice of RMA Architects. Rahul Mehrotra weaves a narrative to connect his multiple engagements in architectural practice, including teaching, research, documenting, writing and exhibiting since the establishment of the practice in 1990. The book is structured around the subjects of interior architecture, critical conservation, and work and living spaces that straddle the binaries of the global and the local as well as the rural and the urban. While the book is a portfolio of the selected works of RMA Architects, the projects are curated so as to unravel and clarify the challenges faced by architects in India and in several parts of the “majority” world where issues related to rapid urbanization and the impacts of global capital are among the many that dispute conventional models of practice. Working in Mumbai is used emblematically to interrogate the notion of context and understand how the practice evolved through its association with the city of Bombay/Mumbai.

Architecture of Coexistence: Building PluralismThis book investigates how architecture can shape an open-minded and inclusive society, highlighting three internationally renowned projects: the White Mosque in Visoko, Bosnia-Herzegovina (1980); the Islamic Cemetery Altach in Altach, Austria (2012); and the Superkilen public park in Copenhagen, Denmark (2012). Scholarly essays across various disciplines, along with interviews with the architects and users of these projects, provide intriguing insights into architecture’s ability to bridge cultural differences. Soliciting a wide array of questions about migration, transculturalism, visibility, inclusion, and exclusion, the book sheds light on the long-term social processes generated between architectural form and its users.Architecture of Coexistence offers a truly interdisciplinary perspective on a very timely subject: “Building pluralism” means designing for a respectful inclusion of different cultural needs, practices, and traditions. With contributions by Azra Akšamija, Mohammad al-Asad, Ali S. Asani, Simon Burtscher-Matis, Amila Buturović, Farrokh Derakhshani, Robert Fabach, Eva Grabherr, Amra Hadžimuhamedović, Tina Gudrun Jensen, Jennifer Mack, Nasser Rabbat, Barbara Steiner, Helen Walasek and Wolfgang Welsch.Photo essays by Velibor Božović, Cemal Emden, Jesper Lambaek, and Nikolaus Walter.

Constant change is what marks the history of the European city. Over centuries, architecture's reactions to social disruptions-natural disaster, plague, or war-have fashioned the city into an engine of civilization. And bound up with this has been the promise of economic independence, social cohesion, and individual freedom. Now fundamental challenges, such as climate change, are bringing cities face to face with new transformations that call into question the continuity and sustainability of the ethical foundations underpinning urban ways of life. Bold and decisive steps are needed. How far can urban planning, landscape planning, and architecture foster the vital processes of change? How can the city offset possible losses caused by altered lifestyles, integrate new technologies, or rehearse new forms of behaviour and ultimately sublimate them into a functioning culture? In this volume, the members of the Architecture Section of the Akademie der Kunste Berlin and their invited guests from all over Europe introduce their positions by means of projects, visions, and manifestos. Essays by selected authors with different viewpoints supplement the practical discourse.Published by Tim Rieniets, Matthias Sauerbruch, and Joern Walter on behalf of the Akademie der Kunste, Berlin. With a photoessay by Erik-Jan Ouwerkerk.

This poetic and minimalist anthology presents 10 years of heritage of AIRES MATEUSdesign studios at the Accademia di Archittettura di Mendrisio in Switzerland.100 images oflargescale models built by students of AIRES MATEUS are brought together to create afamily portrait. Each expertly staged model is pictured with the essential schemes necessaryto understand the volumes portrayed. Francisco and Manuel Aires Mateus’ many years ofexperience in pedagogy and the use of models in practice are brought together in a manifestowhich precedes the anthology of images. The importance of the model in the formation ofarchitectural ideas and throughout the design process, as well as its potency as a standalonestatement are highlighted. The evocative photographs in this book reveal abstract spacesproduced by artistic interpretations of light, volume and materiality.

This book presents Rahul Mehrotra's writings over the last thirty years and illustrates his long-term engagement with and analysis of urbanism in India. This work has given rise to a new conceptualization of the city. Mehrotra calls it the Kinetic City, which is the counterpoint to the Static City, as familiar to most of us from conventional city maps. He argues that the city should instead be perceived, read, and mapped in terms of patterns of occupation and associative values attributed to space. The framework is established in this publication by Rahul Mehrotra's anchor essay, which draws out its potential to "allow a better understanding of the blurred lines of contemporary urbanism and the changing roles of people and spaces in urban society." The emerging urban Indian condition, of which the Kinetic City is symbolic, is examined in this publication through a selection of writings curated by Mehrotra, which led to and then subsequently built on this framework. The theory is reinforced by different perspectives that Rahul Mehrotra brings to bear on discourse, and on the profession of architects and urban designers, thanks to his career as an architect, urban designer, conservationist, educator, and advocate for the city. From essays such as "Evolution, Involution and the City's Future: A Perspective on Bombay's Urban Form" to more generally applicable ruminations such as "Our Home in the World," this book offers an in-depth look at the last thirty years of reflection and theorizing behind Mehrotra's work. The publication is divided into three parts. The anchor essay, "Negotiating the Static and Kinetic Cities," and other contributions (twenty-one in total) make up the main section. A second book within the book is dedicated to an expansive complimentary photo essay by the photographer Rajesh Vora, illustrating the key themes transaction, instability, spectacle, and habitation. The last section presents an illustrated bibliography of Rahul Mehrotra's wide range of research and writings.

Of the around 20 biennials and triennials worldwide devoted to architecture, the Venice Architecture Biennale is the most prominent, considered as the world's leading biannual architecture festival. Their abstract architectural installations are the artistic manifestation of this work.Every installation will be introduced with a short essay, especially written for this publication by philosophers, architects, and an art critic. With contributions by Francisco and Manuel Aires Mateus, Ricardo Carvalho, Nuno Crespo, Sofia Pinto Basto, Paulo Pires do Vale, and Delfim Sardo.

Small stone hutongs, built within a courtyard-and-alley system, are emblematic of Beijing's traditional inner-city architecture which still contends with modern, cooperate redevelopments to shape the character of the city. In one of the oldest cities in China, the important tasks of preservation and revitalization require particular sensitivity. Captured at the centre of the battlefield between development, conservation and renovation, the hutongs, on the verge of erasure, call into question the paradoxical nature of these paradigms. The Micro Hutong Renewal series by ZAO/ standardarchitecture focusses on small structures which residents have added to hutong courtyards in the last 60 years. The anchor project of this publication is the Hutong Children's Library & Art Centre, which won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2016.A foreword from the Aga Khan Award director, Farrokh Derakhshani, and a series of photographs and drawings by the architect will present this project alongside another project from the series; The Micro Hutong and Co-living Courtyard, as well as ZAO/standardarchitecture's social housing projects in the center of Beijing. In addition, scholarly essays from across disciplines will explore alternative perspectives of China's historical cities and the challenges they face.Several interviews with different people involved with the Hutong projects, such as residents and users of different ages will ensure a broad range of perspectives. The holistic message of the book will illustrate how ZAO/standardarchitecture's work considers the city and its components as living organisms. This is what gives rise to the title: Hutong Metabolism.

Homelessness-the state of having no home-is a growing global problem that requires local discussions and solutions. In the face of the coronavirus pandemic, it has noticeably become a collective concern. However, in recent years, the official political discourse in many countries around the world implies that poverty is a personal fault, and that if people experience homelessness, it is because they have not tried hard enough to secure shelter and livelihood. Although architecture alone cannot solve the problem of homelessness, the question arises: What and which roles can it play? Or, to be more precise, how can architecture collaborate with other disciplines in developing ways to permanently house those who do not have a home? Who's Next? Homelessness, Architecture, and Cities seeks to explore and understand a reality that involves the expertise of national, regional, and city agencies, nongovernmental organizations, health-care fields, and academic disciplines. Through scholarly essays, interviews, analyses of architectural case studies, and research on the historical and current situation in Los Angeles, Moscow, Mumbai, New York, Sao Paulo, San Francisco, Shanghai, and Tokyo, this book unfolds different entry points toward understanding homelessness and some of the many related problems. The book is a polyphonic attempt to break down this topic into as many parts as needed, so that the specificities and complexities of one of the most urgent crises of our time rise to the fore.

The Manual for Designing Urban Imaginaries: Colombia aims to confront one of humanity’s most pressing challenges: the complexities of transformation in an urban age.Situated at the nexus of urban research, design, and activism, the volume focuses on Colombia’s rapidly urbanizing areas, where decades of armed conflict and forced displacement from neighbouring Venezuela have given way to new waves of social and environmental issues. In such a challenging sociopolitical context, this manual—emerging from research at the ETH Zurich under the frame of the Colombia Urban Transformation Program—explores the spaces where architectural practice and design thinking meet the hopes, needs, and perceptions of communities. The concept of the “urban imaginary”—denoting the desires of the collective—is evoked as a means of developing strategies for marginalized voices, so as to shape the future of their built and natural environments. The manual demonstrates that true transformation is possible when alliances are forged, when diverse actors meet at a common table to negotiate, deliberate, and build solutions together. For anyone navigating the complexity of an urbanizing Earth, the Manual for Designing Urban Imaginaries: Colombia is a call to action. It reminds us that every street corner and urban periphery holds the potential to inspire transformation, and that reimagining urban life is not just an architectural endeavour—it is a deeply human one. Though grounded in Colombia, the manual’s lessons extend to global areas grappling with displacement, inequality and rapid urbanization. Ultimately, this book is about embracing the most expansive and generative territory of urbanization: the human imagination.

Since the firm's founding twenty-five years ago, AKT II have forged an international practice that unifies the cultures and disciplines of architecture and structural engineering. This book is an engine for critical reflection on the scope, potential, and limits of what they have come to define as design engineering. Structured into five discursive domains—scale, variability, attitude, reverse engineering and the craftsmanship of engineering—the book presents a robust selection of the firm's endeavours. Common among them is a desire to understand and reshape the boundaries of the discipline of structural engineering, along with its links to fields such as philosophy, computer science and geography. Interlaced with the projects, texts by contributors from varying fields engage the theoretical discussions and social conditions that bind contemporary practice. Matters of Engineering Design: AKT II balances structural concerns that require an equilibrium of internal and external forces, a clear understanding of boundary conditions, and knowledge of the properties of material with the overarching challenges that society faces today, including advances in technology, changing economic orders, and ecological responsibility. With contributions by William Baker, David Basulto, Hanif Kara, Jayne Kelley, Priya Khanchandani, Adrian Lahoud, Lesley Lokko, Ibrahim Mahama, Stephen Parnell, Vicky Richardson, and Ellis Woodman.

Today, humanity as a whole is facing epochalchallenges that require a radical metamorphosis of inhabited spaces. Cities Under Pressure illustrates a newdesign paradigm, an open intervention system that seeks the establishment of adynamic equilibrium that is continuously renegotiated. Cities Under Pressure imagines and defines new urban environmentsthat abandon a rigid design scheme in favor of growing evolutionary mechanismscapable of embodying the ongoing sustainable transition, so as to guarantee aresilient and peaceful future.

Building to Heal: New Architecture for Hospitals examines the hardships and major challenges faced by the hospital system today and presents innovative models and solutions in healthcare architecture. Through critical, scientifically based discourse, a variety of authors examine healthcare systems and hospital architecture, what hospitals are missing, and how architecture can contribute to the healing process of patients. The publication answers these questions in three comprehensive chapters based on the medical process: "Symptoms," "Diagnosis," and "Therapy." The introductory section describes the symptoms of the "sick house" and spotlights the urgent need to take these problems seriously in the contexts of both society as a whole and architecture. In the second section, experts from psychology, medicine, and the related sciences, as well as from architectural theory and philosophy, take a diagnostic look at the complex causes that lead to the "diseased house." The third section presents seven "active ingredients" or scientifically investigated environmental variables for successful therapy, incorporating tools from evidence-based design. Finally, thirteen international case studies show how the conscious use of environmental variables leads to a hospital architecture that promotes healing. Building to Heal: New Architecture for Hospitals bridges the gap between the ever-growing expertise on healthcare architecture and the urgent need for planners, politicians, and the public to pay attention to one of the most important issues in architecture today: health.

Architecture of Commonality. Grounds for Hope is an edited collection of essays expounding on the role of museums and cultural institutions in Palestine and the Arab world. The book is guided by reflections on the Palestinian Museum in Birzeit, Palestine, which won the 2019 Aga Khan Award for Architecture. The long history of the genesis of the Museum as an institution is the framing device for a multiplicity of voices to reflect on the role architecture plays in the orchestration of memorialization, on the significance of curatorial strategies that respond to situations of conflict, and a discussion of the blurred boundaries between architecture, landscape and land art.As a way to reflect on the deep ties the Museum and the gardens hold with the ground and the landscape, the collection of essays by scholars across cultures, and interviews with designers, is structured around four main themes, Stones, Seeds, Voices and Walks. The intention is to expand beyond the confines of the singular project in order to invite reflections on the positive role cultural institutions play in planting hope for the future and locating the conversations within the political and historical framework of the region.

Saudi Modern: Jeddah in Transition, 1938-1964, edited by Abdulrahman and Turki Gazzaz of Bricklab, explores the urban and architectural transformation of the city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, since the discovery of oil-highlighting the city's rapid modernization and societal change. Over the last ninety years, Jeddah has transitioned from a modest walled city and pilgrimage hub into a sprawling modern metropolis. The complex urban morphology that characterizes it today can be credited to the port city's role in the Saudi Arabian oil industry that arose after the discovery of natural oil reservoirs in 1938. The industry brought foreign companies and institutions, as well as workers and their families, from around the world. The city grew beyond its old walls. Moreover, interactions with modern technologies and development models launched a radical infrastructural and architectural reconfiguration of the urban fabric. As a reaction to this dramatic shift, the language of the vernacular has become fetishized. Modernist developments post-1938 are today commonly considered inauthentic, and many of the buildings, streets, and neighborhoods that bear witness to the evolution of the city right after the discovery of oil have been demolished without formal archival documentation. In their place, new megaprojects have sprung up. Driven by global capital, Jeddah, along with other cities across the Persian Gulf, has entered yet a new phase of sweeping urban transformation. Highlighting fifteen case studies, the book further combines scholarly essays with visual contributions, presenting unparalleled documentary research and historical contextualization of the city's disappearing modernist heritage. With contributions by Asaad Badawi, Lina Barnawi, Bricklab, Abdulrahman Gazzaz, Turki Gazzaz, Laurian Ghini?oiu, Stefan Maneval, Safouh Naamani, Todd Reisz, Anhar Salem, Saudi Ethnographic Diary, Sumayya Vally, and excerpts from historical research by Abdulla Yahia Bokhari and Sameer Al Layali.

Beyond Ruins: Reimagining Modernism explores the potential of modern architecture renovation in the Global South as a catalyst for self-determination and community-building. The volume presents case studies, conversations, and visual essays by international experts in architecture, governance, regenerative design, contemporary art, philosophy, and gaming. These contributions examine recent heritage renovation as a scaffold for local coauthorship of the built environment, and as a way of coming to terms with the region’s postcolonial nation-building projects of the mid-twentieth century. The starting point for the book’s contributions is the Oscar Niemeyer Guest House renovation project in Tripoli, Lebanon, by the Beirut-based East Architecture Studio—a recipient of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture. The main focus here was to uncover the history of the site and to foreground the political climates of such postcolonial nation-building projects. The publication addresses contemporary heritage challenges, questions renovation trends, and reveals gaps in historicization and archiving. It reflects on the need for new architectural operations due to a lack of infrastructure and emphasizes the materiality of renovation projects, encouraging discussions on craft, manufacturing, growth, aging, and hybridity. The book presents architecture as a process of mutual translation—listening to, interacting with, and supporting cultural practices. It offers a platform for critique and possibility, while considering preservation as an imaginative futurist practice.Edited by Raafat Majzoub and Nicolas Fayad, with contributions by Amale Andraos, Elias and Yousef Anastas, George Arbid, Aaron Betsky, Sibel Bozdogan, Costica Bradatan, Aziza Chaouni, Marco Costantini, Civil Architecture, Farrokh Derakhshani, EAST Architecture Studio, Fadi El Abdallah, Farès el-Dahdah, Nicolas Fayad, Sarah Mineko Ichioka, Charles Kettaneh, Bernard Khoury, Raafat Majzoub, Noura Al Sayeh Holtrop, Sumayya Vally, Ana Tostões, Nader Tehrani, Jozef Wouters, and Akram Zaatari.

Learning Ecologies in Architecture explores how exemplary educational buildings actively shape, and are shaped by, their ecological contexts through processes of translation, research, innovation, and collaboration. These ecologies are not only environmental but encompass dynamic interactions between people, organisations, and material resources, to bring educational spaces into being. Good educational design has always extended beyond the boundaries of the building, fostering and addressing the individual learners in the classroom as well as the community and contexts that nurture them. The book is guided by two Senegalese projects that won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture (in 2019 and 2022 respectively): the Alioune Diop University Teaching and Research Unit designed by IDOM and the Kamanar Secondary School by Dawoffice. These projects exemplify architecture both as a process of civic engagement, where architects purposefully involve communities, and as an environmentally conscious and responsive endeavour, applying sustainability principles and process in resource-constrained contexts. By delving into these case studies, the book interrogates the legacy and philosophy of educational design, the critical debates and practices in relation to participatory architecture, and the intricacies of representation and materiality. The first section of the book examines the historical legacies and contexts of educational architecture, with an emphasis on Africa. It traces how the design and construction of university institutions have played a pivotal role in postcolonial nation-building and identity. This historic perspective provides a foundation for analysing contemporary efforts to further meaningful civic engagement in educational design. Several contributors critically assess the successes and limitations of civic engagement in architecture, exploring the work needed to ensure that translation, participation, and collaboration lead to meaningful change. With contributions by Jonathan Kplorla Agbeh, Christian Paul “Zigato” Agboada, Christian Benimana, Dawoffice, Katherine Dawson, Farrokh Derakhshani, Souleymane Bachir Diagne, Christian Hedrick, Anna Heringer, IDOM, Farhan Karim, Timothy Latim, Lesley Lokko, Tubi Otitooluwa, Deen Sharp, Mamadou Jean-Charles Tall, Justicia Tegyeka and Ola Uduku.

This book investigates the hidden physical infrastructures behind the digital world. Data may appear immaterial, but it relies on extensive global networks: the extraction of raw materials, the deployment of thousands of undersea cables, and an exponentially growing number of energy-intensive data centres. While these data infrastructures shape global economies and politics, they truly do far more by profoundly impacting local communities, ecosystems, and labour conditions—realms so often rooted in (neo)colonial structures of exploitation. The contributions in this volume call for greater transparency, critical awareness, and care toward the material foundations of the data economy—as essential conditions for more equitable and accountable digital futures.Bringing together voices from architecture, media studies, technology, art, and political theory, City in the Cloud – Data on the Ground explores the elemental, spatial, and temporal dimensions of the architecture of data. The volume maps the costs of the data economy—ecological, social, and political—and opens up perspectives for rethinking digital infrastructures in the context of planetary resources, justice, and long-term responsibility.

The volume Optimism and Architecture presents the awarded and shortlisted projects for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture 2025. The book explores the ways in which optimism and hope are linked to better design outcomes, highlighting architecture's capacity to serve as a catalyst for pluralism, social transformation, cultural dialogue, and climate-responsive design.Unpublished material offers deep insights into the broad social, political, and cultural contexts that shape our built environments. The publication sheds light on the extensive jury and in-depth review processes for which the Award is renowned. Through essays and conversations, this volume examines how architecture can reinvigorate tradition through thoughtful innovation, connect local practices with global conversations, touch the earth lightly yet profoundly, and create inclusive spaces where diverse cultures and histories converge. Architecture is considered not only as a physical structure but also as a cultural practice that shapes public life, sparks social engagement, and reimagines heritage and identity in a rapidly changing world. This publication provides an optimistic and vivid portrait of contemporary architecture's role in fostering more inclusive and interconnected futures.
