Cahiers d'art – förlag

Pairing a selection of recent watercolours from 2011 and 2012 by Thomas Schutte with a selection of previously unpublished poems by Robert Walser, written between 1924 and 1933, this book is a deeply personal exploration of our everyday selves, choreographed by one of the greatest living artists. This book is dedicated by the artist to the gallerist Donald Young, who invited the artist to participate in an exhibition dedicated to Walser in Chicago in 2012. Published in original German with new English translations of each poem and with an introduction by Dr. Reto Sorg, director of the Robert Walser Archives.

Given unprecedented access to Calder’s work and life during the course of their friendship, acclaimed photographer and graphic designer Herbert Matter captured Calder’s sculptures, the artist at work in his studio and at home with his family in Roxbury, Connecticut. Calder by Matter includes original essays by esteemed art critic and Calder biographer Jed Perl, Calder Foundation President and Calder grandson Alexander S. C. Rower (editor of the volume), and Matter student and colleague John T. Hill (designer of the volume). This unique collection of over 300 images, many of which are published here for the first time, offers a new perspective on Calder’s oeuvre, life, and creative process. Calder by Matter has been published in direct collaboration with the Calder Foundation.

“Cahiers d’Art” refers at once to a publishing house, a gallery, and to a revue founded in 1926 by Christian Zervos at 14 rue du Dragon in the heart of Saint-Germain des-Prés. Cahiers d’Art was entirely unique: a journal of contemporary art defined by its combination of striking typography and layout, abundant photography, and juxtaposition of ancient and modern art, including original works by Picasso, Miró, Giacometti, Duchamp, and Man Ray, where writers like Paul Éluard, Ernest Hemingway, and Samuel Beckett often replaced the usual art critics. This is the first issue of the Cahiers d’art revue to be published since 1960. The first issue contains an extensive article of 70 pages dedicated to a defining artist of our time, Ellsworth Kelly; texts from renowned architects, art historians, and critics; as well as portfolios of previously unpublished material by Cyprien Gaillard, Sarah Morris, and Adrián Villar Rojas.

The latest issue of the Cahiers d’Art revue is devoted to Pablo Picasso and the various techniques he employed, offering an exceptional, intimate look at the artist in his studio. Through rare and previously unpublished photographs by such photographers as Edward Quinn, Lucien Clergue, Lee Miller, and David Douglas Duncan, this issue of the renowned arts publication provides a captivating perspective on the concept of the artist at work. Through this rich and detailed exploration of the artist’s practice and environments, the issue also sheds new light on the creative process as a whole. The revue is comprised of seven chapters, each devoted to a particular technique demonstrated in the photographs, alongside texts by noted historians such as Elizabeth Cowling, Cécile Godefroy, Ann Hindry, Brigitte Leal, Marilyn McCully, and Vérane Tasseau. Each chapter is followed by an interview with a contemporary artist, including Miquel Barceló, George Condo, Sheila Hicks, William Kentridge, Jeff Koons, Robert Longo, and Tatiana Trouvé. They have been invited to comment on the technique under discussion, in Picasso’s work and in their own, as well as on their connection to the artist. The revue also highlights Picasso’s relationship with former Cahiers d’Art publisher Christian Zervos through the reproduction of key articles on Picasso published during the artist’s lifetime.
