From alt-rock bassist Melissa Auf der Maur—of Hole and Smashing Pumpkins fame—comes a photographic love letter to the last analog decadePublished with Art Gallery of Ontario. As the bass player for the iconic ’90s alternative rock bands Hole and Smashing Pumpkins, Melissa Auf der Maur toured the world, documenting life backstage, onstage and in the crowd. She instinctively turned the camera on herself as the most intimately available subject, as informed by her studies at Concordia University where her professor, Raymonde April, introduced her to the subjective self-portraits of Francesca Woodman. By the time she joined Hole for their Live Through This world tour, she requested a roll of 35mm film backstage at every venue. Her daily practice, continually documenting herself and her surroundings, expanded through her creative uses of self-timers and cable releases to take snapshots in the middle of performances. This dedication resulted in an extensive archive of over 10,000 photographs that go behind the scenes of rock-and-roll stardom—hanging out with Pavement, Sonic Youth and Beck; riding in the back of a limousine with Drew Barrymore; and idling time on the set of the music video for Hole's song “Celebrity Skin.” She was even commissioned by magazines such as Spin to document Lollapalooza 1995 and the Tibetan Freedom Concert of 1996. Gritty and edgy, playful yet deeply personal, Auf der Maur's intimate photographs celebrate the independent spirit of the ’90s and offer an insider's view of the decade before smartphones and digital recording software. Through an extensive curatorial selection of more than 200 photographs, her memories create a moving self-portrait of a young artist living through the ’90s alternative music scene, and a time capsule for Generation X.Melissa Auf der Maur’s (born 1972) indie band Tinker had just opened for Smashing Pumpkins when Billy Corgan recommended her to Courtney Love as the new bassist for Hole’s grief-marked Live Through This world tour, beginning soon after the deaths of both Kurt Cobain and Kristen Pfaff. She played on the group's Grammy-nominated album Celebrity Skin. After leaving Hole, Auf der Maur joined Smashing Pumpkins as the bassist for their farewell tour from 1999 to 2000. Following the release of a few solo albums, she moved to Hudson, NY, became a mother and cofounded the multidisciplinary art center Basilica Hudson.

Published with Fraenkel Gallery.Enduring icons of American culture, the car and the highway remain vital as auguries of adventure and discovery, and a means by which to take in the country's vast scale. Lee Friedlander is the first photographer to make the car an actual "form" for making photographs. Driving across most of the country's 50 states in an ordinary rental car, Friedlander applied the brilliantly simple conceit of deploying the sideview mirror, rearview mirror, the windshield and the side windows as a picture frame within which to record the country's eccentricities and obsessions at the turn of the century. This method allows for fascinating effects in foreshortening, and wonderfully telling juxtapositions in which steering wheels, dashboards and leatherette bump up against roadside bars, motels, churches, monuments, suspension bridges, landscapes and often Friedlander's own image, via sideview mirror shots. Presented in the square crop format that has dominated his look in recent series, and taken over the past decade, the nearly 200 images in America by Car are easily among Friedlander's finest, full of virtuoso touch and clarity, while also revisiting themes from older bodies of work (Friedlander occasionally used aspects of automotive architecture in photographs from the late 1960s and early 1970s). Never has America been photographed so penetratingly and ingeniously as in Friedlander's latest body of work. This edition of America by Car is limited to 1000 copies and is signed by Friedlander.

Can crochet explain the complexities of non-Euclidean geometry? How does the 1804 Jacquard loom relate to modern computing? Radical Fiber celebrates the overlap between art, science, interdisciplinary creativity and collaborative learningPublished with Tang Museum. For centuries, fiber arts have influenced sciences as diverse as digital technology, mathematics, neuroscience, medicine and more. Radical Fiber explores this relationship through contemporary art and historical artifacts that address five key themes: shape, machine, body, brain and community. How did the accidental discovery of synthetic mauveine dye in 1856 pave the way for modern pharmaceuticals while also generating toxic waste? Why do we respond differently to a woven photograph than a printed one? These and other questions reframe the fiber/science intersection and ask how the medium can be used to improve our world for the future.Radical Fiber features a new artwork created by amateur and professional makers around the globe: the Saratoga Springs Satellite Reef, part of the Crochet Coral Reef project by Christine and Margaret Wertheim and the Institute For Figuring. Alongside numerous unidentified artists, additional artists and creators include: Lia Cook, Brock Craft, Veronica Dry, Anna Dumitriu, Ellis Developments, Hanne Kekkonen, Kintra Fibers, Elaine Krajenke Ellison, Karen Norberg, William Henry Perkin, Helen Remick, Dario Robleto, Daniela Rosner, Samantha Shorey, John Sims, Soft Monitor (Victoria Manganiello and Julian Goldman), Daina Taimina, Cecilia Vicun?a and Carolyn Yackel.

Presenting recently rediscovered drawings, Life and Death explores what it means for an artist to picture their own death, in both the context of Wyeth’s late career and contemporary American artPublished with Colby College Museum of Art.This volume presents for the first time a recently rediscovered series of pencil drawings from the early 1990s, through which Wyeth imagined his own funeral. Chapters by leading art historians explore the significance of picturing one’s own death in both the context of Wyeth’s late career and contemporary American art. The book connects the funeral series to Wyeth’s decades-long engagement with death as an artistic subject in painting, his relationships with the models depicted, and his use of drawing as an expressive and exploratory medium. It further inserts Wyeth’s work into a larger conversation about mortality and self-portraiture that developed in American art since the 1960s, and includes works by Duane Michals, Andy Warhol, David Wojnarowicz, George Tooker, Janaina Tschäpe and Mario Moore. While his contemporaries posed a variety of existential questions in picturing their own passing, those that interrogate the universality of death as a human experience have become especially urgent in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic and the national reckoning with racial inequality that emerged in 2020. Andrew Wyeth: Life and Death thus addresses ideas about loss, grief, vulnerability and (im)mortality that pervade the current moment.American painter Andrew Wyeth (1917–2009) lived his entire life in his birthplace of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, and his summer home in mid-coast Maine. His seven-decade career was spent painting the land and people that he knew and cared about. Renowned for his tempera painting Christina's World (1948), Wyeth navigated between artistic representation and abstraction in a highly personal way.

The first monograph on the powerful painting of Janiva Ellis, exploring abstraction, figuration, race and social accelerationPublished with Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami. This volume introduces the work of American painter Janiva Ellis, who participated in the New Museum Triennial 2018 and the Whitney Biennial 2019. Featuring a suite of new paintings created over the past year, Rats is published on the occasion of the first solo museum exhibition for Ellis, whose paintings use formal themes of speed and transformation to explore fractured states of personal and cultural perception. Her works produce abundant imagery, invented as well as appropriated. She draws from a broad array of material, including art history and pop culture, to comment on the insidious nature of white supremacist mythology and its denial of itself as a brutal social and structural force. The humor in her work aims to create space for release as well as renewal. Ellis uses figuration to paint Blackness expansively, communicating the complexity of navigating such a lopsided and violent landscape.

A visual chronology of modern Chinese fashion—from the fall of the Qing dynasty to the Cultural Revolution—as seen through 70 rare ensemblesPublished with Los Angeles County Museum of Art.This sumptuous publication showcases Chinese women's high fashion designs from the late Qing dynasty at the turn of the 20th century through the 1960s, examining how women's dress evolved amid seismic shifts in Chinese society. With more than 120 images, it traces transformations in silhouette, tailoring and textile innovation, revealing the ways Chinese fashion responded to globalization, modernization and women's changing roles. A special point of interest throughout the book is the qipao, the form-fitting, often ornately designed gown that is an iconic signifier of modern Chinese femininity. The volume charts its emergence in the 1920s and its adaptation across the diaspora from the 1940s to the 1960s.New York–based Taiwanese Canadian fashion designer Jason Wu developed special 3D-printed mannequins (with nine different historically inspired hairstyles) to sport many of the ensembles, bringing to life fashionable women's body types across seven decades. Wu also pens the book's preface. Two essays by design historians and curators, Mei Mei Rado and Michaela Hansen, offer original research and nuanced analyses of modern Chinese fashion design. Rado investigates fashion's interplay with rapid historical and cultural changes in China, while Hansen analyzes how industrial and technological advances reshaped Chinese textile design. Interspersed throughout the volume are archival images including book illustrations, textile prints, magazine covers and calendar posters. Altogether, Fashioning Chinese Women offers an in-depth visual chronology of a dynamic chapter in Chinese fashion history that has been largely overlooked by Western art museums and publishers.

A landmark publication featuring 60 career-spanning photographs by Ellsworth Kelly, one of the most revered artists of the past 100 yearsPublished with Santa Barbara Museum of Art.Marking the first museum exhibition devoted solely to the photographs of Ellsworth Kelly, this beautifully designed volume features each photograph in the Santa Barbara Museum of Art’s illuminating presentation of this lesser-known aspect of Kelly’s art. From the late 1940s on, Kelly created an era-defining body of abstract art based on many kinds of visual phenomena he perceived around him. Largely made for himself, Kelly’s photographs record these discoveries in tightly-composed images of nature and architecture that often reverberate with striking sunlight and shadow.Similar as they may appear, Kelly did not base his paintings, sculpture and works on paper on his photographs. The camera for Kelly was yet one more artistic tool he used to brilliantly transcribe his lived surroundings into an art that, however abstract, always resonated with his subjective experiences of actual, everyday worlds.Kelly’s rich sensory fascination with such worlds, from shadows on a beachside staircase to the curve of a snowy hillside, courses throughout this handsome book. To those familiar with or new to the artist, these photographs offer a vividly direct chance to see Ellsworth Kelly’s eye and mind at work unlike any other genre in which this groundbreaking artist ever worked.Born in Newburgh, New York, Ellsworth Kelly (1923–2015) served in France in World War II’s Ghost Army, graduated from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston and returned to France from 1948–54. Over the next seven decades, back in New York City and then upstate, Kelly produced an uncompromising body of art that set new standards for the possibilities of abstract art in the 20th century. His work has been the subject of numerous retrospectives the world over and is represented in virtually every major national and international museum.

The only comprehensive volume on James Turrell is back in print—from early prints and light projections to his monumental Roden Crater projectPublished with Los Angeles County Museum of Art.This definitive book illuminates the origins and motivations of James Turrell’s incredibly diverse and exciting body of work—from his Mendota studio days to his monumental work-in-progress Roden Crater. Whether projecting shapes on a flat wall or into the corner of a gallery space, Turrell is perpetually asking us to "go inside and greet the light"—evoking his Quaker upbringing. In fact, all of Turrell’s work has been influenced by his life experiences with aviation, science and psychology, and as a key player in Los Angeles’ exploding art scene of the 1960s. Enhanced by thoughtful essays and an illuminating interview with the artist, this monograph explores every aspect of Turrell’s career—from his early geometric light projections, prints and drawings, through his installations exploring sensory deprivation and seemingly unmodulated fields of colored light, to two-dimensional experiments with holograms. It also features an in-depth look at Roden Crater, a site-specific intervention into the landscape near Flagstaff, Arizona, which is presented through models, plans, photographs and drawings. Fans of this highly influential artist will find much to savor in this wide-ranging and beautiful book, featuring specially commissioned photography by Florian Holzherr. As an undergraduate, James Turrell (born 1943) studied psychology and mathematics, transitioning to art only at MFA level. The recipient of several prestigious awards, including Guggenheim and MacArthur fellowships, Turrell lives in Arizona.

Known for her “shack” sculptures and land installations across her native Georgia, Buchanan embraces Southern vernacular architecture as emblematic of Black American historyPublished with Andrew Edlin Gallery. At the heart of Beverly Buchanan’s (born 1940) work is a belief in transformation. Her art speaks to cycles of collapse and rebirth—of buildings, of landscapes, of lives. Ruination and Regeneration examines Buchanan’s major bodies of work, including her abstract paintings of 1970s New York, her cast-concrete “frustula,” her site-specific installations such as Marsh Ruins and her acclaimed “shack” sculptures—tributes to the handmade homes of Black tenant farmers in the rural South. Featuring essays, interviews, poems, archival materials and Buchanan’s own writings, this volume offers a rich and multifaceted reflection of her deeply personal and politically charged oeuvre. Ruination and Regeneration not only honors Buchanan’s legacy but also reframes how we see memory, place and the power of making art from what remains.

Three decades of the beloved Japanese artist’s paintings, drawings, sculptures and morePublished with Los Angeles County Museum of Art.Yoshitomo Nara is among the most beloved Japanese artists of his generation. His widely recognizable portraits of menacing figures reflect the artist’s raw encounters with his inner self. Nara’s oeuvre takes inspiration from a wide range of resources—memories of his childhood, music, literature, studying and living in Germany (1988–2000), exploring his roots in Japan, Sakhalin and Asia, and modern art from Europe and Japan.Spanning 35 years (1985 to 2020), this book—which accompanies the major career retrospective organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art—presents the full range of Nara’s work. It also examines the artist’s work through the lens of his longtime passion—music—and features “liner notes” written by the artist about various albums in his personal collection of 1960s and 70s folk and rock albums, published in English for the first time. The book features paintings, drawings, sculpture, ceramic figures, an installation that re-creates his drawing studio, and never-before-exhibited idea sketches that reflect the artist’s empathic eye, shining a light on Nara’s conceptual process. Readers will see the evolution of a dynamic artist who has become more contemplative with age.Yoshitomo Nara was born in 1959 in Aomori, Japan, and graduated with a master's degree from Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music and later studied at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. In the fall of 2010, the Asia Society in New York presented the first major New York exhibition of his work. He is represented by Pace Gallery and Blum & Poe.

René Magritte (1898–1967) was one of the most intriguing painters associated with Surrealism, but he did not fully find his voice until after breaking ties with the movement. This book, the first to look exclusively at Magritte’s late career, examines his most important bodies of work from the 1940s through the 1960s, and shows how they marked a fundamental shift in painting from Modernism to our own time.Featuring more than sixty artworks, René Magritte: The Fifth Season explores how Magritte balanced irony and conviction, philosophy and fantasy, to illuminate the gaps between what we see and what we know. Subjects explored in this volume include the artist’s Renoir period; the période vache, with its Fauvist- and Expressionist-style paintings that are little known to American audiences; the ‘hypertrophy of objects’ paintings, a series that plays with the scale of familiar objects; and the enigmatic Dominion of Light suite, paintings that suggest the simultaneous experience of day and night. Together, the works reveal Magritte as an artist acutely attuned to the paradoxes at work within reality, and an enduring champion of the role of mystery in life and art.

Meditating on the legacies of racial injustice in America: a photographic reimagining of Emmett Till’s life had it not been cut shortPublished with Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College Chicago. This book honors the life, death and legacy of Emmett Till through a kaleidoscope of 20th- and 21st-century photography. Both a reckoning with the past and a probing investigation into the current state of American life, If Emmett Till Lived presents a fictionalized narrative of the life Emmett Till might have lived had he returned home in 1955, rather than being murdered at the age of 14 while visiting family in Mississippi, a victim of the racial terror of Jim Crow rule. Curated by writer and scholar Sarah Lewis, the more than 100 photographs from dozens of artists are drawn from the permanent collection of the Museum of Contemporary Photography. Her selection of works recalls small but not insignificant moments in Till’s childhood as well as larger themes from his life’s unfulfilled promise. Collectively, Lewis’ selections present a poetic and profound photographic account of quotidian moments from a childhood and adulthood unrealized. These photographs speak to the absence of images of Till’s life beyond the age of 14. In filling that void, the exhibition more broadly addresses the lasting impact of racialized violence in the United States across generations, ultimately offering a framework for considering how freedom is secured on American ground.Photographers include: Dawoud Bey, Keith Carter, Teju Cole, Bruce Davidson, An-My Lê, Danny Lyon, Sally Mann, Diana Matar, Gordon Parks, Walter Rosenblum, Carrie Mae Weems.

Drawing on pop-culture archetypes and commercial materials, Da Corte’s foam, shampoo and glass paintings receive their first dedicated museum survey and publicationPublished with Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.Merging modernist color theory and Postminimalist spatial experiments with the crowded, beautiful trash-scape of contemporary culture, Alex Da Corte (born 1980) addresses sexuality, invisible labor, taste, power and desire. While most previous showcases have focused on Da Corte’s installations, The Whale is the first exhibition to survey his rich and eccentric relationship with painting over the past decade. As is to be expected with his irreverent approach, Da Corte paints with both traditional and unconventional materials. His Shampoo Paintings are created with drugstore hair products, while his Puffy Paintings consist of upholstered neoprene. Other works include his reverse paintings on glass, most commonly used in celluloid animation and commercial sign-making. Many of these paintings are published in book form for the first time, accompanied by Da Corte’s "Voice Memos" that elucidate his creative process.

The concrete poetry collection of the legendary Bay Area book dealer and collector Steven Leiber—with rare gems from the De Campos brothers, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Bob Cobbing and moreMAMCO has devoted a semipermanent exhibition space to concrete poetry since 2016, resulting in the acquisition of a significant group of works falling under this label. This includes the purchase of the Steven Leiber collection. The collection features important figures such as Ian Hamilton Finlay, Augusto and Haroldo de Campos, Dom Sylvester Houédard, John Furnival, Maurizio Nannucci, Franz Mon, Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt, Natalie Czech, Julien Blaine, Jean-François Bory, Pierre and Isle Garnier, Bob Cobbing and Richard Kostelanetz.

An artist's book exploring the language of protestA new artist's book by Adam Pendleton (born 1984), As Heavy as Sculpture follows Pendleton's 2021 installation of the same title, exhibited at the New Museum in New York. The book collects, repeats and processes over 80 source collages, incorporating drawings, sketches, writing and marks, often in combination with images.Much of the language in the collages is drawn from the protests against police brutality that swept the US in 2020: Pendleton has transcribed slogans sprayed on walls and windows, combining them with his own improvised language as well as photographs of art objects and artifacts (sculptures, masks and figures). The work points to the poetic pressure that uprisings place on language itself, compressing it in some cases into the barest of forms: simple sequences like "ACAB" or "1312," further reducible to the elements "A, B, C," "1, 2, 3."In parallel with these operations of decomposition and recomposition, the collages in As Heavy as Sculpture have been duplicated, laid out across 30 sheets and folded into book signatures, creating new displacements and cuts. This folding is in effect a chance operation, a procedure of recombination and translation, resulting in arrangements of images not planned out in advance.

Four decades of impassioned art-activism from the beloved radical Catholic nun, educator and graphic artist—her definitive monograph available once morePublished with Tang Museum at Skidmore College. For Corita Kent, printmaking was a populist medium to communicate with the world around her. This activist spirit came most alive in the 1960s, when her posters and murals addressed subjects such as racism and poverty, US military brutalities in Vietnam and conflicts between radical and conservative positions in the Catholic Church. Her posters, murals and signature serigraphs combined messages of love and faith with images from popular culture and inventive use of type and color.Originally published in 2013 and long out of print, the most comprehensive monograph on Kent's work finally returns in a brilliant showcase of prints and ephemera from all phases of her life, revealing her importance as an activist printmaker and a stylistic innovator in graphic design. It includes not just the 1960s serigraphs for which she is best known, but also early abstractions and text pieces as well as lyrical works made in the 1970s and 1980s. Full of the lively, colorful work that is so iconically hers, this volume presents four decades of a life dedicated to serving others through and with the language of art. Someday is Now is punctuated by scholarship, selected writings by Kent herself, interviews with former students and collaborators, and responses to her work from a wide variety of artists, curators and designers.Artist, activist, teacher and devout Catholic Corita Kent (1918–86) eloquently combined her passions for faith and politics during her rich and varied career. As a teacher at Los Angeles' Immaculate Heart College, she fostered a creative and collaborative arts community and developed an interest in printmaking. By 1968, her art was enormously popular. She remained active in social causes until her death in 1986.

A colossal, panoramic, much-needed appraisal of the visual cultures of Afro-Atlantic territories across six centuriesPublished with Museu de Arte de São Paulo.Named one of the best books of 2021 by ArtforumAfro-Atlantic Histories brings together a selection of more than 400 works and documents by more than 200 artists from the 16th to the 21st centuries that express and analyze the ebbs and flows between Africa, the Americas, the Caribbean and Europe. The book is motivated by the desire and need to draw parallels, frictions and dialogues around the visual cultures of Afro-Atlantic territories—their experiences, creations, worshiping and philosophy. The so-called Black Atlantic, to use the term coined by Paul Gilroy, is geography lacking precise borders, a fluid field where African experiences invade and occupy other nations, territories and cultures. The plural and polyphonic quality of “histórias” is also of note; unlike the English “histories,” the word in Portuguese carries a double meaning that encompasses both fiction and nonfiction, personal, political, economic and cultural, as well as mythological narratives. The book features more than 400 works from Africa, the Americas and the Caribbean, as well as Europe, from the 16th to the 21st century. These are organized in eight thematic groupings: Maps and Margins; Emancipations; Everyday Lives; Rites and Rhythms; Routes and Trances; Portraits; Afro Atlantic Modernisms; Resistances and Activism.Artists include: Nina Chanel Abney, Emma Amos, Benny Andrews, Emanoel Araujo, Maria Auxiliadora, Romare Bearden, John Biggers, Paul Cézanne, Victoria Santa Cruz, Beauford Delaney, Aaron Douglas, Melvin Edwards, Ibrahim El-Salahi, Ben Enwonwu, Ellen Gallagher, Theodore Géricault, Barkley Hendricks, William Henry Jones, Loïs Mailou Jones, Titus Kaphar, Wifredo Lam, Norman Lewis, Ibrahim Mahama, Edna Manley, Archibald Motley, Abdias Nascimento, Gilberto de la Nuez, Toyin Ojih Odutola, Dalton Paula, Rosana Paulino, Howardena Pindell, Heitor dos Prazeres, Joshua Reynolds, Faith Ringgold, Gerard Sekoto, Alma Thomas, Hank Willis Thomas, Rubem Valentim, Kara Walker and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye.

John Singer Sargent’s renowned portrait “The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit” is examined in an aesthetic, philosophical, and personal tour de force that has been called “thoroughly absorbing” (New York Times Book Review); “brilliant and insightful”?(Wall Street Journal); “an attractive, well-illustrated scholarly book, further enlivened by the author’s warm and friendly tone” (Times Literary Supplement); “a uniquely crafted history” (The Magazine Antiques); “a brilliant work of criticism, without a word of jargon in it” (Maine Antique Digest); “sensitive and penetrating” (Choice); and “a meticulously researched account of [the Boits’] milieu, their eccentric lifestyle, its unintended effects on their daughters, and of the creation of the enchanting masterwork” (Cape Cod Times).

One of the most celebrated painters of his day, John Singer Sargent defines for many the style, optimism and opulence of turn-of-the-century America. Among his renowned portraits, "The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit" stands alongside "Madame X" and "Lady Agnew of Lochnaw" as one of Sargent''s immortal images. This painting depicts four young sisters in the spacious foyer of the family''s Paris apartment, strangely dispersed across the murky tones and depths of the square canvas, as though unrelated to one another, unsettled and unsettling to the eye. "The Daughters" both affirms and defies convention, flouting the boundaries between portrait and genre scene, formal composition and quick sketch or snapshot. Unveiled at the Paris Salon of 1883, it predated by just two years the scandal of "Madame X" and was itself characterized by one critic as "four corners and a void"; but Henry James came closer to the mark when he described the painter as a "knock-down insolence of talent," for few of Sargent''s works embody the epithet as well as "The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit." Drawing on numerous unpublished archival documents, scholar Erica E. Hirshler excavates all facets of this iconic canvas, discussing not only its significance as a work of art but also the figures and events involved in its making, its importance for Sargent''s career, its place in the tradition of artistic patronage and the myriad factors that have contributed to its lasting popularity and relevance. The result is an aesthetic, philosophical and personal tour de force that will change the way you look at Sargent''s work, and that both illuminates an iconic painting and reaffirms its pungent magnetism.

Written by the artist''s sister, Susanne Kippenberger, this first English-language biography draws both from personal memories of their shared childhood and exhaustive interviews with Kippenberger''s extended family of friends and colleagues in the art world. A radical reconception of Degas’ sculpture through the lens of gender, labor and more, with new photography of the worksPublished with Museu de Arte de São Paulo. This substantial new monograph on the work of Edgar Degas (1834–1917), one of the most significant artists of the 19th and 20th centuries, is a decisive contribution to the literature on the French Impressionist artist. An innovative and groundbreaking book, with underlying discussions related to “dance, politics and society,” it pays special attention to issues of gender, identity, labor, race and the representation of women.
