Today Kharkiv's unfortunate geographical position on the eastern edge of Europe makes it a frequent target for the Russian army's relentless shelling and airstrikes. Yet, not long ago, Ukraine's second-largest city was a vibrant centre of student life, progressive art, intellectual thought, and techno-logical innovation, all spiced by the tough post-industrial identity of its citizens. Born from waves of migration, modernization, industrialization, and revolution, Kharkiv trod a stormy path from its origins as a Cossack military fortress to a period (1919-1934) when it was the capital of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. This decade and a half was a golden age, marked by a dramatic construction boom that turned Kharkiv into a legendary Modernist city.In this publication author Ievgeniia Gubkina takes the reader on a journey through the city's history and architecture, from its Old Centre to its New Centre, home to Derzhprom, a Constructivist gem which was also the embodiment of a new model of social and economic relations. This architectural guide is a tribute to the indomitable spirit of freedom of Kharkiv's citizens. But it is also an important act of remembering and resistance: in documenting the city's buildings in words and photographs even as many of them are, day after day, being destroyed by Russian bombs, it keeps them intact and alive in our minds as a model for the city's future.

In the wake of Soviet Modernism’s belated renaissance, the monumental façade mosaics of Pyotr, Nikolai, and Alexander Jarsky stand as defiant expressions of individuality within an architecture of mass production. Created for serially manufactured housing blocks in post-earthquake Tashkent, these artworks challenge the conventional narrative of Soviet prefabricated construction as soulless, anonymous, and oppressive. Their vivid ornamentation – geometric, floral, figurative – gives voice to a Soviet-Uzbek style that emerged not through ideology but through artistic resistance embedded in concrete. This book documents for the first time the life and work of the Jarsky brothers, whose mosaic murals now number among Uzbekistan’s officially protected cultural assets. Based on two decades of research and rare personal encounters with the Jarsky family, it presents an architectural history written not by ministries but by hands shaping tiles – and identities – into lasting form.More than an homage, this monograph is a call to action. It interrogates the politics of heritage, the historiography of standardised architecture, and the role of art in contested urban space. As Uzbekistan cautiously begins to valorise its Soviet-era past, the question lingers: will these Modernist surfaces, born of a utopian impulse, find their place on the global stage of architectural heritage?

This meticulously researched guide explores the rich architectural heritage of the Uzbek capital through the captivating art of mosaics. Delve into the extraordinary legacy of Alexander, Nikolai, and Pyotr Jarsky, artists whose visionary work reshaped Tashkent’s urban landscape after the devastating earthquake of 1966. Their innovative techniques gave rise to breathtaking mosaic-adorned facades, masterfully blending modernist design with intricate Islamic motifs while reflecting the region’s cultural identity. This title offers an in-depth exploration of the artistry behind these vivid mosaics, spotlighting iconic works. Learn how artists like the Jarsky brothers, Vladimir Chub, Yakov Shapiro, Yury Zaitsev, and Irena Lipienė, among others, pioneered cost-effective yet aesthetically profound wall coverings, bas-reliefs, and lighting designs, leaving an enduring imprint on Tashkent’s architectural fabric. As global conversations around heritage preservation and urban development gain momentum, the cultural and historical significance of these mosaic-rich structures is increasingly being recognised. This guide invites readers to celebrate Uzbekistan’s artistic ingenuity and cultural heritage while advocating for their acknowledgement in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Urban planning was an essential instrument of the National Socialist dictatorship. It served to legitimize rule and demonstrate strength, accompanied rearmament and war, conveyed the socio-political program, was a medium of competition with other states, tied old and new professionals to the regime, and systematically marginalized population groups. In this book urban planning under the Nazi dictatorship is for the first time examined not only as something that evolved during the different periods of Nazi rule but also in the context of other European dictatorships of the time. The period between 1933 and 1945 saw important changes in the focus of Nazi urban planning. These affected the cast of principal actors, the content of the regime’s propaganda, cities and areas affected, programs and practices, and winners and losers. The result of this survey is a multi-layered picture that goes beyond the usual presentation of well-known power-projecting buildings to take into account a range of other important aspects including housing construction, urban renewal, internal colonization, buildings for rearmament, large-scale infrastructure, industrial areas, educational institutions, and camps.

Tashkent, the southernmost metropolis of millions in the Soviet Union, is a city redolent with architectural contrasts and paradoxes. Home to the world’s most beautiful prefabricated buildings, it features a prominent urban duality predicated upon the oriental Old City and the Russian New City.Never was this contrast brought into sharper focus than during the severe earthquake of 1966 which left the New City relatively unscathed but the Old City in ruins. Yet one respite was offered: a rebuilding effort which triggered an upsurge of innovation. The city thus became the face of Seismic Modernism – unprecedented in history, the earthquake stimulated the modernisation of urban development in Tashkent. Architects incorporated regional building traditions in their socialist modern designs, including the visually intriguing façade mosaics attributed to the little-known Jarsky brothers. The rebuilding of Tashkent provides a perfect example of Soviet ideas about urban planning – in which technical standardisation and social requirements were no more of a contradiction than the design of experimental living concepts and the simultaneous search for an expression of national identity in building. Tashkent thus represents a unique example of radical urban redevelopment in a Soviet megacity with standard designs.

Since the Euromaidan, Kyiv has been the place where Europe‘s future is decided between East and West. Meanwhile, the hybrid war in eastern Ukraine and on the Crimean peninsula has escalated into an open Russian war of aggression. Significant buildings in the capital Kyiv and vital infrastructure has come under fire. The Kyiv Architectural Guide presents over 100 buildings worth seeing from 100 years of the city‘s history, compiled by Ukrainian architectural historian Semen Shyrochyn. The typical residential complexes of avant-garde architecture, the imposing palaces of the Stalin era, the iconic designs of Soviet modernism, as well as the most significant construction projects built since independence are also expertly presented. In over 300 pages, this architectural guide proves that Kyiv is much more than the capital of Ukraine. Kyiv is an inseparable part of the European community of nations, where mutual respect of values counts more than the power of the strongest. This title is part of the Histories of Ukrainian Architecture programme initiated by DOM publishers in response to Russia’s attack on Ukraine’s sovereignty on 24 February 2022.

Monumental mosaics were created throughout the USSR, but they played a special role in its capital. While in other Soviet cities and republics monumental mosaics became common in the 1960s, in Moscow mosaic was used for art-deco works and social realist 'pictures'. The entire history of Soviet art is thus reflected in Moscow's metro stations, palaces of culture, military museums, hospitals, schools, and prefabricated houses. Today, many of these works are disappearing before our eyes, victims of destruction or dismantling; the majority are not listed as under state protection, and a great number of their authors are unknown. This book collects 140 Soviet-era mosaics and arranges them in chronological order. It contains four main sections - Art Deco, Socialist Realism, Modernism, and Postmodernism - and includes a list of 295 mosaics that have been identified. This guide shows well-known works by Aleksander Deyneka, Pavel Korin, Boris Chernyshev, Evgeny Ablin, Yury Korolev, and Leonid Polishchuk side by side with mosaics by artists whose names were for a long time absent from the history of art and architecture. The idea for it came from American photographer James Hill, who spent three years seeking out and photographing works of Soviet monumental art that have not received the attention they deserve and that in the post-Soviet period have often been dismissed as propaganda.

Considering the immense diversity of sub-Saharan Africa's architecture and built realities, does it make sense to speak of an African architecture? How does this differ from architecture in Africa? What does the term architecture actually mean in the African context? And how could these questions be conceptualised while leaving behind pre-existing theoretical moulds and biases?Searching for new ways to theorise sub-Saharan African architecture, this collection of 49 essays broadens and develops the discourse around the architecture of a very rapidly changing continent. Its authors – practising architects and renowned scholars – put forward an array of heterogeneous perspectives, question old tropes and emerging narratives, and challenge popular concepts whilst proposing new ones. All with the aim of critically examining and advancing theoretical reflection on African architectures, both on the continent and globally.

The redevelopment of historical centers became an important policy field in the era of European dictatorships following the First World War. At that time historical centers were regarded as shabby and as tarnishing the desired image of a magnificent new city, of a showcase of the dictatorship. This led to the widespread demolition of older buildings. Historical streets and squares disappeared and were replaced by new apartments and workplaces for the loyal middle classes, by car-friendly roads and ostentatious new buildings. Nevertheless, the redevelopment of historical centers did not exclusively mean the eradication of the ‘old town’. The aim of the dictatorship in many cases was also the preservation, and often the cultic display, of historical testimonials to past greatness. The book presents examples of the redevelopment of historical centers in Mussolini’s Italy, in Stalin’s Soviet Union, in Hitler’s Germany, in Salazar’s Portugal and in Franco’s Spain.

The world is facing rapid urbanisation and an escalating climate crisis. According to UN-Habitat, by 2050 around 70 per cent of the world’s population – some 6.7 billion people – will be living in cities, putting enormous pressure on infrastructure, resources, and the environment. The question is no longer whether cities and their regions must change, but how – and how to drive that change swiftly and effectively. These challenges require global collaboration, which is where SURE (Sustainable Development of Urban Regions), a funding priority of the German state, steps in. SURE fosters cooperation between Germany, Southeast Asia and China. However, its goal extends well beyond that. It aims to develop solutions that can be implemented locally and transferred to other urban regions anywhere in the world.Navigating Urban Development is the outcome of the SURE research project on moderation and synthesis. It presents ten case studies from projects in Cambodia, China, Laos, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. The book concludes with a call for a new culture of transformative research to support the development of urban projects and initiatives.

The first of its kind, the Shenzhen Architectural Guide is dedicated to the city’s architecture and conceived as an atlas. The pages inside are filled with more than 150 relevant buildings and places that constitute the physical palimpsest of modern China’s most famous foundational town.Founded in 1978 as one of the first Special Economic Zones under Deng Xiaoping’s reforms, Shenzhen is a young city that was essentially built from the ground up at a rapid pace – hence the infamous ‘Shenzhen Speed’. Unlike most places, it has built its fortune on being propelled into the future without any connection to the past. Shenzhen is a place where business, immigration, ports, borders, and nature come together to shape a unique and, at times, mystifying architectural experience. This guide will introduce the reader to Shenzhen’s kaleidoscopic architecture with the help of bilingual coordinates and geodata. It will also refer to the city's political history and cultural geography. By photographing these state-of-the-art works in 2020, the book captures a sort of 'here-and-now' that will soon be transformed once again.

Prefabricated housing is a pressing issue – for those looking for affordable homes as well as for refugees fleeing wars or natural disasters. In common with politicians, architects were caught unawares by the largest wave of migration since the end of the Second World War. However, are tent cities and containers the best solution for cheap, dignified, and quickly assembled accommodation for displaced persons? This challenging situation, along with the changing urban landscape, with its ever-diminishing space, calls into question existing standards in relation to serial housing. Bold and unconventional ideas are called for if architects are to offer high-quality solutions. From eccentric experiments all the way to projects that have already been realized, international design teams present their work between the twin poles of unconventional developments and life-saving shelters in this volume spanning more than 250 pages.Introduced with articles on design principles, and divided into three sections according to the form the structures take when delivered – cuboid, panels and custom units – the book covers everything from playful follies to architectural constructions for the homeless and outpatient medical stations which offer a response to social problems and space shortages. The text, photographs and plans put forward ideas as to how more can be done than the mere assembling of containers. Should we not first consider notions bordering on the absurd in order to come up with workable solutions for housing today?

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was an architect who communicated his ideas with the same disciplined restraint as he developed his buildings. This book is a heterogeneous collection of writings, speeches, and interviews. Read together, they reveal the breadth of Mies’ deep engagement with architecture and education in Germany and the USA. By including both written and spoken words, the co-editors reveal how Mies was able to extend his influence well beyond the classroom-studio and the profession to reach a general audience eager to learn more about his architectural philosophy during a time of great cultural and societal upheaval.

This book highlights radical urban transformation in eight cities spread across continental Europe. The point of departure, and the foundation of European urbanisation, is the Roman colonial town. In every case social dynamics guided the urban transitions in a traceable way, such that it has been possible to deduce the intellectual underpinnings of the contemporary built environments, as featured in these pages. Differing contexts of time and place show the overarching march of European history and related themes at the urban level. Fundamental changes are brought to light. Each story demonstrates a separate and fundamental transition, ranging from earlier collective configurations to the more institutionalised structures of later periods.

Does African architecture exist?Pan-Africanism was never a geography. It was a political and intellectual claim, born in the diaspora, carried across oceans, forged in the encounter between colonisation, displacement, and the refusal to be defined by either. It asked what becomes possible when a scattered world insists on its own continuity. This book asks that question through architecture. The manifestos gathered here were written by the practices of the inaugural Pan-African Biennale 2026 in Nairobi – local, diasporic, and extracontinental voices from Nairobi and Dakar, Khartoum and Johannesburg, São Paulo and Port-au-Prince, New York and London, Kingston and Cape Town, and beyond. Each was asked to respond to the curatorial question from within their own conditions: their ecologies, their histories, their materials, their spatial urgencies. What emerges across these pages is not a definition. It is a field of situated knowledge – plural, contested, and irreducibly grounded – that reframes the terms of a conversation architectural discourse has held for too long without these voices at its centre. To shift the centre is to move the ground of the conversation itself. From fragility to resilience. From erasure to reclamation. From the periphery to authorship. These are not abstract positions. They are spatial realities, lived and practiced across the continent and its diaspora, now made legible on their own terms.

Felix Novikov tells the dramatic story of Soviet architecture, portraying the conditions he worked in and how he collaborated with the government and other participants during the creative process. He explains how Soviet design and planning institutes were organized with reference to the Union of the Architects of the USSR and describes the creative ideals of his generation of architects, who are today identified as Soviet Modernists.

Amid the endless plains of Kazakhstan, an extraordinary architectural experiment has arisen: Astana. Formerly an outpost of the Tsarist Empire in the barren steppe, the location had developed into a typical Soviet provincial town. However, both internationally renowned and local architects are now designing spectacular and unique buildings in this dynamic city. Furthermore, Astana will host the Expo 2017 which will take place only twenty years after the city was built in the steppe alongside the old centre. The Astana Architectural Guide documents eighty diverse buildings and projects in the Kazakh metropolis, which was masterplanned by Kisho Kurokawa, and examines the contradictory nature at play within oriental traditions, western models and Soviet influences. Therefore, this publication represents a critical analysis of architecture and capital city planning in the centre of Eurasia.

Some architects regard a visit to Chicago as equal in importance to a pilgrimage to Rome or Athens: The soaring American metropolis at the shores of Lake Michigan has amassed an unmatched collection of first-rate buildings in every possible style since late nineteenth-century industrialization. This book looks at Chicago through the prism of Post-Modernism — under the premise that this style did not cease to exist sometime in the 1990s, but is, in fact, still with us today.Starting with the 1978 Illinois Regional Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, curator and critic Vladimir Belogolovsky presents 100 structures, most of which were created after the turn of the millennium. These lavishly illustrated building descriptions are supplemented by introductory essays and interviews with Chicago architects, including Stanley Tigerman, Helmut Jahn and Jeanne Gang.

The fifth largest population in the world is rapidly expanding. For the past seven decades, both Indonesian and international architects have developed new ideas in order to fulfil the demands of the country's 250_ million inhabitants, in line with economic progress. Imelda Akmal's Architectural Guide Indonesia presents over one hundred must-visit buildings which date from the post- independence era (1945) to the present day. The book explores buildings that still embrace traditional Indonesian architectural heritage as well as those whose design is based on practical considerations, thus offering a valuable insight into the works of emerging and established architects. Each project is illustrated with stunning colour photo graphs and detailed information to facilitate an understanding of its historical and political context.

Prefabricated housing has long since ceased to mean the disfigurement of the urban landscape with monotonous grey boxes. Particularly in Central Europe and Russia, modern assembly methods and 100 years of experience in planning prefabricated buildings and constructing with large panels are experiencing a renaissance. Whereas predominantly in Moscow– the largest European metropolis with seventeen million – prefabricated housing is an essential instrument for the provision of residential assistance, prefabrication methods in Germanyand Switzerland, for example, are used to build exclusive properties. This construction manual examines the potential of prefabricated housing on structural, historical and architectural grounds. In addition to an insight into the methods of production and assembly, roughly twenty selected examples provide a contribution to the discussion on affordable housing.
