This text examines President Woodrow Wilson's policies regarding the future of the Danubian basin. It reveals that American attitudes and policies toward Hungarian participation in the Dual Monarchy were influenced by propaganda, the domestic American press and the demands of diplomacy.

Exploring how the early 1970s were years of crucial significance in the bipolar world which prevailed until the collapse of the Soviet Union, this volume reveals this period as the stage of the decomposition of the Soviet empire. For the first time, the superpowers engaged in a voluntary dialogue to normalize their strained relations after some 50 years of hostility and place their rivalries within a cooperative framework. as a privileged partner of the United States, the Soviet Union assumed the position of equality with the leading world power, a position which was exploited for political and moral advantage.

"In Search of Legality" examines Mikhail M. Based on material from the Manuscript Division of the Russian National Library, the Russian State Historical Archives, and the Archives of the Academy of Sciences (all in St. Petersburg, Russia) a picture emerges of the codification efforts.

By 1989 it was obvious that the majority of Hungary's population wanted fundamental political economic and social changes. The situation resembled what prevailed in 1956 in Hungary, when massive Soviet aggression suppressed a newborn democracy. This time it was totally up to the Hungarians. This volume by leading Hungarian and Western scholars exposes the political, economic, moral, legal judicial and cultural components of the peaceful transition that over a ten-year period led to genuine democracy in Hungary.

This is the story of an anthropological expedition to Albania in 1929. The author, an Albanian educator, accompanied Dr. Carleton S. Coon of Harvard University. He said that his motive in writing the book was to given an account of the rugged Highlands as seen by an Albanian, in contrast to "travel accounts written by foreign visitors" to Albania. The book presents a faithful portrayal of Northern Albania as it was some seventy years ago. Dr. Coon called the book "a remarkably full and enjoyable ethnography of a people and their culture undergoing rapid change."

This is the first systematic study of the Sovietization of northern Transylvania, ceded to Hungary by the Vienna Diktat of 1940. This historiography of that transitional period fills an imortant gap in the existing research.

This is the first complete biography of the outstanding Russian general and diplomat Count N. P. Ignat'ev (1832-1908) who negotiated the important treaties of Beijing and San Stefano. The book focuses on his brilliant career in Central Asia as a leading player in the "Great Game", China and especially as ambassador in Constantinople, 1864-77., where he acquired the monikers "the Vice-Sultan" for his powerful position there and "Father of Lies" for his alleged tendency to tell fibs (a reputation here reassessed).

This book presents thirteen articles by leading scholars offering different approaches to mediating, facilitating, and resolving ethnic and class tensions, based on case studies in Hungary, Bulgaria, the Baltic States, and Yugoslavia. The collapse of the European communist regimes has provided social scientists with the rare opportunity to observe the birth of new political institutions and to reexamine the effect of political behavior on institutional change. In the last decade, scholars and policy makers have argued that new institiutional frameworks from the democratic world would solve Eastern Europe's many economic and political problems. This volume builds on the work of Robert Putnam to argue that what makes institutions democratic goes beyond state arrangements to the realm of society. The new institutions in Eastern Europe performed differently in various countries, although their formal structure varied little among countries. Stan explores the extent to which social capital affected the performance of one such institution, the Romanian county council.

This book examines attempts to cultivate an Austrian identity based on a civic rather than an ethnic conception of a national community. It focuses on the ideas of Joseph Samuel Bloch, an Austrian-Jewish writer and politician who sought to cultivate a civic identity to unify the nationalities of multiethnic Austria. Bloch called for a hyphenated Austrian consciousness that respected the desire to protect pre-existing ethnic, cultural, religious, and linguistic bonds while building transethnic ties based on citizenship. This study also analyzes the ideas of his mentor, Adolf Fischhof, another Austrian-Jewish reform-minded politician. Finally, it compares Bloch's ideas to those of other Austrian reformers of various ethnic and political backgrounds in order to discover how they conceived of a supraethnic Austrian consciousness. "Imagining an Austrian Nation" explores the meaning of nationalism and identity in a pluralistic society, issues that confound humanity as much in the twenty-first century as they did in the nineteenth.

Analysis of public opinion leading up to and including World War II inevitably raises the issue of responsibility for the Holocaust of Hungarian Jewry. Reviewing both archival material and contemporary sources, this book asks how extremist publications, full of hatred against Jews, affected contemporaries. Why was it that Hungarian society ignored the dangers threatening Jews in Europe, including Hungary? Janos Pelle looks for answers in contemporary and modern literature in the psychology and contrasts theories in operation at those tragic times with current information.

This book describes the attempt in post-Communist Hungary to distort and denigrate the Holocaust, often by respectable public figures such as intellectuals, members of parliament, and influential government and party leaders. Such figures appeared resolved to explain and justify Hungary's linkage to Nazi Germany, rehabilitate the Horthy regime, and absolve the country of any responsibility for the deaths of approximately 550,000 of its Jewish citizens.

This book examines the activities of the Greeks of South Russia during the Imperial era by focusing on the Greek Benevolent Association of Odessa (GBAO). Odessa had the largest concentration of urban Greeks in the Russian empire, and the Greeks enjoyed economic and social prestige. While the stated goals of the GBAO were charitable, many of the organization's activities were nevertheless political. Because of the wealth and power of the GBAO, and its failure to openly antagonize the tsarist regime, the GBAO was able to avoid the most onerous provisions of the russification laws being pursuing by the government during the Imperial era.

This books deals with the grave, some times insurmountable, difficulties encountered by the Romanian state in the period from 1939-1941. Occupying a strategic position and rich in economic resources, Romania was caught between the ambitions of the German Reich and the Soviet Union. An agreement reached between these two powers in 1939 caused Romania to lose territories to her neighbors in the east, west and south; their disagreement a year later, together with the German promise of recovering such lost territories in the east and west compelled Romania to join the Axis powers in their military campaign conducted in 1941 against the Soviet Union.

Laszlo Bardossy was a wartime prime minister executed for his role in mass murder, but his role remains controversial. His trial was riddled with blunders and some, especially those on the extreme right, now call him a martyr and are demanding a retrial. Was Bardossy a villain or was he himself a victim of Communist-inspired mass murder? He was at the helm in 1941-42 when Hungary declared war on Britain, the United States, and the Soviet Union, and he was charged with sending more than 600,00 Jews to Nazi death camps. This book offers readers a balanced interpretation of Bardossy's life. The volume also includes two rare documents: the charges of the prosecution in his post-war trial, and Bardossy's statement in defense of his policies.

A leader of "the new Europe" offers a unique perspective on recent history. A stalwart ally and strategic partner in the war against terror and a new member of NATO, Romania with its vibrant democracy and robust economy is a far different place than it was in mid-twentieth century. According to some analysts, the twentieth century was a "short century" spanning the years from the outbreak of World War I in 1914 to the fall of Soviet-style Communism in 1991. It was nevertheless one of the most dynamic and dramatic centuries in the history of civilization, featuring two world wars of unprecedented atrocity, the rise of Fascism, state Communism, the fall of the colonial empires, the Cold War, and the global confrontation of two opposing political systems. This book depicts, from the uniquely personal perspective of Ion Iliescu, former president of Romania, some of the historical drama of that "short century."

Oldson examines the efforts of religious authorities in Western Europe to reconstruct a Catholic majority in Transylvania after the Ottoman Empire ceded control of the region. These attempts sparked a pronounced sense of Romanian historical consciousness that resulted in an impassioned religious and cultural resistance, centering on the Eastern liturgy.
