These are stories that are not openly discussed by combat veterans and are usually only whispered between individuals at military reunions. The tales range from sad to hilarious, from surprising to horrible, but they are real. These are not the creations of a screenwriter or some novelist's pipe dreams, they are actual events, that had a lifelong impact on the soldiers who experienced them. Such a collection could only have resulted from 35 years of researcher on the 101st Airborne Division, which entailed interviews with almost 1000 veterans who wore the "screaming eagle" patch in WW2. This book is widely illustrated with photos of the time, but also places, objects, and equipment of the paratroopers of the 101st.

It answers all your questions! The first edition of the Dictionnaire de la Grande Armée was published in 2002, on the eve of the great Napoleonic military bicentenary celebrations, which took place between 2004 and 2015. Since then, a lot of publications have been brought out; this edition takes this into account and brings the different sections up to date. The first aim of this dictionary is to answer amateurs’ questions both general and precise. This book is unique in that it has no equivalent nowadays; it’s a work tool and a reference book which makes often complex and wide-ranging scattered research easier; it won the Grand Prix Premier Empire from the Fondation Napoléon when it came out. This Dictionnaire de la Grande Armée is now an easy, condensed synthesis which should delight all Napoleon enthusiasts, researchers and students who are interested in things military. Wherever possible at the end of the articles, we have indicated the references as well as the bibliographical route to take in order to refine and complement the researches.New: in this edition we have 600 biographies of people who had something to do with this military period, anything of an anecdotal nature which has a link to army organisation and military memorialists; we have also added 127 biographies of people linked to Napoleonic military history from the 19th and 20th Centuries, amateurs who were collectors, writers, historians, painters, etc., like Detaille, Lalauze, Margerand, Martinien, Rousselot, Saski, Six, etc. This part is completely new. In this second edition, there are more articles – at least 2 600 – but they have been padded out and are more precise and in a lot of cases quite new. The book finishes with a long bibliography. With all these articles, we hope you will save time in your future research and that you will discover a lot of new information, not to mention the pleasure of reading more about the history of this military epic. This dictionary is a tool which you will use often and is a must for your bookcase: that’s what it’s for!

A spectacular, large format, full colour book, packed with over 200 photographs, maps and charts. The book is divided into the sectors associated with the Normandy landings in 1944.

Following the hugely successful “Invasion Journal Pictorial”, the first volume in the Memorial Album Collection, with sales of 60,000 copies since 1983, this new “Memorial” follows the campaign of the 1st US Army, step by step, from 7 June to 22 August 1944, from the beaches to the Falaise pocket, the battles for Cherbourg and Saint-Lô, and the breakout at Avranches. A fantastic guide to the battle with present day color photos for comparison with black and white photos from the period

In the evening of June 12, Weygand ordered all the troops who were still struggling to make a brutal drop across the front and to retreat as far as possible towards the south in order to avoid what remained of the French army to undergo a total annihilation. The Germans did not take long to realise that the French were slipping away, and thus immediately threw all their units onto the path of the retreating troops in order to thwart what remained of their plans. What resulted was a chase in which on one side, men would sacrifice themselves for a cause already lost while the other men would fall for a cause already won. Contrary to what one might think, the fighting during the second half of June would be as hard as the previous weeks, and bloody clashes would occur on both sides, as much for the conquest of Cherbourg as for Champagne in Burgundy, or in the Alps or along the Swiss border as units of the Gruppe Guderian would lock in a gigantic trap all the armies of the East.Recounted here is the story of these battles often misunderstood or unknown. This book retraces the history in over four hundred pages, and more than a thousand pictures, mostly unpublished. History has, it seems, only wanted to retain the last days of the campaign in defence of Saumur or the fighting of Voreppe, which, however, offers very little justice for men who fell on the Marne, on Saulx, at Montplonne, Saulieu, Saint-Seine-Abbey, at Maîche in Saint Hippolyte on the slopes of the Vosges or in the valley of the Moselle, to mention only a few places where the French soldier has paid honour to his flag all the way to the end.

In this book, Matthew LONG offers us a unique evocation detailed and complete the journey to Eugene B. SLEDGE, using a mortar 1st Marine Division who fought on the front Pacific during the last year war. Describing the battles of the Marines Peleliu and Okinawa, the author relates, step by step, each tragic moment marking the journey of the character warrior central narrative. The book also includes a rich set of charts descriptions informing us the composition of the units and accurate information on weapons and the equipment in use among the troops of the US Marine Corps at that time.- TEXT IN FRENCH -

This book traces the history, organization, uniforms and equipment between 1939 and 1945 of the Waffen SS. This elite force counted nearly a million volunteers from all European countries. Enjoying the full support of the Nazi regime, Waffen SS will fight on all fronts in Europe between 1939 and 1945.The variety of uniforms presented show how the German stewardship reserved, especially from 1941, the most modern equipment"the darling of the regime."Caps, helmets, helmet covers, jackets, camouflage uniforms, belts buckles, equipment, weapons etc. All the panoply of Waffen SS is carefully detailed in the book of 2 volumes with rigorously authentic objects. Accompanied by original photographs mostly unpublished and from private archives, this book covers a gap in the field in which no truly comprehensive study has been done to date.

This book offers a meticulous study of the fighting at Fontenay-le-Pesnel and at Rauray to the west of Caen, between 25 and 29 June 1944. Both authors, Frédéric Deprun and Baptiste Flotté, wanted to give a precise account of this episode of the Battle of Normandy, starting with Operation Martlet, on the flank of Operation Epsom. Extremely detailed research concentrates on the lynchpin at Rauray and its armour confrontations. A precise chronology has been made of the destruction of the Panther tanks in front of Fontenay by the assaults by the Polar Bears and the 15th (Scottish) Infantry Division until they broke through the German defensive line held by the Panzer-Lehr-Division and the 12.SS Panzer- Division “Hitlerjugend”. By the precise localisation of unpublished photographs and an account of the operation from both sides, this three-part study pays particular attention to the relics of the fighting and the testimonies which go with each of the different acts of the battle. Text in French.

Books on Runes are not legion in France. Ever since the “Introduction to Runology” by Lucien Musset in 1965, very few works have been published on this subject which is nonetheless very rich. This new work enables the various opportunities of research on the appearance of the runes in Northern Europe to be analysed and understood. The author deals with all the theories that have been voiced and gives a novel analysis to runic inscriptions. He details the main epigraphic sources in old Fuþark of the German Iron Age and places them in their historical context. This work also offers aninteresting analysis of the symbolism of the different types of inscriptions, like “ALU”, “LAUKAZ” or “OTA”. Understanding these recurrent inscriptions throughout Northern Europe, enables one to revive the mental universe of these ancient Germans. Stephen Pollington is a British author who is well known in the United Kingdom for his numerous books and articles on the ancient history of Northern Europe. The first version of this book was published in 2016 with Anglo-Saxon Books and intended for the English public. With the French edition, the author has added new, unpublished entries, centred on discoveries made in France as well as the entries already present in the English version.

Gilles de Gouberville (1521–1578) was the perfect representative of the country gentry of the Renaissance, as both Lord of Mesnil-au-Val and Gouberville in Normandy, France, and lieutenant in charge of the waterways and forests of the viscounty of Valognes. His life and views are studied by historians around the world because of the extraordinary richness of the journals he wrote between 1549 and 1562. In these he recounts with exceptional precision the daily life of the inhabitants of the Cotentin Peninsula of the mid-16th century, giving the reader a window into the landscapes, life and preoccupations of this world. The volume is accompanied by engaging illustrations by Kévin Bazot, offering a renewed vision of Gilles de Gouberville and his universe. This is a French language title.

This book presents a detailed study of the Black Order's weapons, accompanied by rich and original iconography. It also, in the form of an illustrated dictionary, compiles documents and critical reading of the "cultural" and symbolic dimension of the characteristics of the Black Order. Complementing volume 1, this book helps discover and understand these still little-known aspects of the Hitler period. Text in French.

June 6, 1944, the 3rd British Infantry Division, considerably reinforced (with an armoured unit, special tanks, and a commando unit), landed on Sword Beach while, during the night, paratroopers from the 6th Airborne Division had already created a bridgehead to the northeast of Caen. In Bernage’s new work, not only do we find the German defenses coming face to face with the powerful forces advanced by the Allies, but also the major protagonists, among whom many have become legendary—Lord Lovat, Bill Millin, Major Howard, Commander Kieffer and his French commandos—but their adversaries as well, Major von Luck or Lieutenant Höller. Sword Objectif Caen presents a crucial page of history, brutally unfolded before Caen, the town that was martyred and which was only rescued after a long month of combat.

The battle of the Falaise Pocket, fought during World War II from 12–21 August 1944, was the decisive engagement of the Battle of Normandy. Taking its name from the area around the town of Falaise within which Army Group B, consisting of the German 7th and 5th Panzer Armies, became encircled by the advancing Western Allies, the battle is also referred to as the Falaise Gap after the corridor which the Germans sought to maintain to allow their escape. The battle resulted in the destruction of the bulk of Germany's forces west of the River Seine and opened the way to Paris and the German border. This battle is also noted as the scene of the death of Michael Wittmann, one of Germany’s top scoring Panzer aces and a household name in Germany at the time. This book is packed with photographs, some in colour, of the most dramatic days of the battle, and is an invaluable reference tool to any modeller, historian or enthusiast.French Language

The 9th SS Panzer Division "Hohenstaufen", also known as SS-Panzergrenadier-Division 9, SS-Panzergrenadier-Division 9 Hohenstaufen or 9. SS-Panzer-Division Hohenstaufen, was a German Waffen-SS Armoured division which saw action on both the Eastern and Western Fronts during World War II. The division was activated on the 31 December 1942. The men of the division were German conscripts aged 18, with a cadre of experienced staff from the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler. Their first action was in March 1944 in Poland, they were then moved to Normandy in June 1944. After the retreat from France they were moved to Arnhem in September 1944, to rest and refit and became involved in the Allied parachute landings. Their next action was the German advance in the Ardennes in the winter of 1944–1945. After the defeat in the Ardennes they were then moved to Hungary, and took part in the fighting to the west of Budapest in February and March. Falling back into Austria the division surrendered to the advancing United States Army on the 5 May 1945, at Steyr.Included are over 130 previously unpublished photos along with day by day reportage from 17 December 1944 to the capitulation from Sturmmann Semmler of the 4th battery. The Wiking division was the only armoured SS division to fight exclusively on the Eastern Front. It is true that it was partly composed of Flemish, Dutch and Scandinavian volunteers whose primary motivation—for most of them—, was to fight against Bolshevism. It would have been a political mistake to go up against the Western Allies. The division fought with an unrelenting energy despite the fact that victory was not always equal to its efforts and sacrifices, as in Cherkasy or Hungary. Among the ranks of its officers were included men such as Felix Steiner[1], Herbert Otto Gille[2], August Dieckmann, Hans Dorr[3] and Walter Schmidt to name a few. The history of this division, extremely detailed and illustrated by more than 2,500 exceptional photos largely from personal collections is here traced through a series of three volumes. The first covers the period from December 1940 to April 1942, the second from May 1942 until April 1943 and the third, recounts the last two years of war.[1]Felix Steiner was a German officer, who became Obergruppenführer of the Schutzstaffel, General of the Waffen-SS, and a signed-up member of the Nazi Party of Nazi Germany. He served in both World War I and World War II and was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords.[2]Herbert Otto Gille was a German general, and as a winner of the Knight's Cross with Oakleaves, Swords and Diamonds and of the German Cross in Gold, the most highly decorated member of the Waffen SS during World War II. By the end of the war he held the rank of SS-Obergruppenfuhrer und General der Waffen-SS.[3]Hans Dorr was a German Waffen-SS Obersturmbannführer (Lieutenant Colonel) who served with the 5. SS-Panzer-Division Wiking and was a commander of the SS-Regiment Germania. He was wounded 16 times during World War II and died at a Field hospital near Judenburg only a month before the war's end. He was also awarded the prestigious Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes mit Eichenlaub und Schwertern, Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords.

During the night of 5-6 June 1944, the Pathfinders were the first allied soldiers to set foot on Norman soil, the paratroops of the 82nd and the 101st Airborne Divisions fighting all night until the 4th Infantry Division, landing on Utah Beach, linked up with them. German troops and defences, paratroopers’ eyewitness accounts, unpublished material are all supplied in this superbly illustrated album.

After the success of Medieval Costumes, 1320-1480, comes another highly-anticipated volume. Once again, we discover the materials, the accessories (and jewels), the shoes, and various outfits for men, women, and children that characterize this period of history. Additionally, an appendix included with the volume details military dress and equipment of the era.TEXT IN FRENCH

Finally, a terrain guide for this tragic, iconic beach. General Shuey, the author, was close to the action. As a young officer, he served under the orders of veterans of Omaha beach, like General Cota, and he commanded the celebrated 116th Infantry Regiment before taking command of all of the 29th Division at the end of his career. Section by section, with complete and detailed maps, he retraces the operations, putting emphasis on accounts from veterans, and he studies these engagements as they compare to the original military plans, and as regards the role played by the German positions. An indispensable complement to Omaha Beach by Georges Bernage.

After Operation Cobra, Monty transferred the divisions of the Eighth Corps and the Thirtieth Corps in the sector of Caumont for an attack launched 30th July, thereafter known as Operation Bluecoat. The British losses were very high facing the Tiger and Jadgdpanther elite German forces. This detailed study is supported by numerous photos, maps, and testimonies hitherto unseen, and the marching journals of the units. 1,000 photos, maps, and documents, partially in colour. Sourced from several global archives, this book presents the life and achievements of the great sailor Korvettenkapitän Kentrat with more than 500 photographs and documents. Born in 1906 in the Moselle, he joined the Reichsmarine in October 1925 as a simple sailor and was rapidly promoted to officer. The text explores the entirety of Kentrat’s career in the German navy: his two-year stint on the Emden, the Hessen, during the Spanish Civil War, on the Deutschland (attacked by the Soviets), the Schlesien. In 1939, he joined the U-boats on U-25, commanded U-8 from May 1940 onwards, and then U-74 with which he saved three survivors of the Bismarck. He was awarded the Ritterkreuz in December 1941. He took command of U-196 in September 1942 in which he carried out the longest U-boat mission, 225 days at sea, returning to Bordeaux on 23 October 1943. In September 1944 he was assigned to the Kriegsmarine naval base at Kobé in Japan until the end of the war. He died on 9 January 1974. This book presents a rich selection of pictures which he mostly captioned himself, among which 130 photos of U-196 and twelve exceptional period photos in colour (with his dog Polo, returning from a mission aboard U-196, the submarine at sea), documents and personal effects. The book is presented in a completely novel way: this great sailor’s cruises are described by means of his personal documents, letters he wrote to his parents during his ports of call, uniform items and official records.
