Algebraic geometry is, loosely speaking, concerned with the study of zero sets of polynomials (over an algebraically closed field). As one often reads in prefaces of int- ductory books on algebraic geometry, it is not so easy to develop the basics of algebraic geometry without a proper knowledge of commutative algebra. On the other hand, the commutative algebra one needs is quite difficult to understand without the geometric motivation from which it has often developed. Local analytic geometry is concerned with germs of zero sets of analytic functions, that is, the study of such sets in the neighborhood of a point. It is not too big a surprise that the basic theory of local analytic geometry is, in many respects, similar to the basic theory of algebraic geometry. It would, therefore, appear to be a sensible idea to develop the two theories simultaneously. This, in fact, is not what we will do in this book, as the "commutative algebra" one needs in local analytic geometry is somewhat more difficult: one has to cope with convergence questions. The most prominent and important example is the substitution of division with remainder. Its substitution in local analytic geometry is called the Weierstraft Division Theorem. The above remarks motivated us to organize the first four chapters of this book as follows. In Chapter 1 we discuss the algebra we need. Here, we assume the reader attended courses on linear algebra and abstract algebra, including some Galois theory.

This work presents a new, abstract and comprehensive view of open distributed systems. The starting point is a small number of core concepts and basic principles, which are informally introduced and precisely defined using mathematical logic. It is shown how the basic concepts of open systems interconnection (OSI), which are currently the most important standardization activities in the context of open distributed systems, can be obtained by specialization and extension of these basic concepts. Application examples include the formal treatment of the interaction point concept and the hierarchical development of communication systems. This book is a contribution to the field of software engineering in general and to the design of open distributed systems in particular. It is oriented towards the design and implementation of real systems, and brings together both formal logical reasoning and current software engineering practice.

This volume presents an approach to the formal object-oriented specification of information systems. The approach focuses on the early phases of system development where existing systems have to be described or systems to be developed have to be prescribed (requirements specification or conceptional modeling). Systems are considered to be reactive systems composed from objects that evolve concurrently in a discrete, event-driven way. Based on a temporal logic framework, the language TROLL is defined. TROLL supports the integrated specification of structural and behavioural properties of objects, as well as abstractions like roles, specifications and composite objects. Furthermore, concepts for constructing systems specifications from parts are introduced. Finally, the approach is related to similar ones and discussed.

Distributed-memory multiprocessing systems (DMS), such as Intel's hypercubes, the Paragon, Thinking Machine's CM-5, and the Meiko Computing Surface, have rapidly gained user acceptance and promise to deliver the computing power required to solve the grand challenge problems of Science and Engineering. These machines are relatively inexpensive to build, and are potentially scalable to large numbers of processors. However, they are difficult to program: the non-uniformity of the memory which makes local accesses much faster than the transfer of non-local data via message-passing operations implies that the locality of algorithms must be exploited in order to achieve acceptable performance. The management of data, with the twin goals of both spreading the computational workload and minimizing the delays caused when a processor has to wait for non-local data, becomes of paramount importance. When a code is parallelized by hand, the programmer must distribute the program's work and data to the processors which will execute it. One of the common approaches to do so makes use of the regularity of most numerical computations. This is the so-called Single Program Multiple Data (SPMD) or data parallel model of computation. With this method, the data arrays in the original program are each distributed to the processors, establishing an ownership relation, and computations defining a data item are performed by the processors owning the data.

Parts of this text were used for several years by students in a one~term under graduate course in computer science. The students had to prepare projects in small groups (2~4 students).1 This book emphasizes practical experience with image processing. It offers a comprehensive study of • image processing and image analysis, • basics of speech processing, • object~oriented programming, • software design, • and programming in C++. The book is divided into four parts. In the first part we introduce image processing, image analysis, programming tools, and the basics of C++. In the second part we describe object~oriented programming in general and the possible applications of object~oriented concepts in C++. Several appli cations of object~oriented programming for image processing are discussed as well. The new features of C++ are introduced entirely through the use of examples. We cover the proper representation of the data that is a result of pattern analysis as well. The third part describes a complete system for image segmentation. Some of the material covered refers to the exercises found in the first and second parts: this verifies our belief that an image segmentation system of programs can be developed while simultaneously acquainting others to C++. We combine the data representation described in the second part with the algorithms that use and manipulate them here in the third part.

An increasing number of companies regard Business Process Redesign (BPR) as a significant means of improving their competitive position. The initial euphoria is being superseded by a more pragmatic assessment. This book demonstrates how a systematic, practical yet creative procedure can lead to more reliably successful BPR projects. Case studies and investigations support the superiority of a systematic, method-based approach as opposed to an "intuitive" one.Consequently, before the start of a project a method must be selected which corresponds to the strategic goals of the project and is suited to the company environment. This book formulates the central principles and criteria for this, which are derived from practical experience. A procedural model and checklists help the reader to define what he requires from the method. From these criteria are then derived suitable BPR tools. Of particular importance here is the underlying cost-benefit analysis. The book describes over a dozen BPR methods and as many tools within a uniform framework. This ensures comparability and allows correlation with project-specific requirements. Particular attention is paid to method-tool combinations that are designed for combined use.

The advent of the high-speed computer with its enormous storage capabilities enabled statisticians as well as researchers from the different topics of life sciences to apply mul tivariate statistical procedures to large data sets to explore their structures. More and more, methods of graphical representation and data analysis are used for investigations. These methods belong to a topic of growing popUlarity, known as "exploratory data analysis" or EDA. In many applications, there is reason to believe that a set of objects can be clus tered into subgroups that differ in meaningful ways. Extensive data sets, for example, are stored in clinical cancer registers. In large data sets like these, nobody would ex pect the objects to be homogeneous. The most commonly used terms for the class of procedures that seek to separate the component data into groups are "cluster analysis" or "numerical taxonomy". The origins of cluster analysis can be found in biology and anthropology at the beginning of the century. The first systematic investigations in cluster analysis are those of K. Pearson in 1894. The search for classifications or ty pologies of objects or persons, however, is indigenous not only to biology but to a wide variety of disciplines. Thus, in recent years, a growing interest in classification and related areas has taken place. Today, we see applications of cluster analysis not only to. biology but also to such diverse areas as psychology, regional analysis, marketing research, chemistry, archaeology and medicine.

Within the last decade or so, the accelerated growth of Nigeria in the fields of urbanisation, population, business as well as industry has led to some attention in assessment of available water resources in various parts of the country. Many workers (du Preez and Barber, 1965; Jackson, 1978; Faniran and Omorinbola, 1980; Ofodile, 1983; Egboka, 1983; Akujieze, 1984; Ogbukagu, 1984; Uma, 1984) have made significant contributions in this area. Water is important because the attainment of the goals of any society as well as the health and well-being of the population depends on a plentiful and reliable supply of this natural resource. Water forms an indispensable input into economic activities such as commerce, tourism and industry. The results of the various researches have revealed that water resources (surface and groundwater) in many parts of the country, especially the southern part, are more than adequate to meet any demand and only need development. A complete appraisal of available water resources is often best accomplished when aspects of water quality are included. This is because in a planned water supply system, quality constraints and requirements dictate the sources of water allocated to various stages. A public water supply, though contributing greatly to the human health and well-being, can also be a vehicle for spreading disease if not properly handled. In this paper, water quality of selected water resources (surface and groundwater) in some parts of Imo State, Nigeria are reported and suggestions advanced for their healthy untilization.

This book is an outcome of a 2-days Workshop on Automation Engineering held in Salzhausen (near Hamburg), F.R. Germany. The Workshop is annually organ ized by the Institute of Automation Technology and the Institute of Applied and Physical Chemistry of the University of Bremen. It is regularly joined by 30 to 40 participants representing the teaching and reserarch staff of both Institutes, as weIl as some invited colleagues from other universities and the regional industry. Usually 15/20 selected contributions, grouped in technical sessions (system modelling and identification, control systems design, computer hardware and soft ware, knowledge-based systems, robotics etc.), are presented at the Workshop, whereby the invited guests preferably present survey papers on current problems of modern systems engineering. For this book, 22 papers, contributed to the last two Workshops, are selected and grouped into 6 Chapters. The Chapters reflect the technical sessions listed above and give an average view on current research activities at both Institutes of the University. It is expected that the book will prove as a useful reference to the scientists and practicing engineers in the area of devel opment and application of methods of modern systems engineering in processing industry and the robotics.

Autonomous mobile systems (AMS) are systems capable of some mobility and equipped with advanced sensor devices in order to flexibly respond to changing environmental situations, thus achieving some degree of autonomy. The purpose of this book is to contribute to some essential topics in this broad research area related to sensing and control, but not to present a complete design of an AMS. Subjects conceming knowledge based control and decision, such as moving around obstacles, task planning and diagnosis are left for future publications in this series. Research in the area of AMS has grown rapidly during the last decade, see e.g. [WAXMAN et al. 87], [DICKMANNS , ZAPP 87]. The requirements of an AMS strongly depends on the desired tasks the system should execute, its operational environment and the expected speed of the AMS. For instance, road vehicles obtain velocities of 10 m/s and more, therefore the processing of sensor data such as video image sequences has to be very fast and simple, while indoor mobile robots deal with shorter distances and lower speeds, thus more sophistcated techniques are applicable and -as is done in our approach- additional sensors can be integrated to allow for multi sensor processing.

The Information Security Solutions Europe Conference (ISSE) was started in 1999 by EEMA and TeleTrusT with the support of the European COlnmission and the German Federal Minis try of Technology and Economics. Today the annual conference is a fixed event in every IT security professional's calendar. The aim of ISSE is to support the development of a European information security culture and especially a cross-border framework for trustworthy IT ap plications for citizens, industry and administration. Therefore, it is important to take into con sideration both international developments and European regulations and to allow for the in terdisciplinary character of the information security field. In the five years of its existence ISSE has thus helped shape the profile of this specialist area. The integration of security in IT applications was initially driven only by the actual security issues considered important by experts in the field; currently, however, the economic aspects of the corresponding solutions are the most important factor in deciding their success. ISSE offers a suitable podium for the discussion of the relationship between these considerations and for the presentation of the practical implementation of concepts with their technical, or ganisational and economic parameters.
