At its most basic, critical pedagogy provides a lens through which educators are better able to examine and interact with the politics of education. By "politics" we do not mean the "Republican/Democrat" type of politics, but, rather, the real, underlying power relationships that structure our world: for example, how we make meaning of commonplace events, the purpose and goals of public education, how schools are structured, the type of preparation teachers receive, the way students are perceived and treated, the curriculum we use, and so forth. Breaking Free: The Transformative Power of Critical Pedagogy, a collection of essays originally published in the Harvard Educational Review, was conceptualized with the central purpose of serving as an introduction to the field. It offers readers several editorial supports to facilitate their understanding of the complexity of such work. Chapter One, "Context and Culture: What Is Critical Pedagogy?" provides an explanation of the central concepts and theories that are generally grouped under the term "critical pedagogy." The remainder of the book is divided into two parts. The first part offers various perspectives on the larger social and political context within which educational policies and practices exist. Part Two focuses on the role of teachers and students in the process of learning and teaching.

This comprehensive book from the editors of the Harvard Educational Review examines the nature and uses of qualitative research. Researchers, practitioners, participants, and scholars address the proliferation of methodologies, ethical and disciplinary concerns, and issues of equity and diversity such research raises from a wide variety of viewpoints. Acts of Inquiry in Qualitative Research also presents a broad assortment of articles by authors from several academic disciplines who examine their own fields' contribution to qualitative research in the past as well as future trends.

An updated version of the best-selling Special Education at the Century's End, this new volume combines cutting-edge research and theory about students with disabilities with classic pieces that have influenced the special education field since the passage of the federal Education for All Handicapped Children Act in 1975. This new edition rediscovers those seminal articles and--through a new wave of equally groundbreaking articles--brings the issue up to the present day. Special Education for a New Century pays particularly close attention to how inclusive education practices can best be promoted in the era of standards-based accountability. In addition, it looks at special education among English-language learners and in early childhood classrooms, and offers new strategies for addressing the overrepresentation of African American and Latino students in special education. The volume also includes trenchant contributions by Alfredo J. Artiles, Thomas Hehir, and Christopher Kliewer, et al. that challenge existing assumptions about disabilities, urging teachers and administrators to cast away tired notions that denigrate students with disabilities and stand in the way of equal education for all. Just as Special Education at the Century's End profoundly influenced disability policy and practice when it was published over a decade ago, Special Education for a New Century sets the agenda for scholarship and policies concerning students with disabilities and inclusive education today. It offers rich resources for policymakers and practitioners alike as they face the challenge of guaranteeing inclusive education for all students in today's schools.

In Education Past and Present: Reflections on Research, Policy, and Practice, leading scholars comment on developments in the field of education over the past seventy-five years. Conceived as a commemoration of the Harvard Educational Review's 75th anniversary, this book offers new insights into educational history, psychology, policy, international education, and U.S. public education. Together, these essays analyze how education scholars and practitioners have embraced, resisted, and sometimes provoked changes in the way society has approached key issues in this immensely important field. The essays--from authors including Ellen Condliffe Lagemann, Kevin Kumashiro, Sonia Nieto, Jean Anyon, and Gary Orfield--address critical issues that have persisted for decades: the disconnect between educational psychologists and practitioners; the extent to which equity has been advanced through desegregation, bilingual education, and multicultural education; how history and the humanities might inform the practice of educational research; and how international education has shifted in concert with the expansion of service providers such as nongovernmental organizations. Featuring some of the foremost scholars in the field, Education Past and Present offers a concise, multidisciplinary assessment of the last seventy-five years of developments in education. The book will prove indispensable for those interested in assessing educational progress to date and gaining a keen sense of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

In influential and often groundbreaking articles from the Harvard Educational Review, the volume surveys multicultural education’s founding arguments and principles, describes its subsequent evolution, and looks toward its future role and impact.Comprised of articles by leading proponents of multicultural education, the book explores a complex and highly influential movement while offering direction and inspiration for the future.Contributors include Steven Z. Athanases, Dolores Delgado Bernal, Bryan McKinley Jones Brayboy, Dorinda J. Carter, Lisa D. Delpit, Signithia Fordham, Noah De Lissovoy, Emma Maughan, Sonia Nieto, Django Paris, Patricia J. Saylor, Paul Skilton-Sylvester, Beverly Daniel Tatum, Kathleen Weiler, and Arlette Ingram Willis.

Adolescent Literacy initially appeared as a special issue of the Harvard Educational Review. It explores key issues and debates in the adolescent literacy crisis, the popular use of cognitive strategies, and disciplinary and content-area literacy. Also examined are alternative forms of literacy, afterschool interventions, new instruction models for African American males, and the experiences of educators.

A trenchant and wide-ranging look at this alarming national trend, Disrupting the School-to-Prison Pipeline is unsparing in its account of the problem while pointing in the direction of meaningful and much-needed reforms. The “school-to-prison pipeline” has received much attention in the education world over the past few years. A fast-growing and disturbing development, it describes a range of circumstances whereby “children are funnelled out of public schools and into the juvenile and criminal justice systems.” Scholars, educators, parents, students, and organisers across the country have pointed to this shocking trend, insisting that it be identified and understood—and that it be addressed as an urgent matter by the larger community. This new volume from the Harvard Educational Review features essays from scholars, educators, students, and community activists who are working to disrupt, reverse, and redirect the pipeline. Alongside these authors are contributions from the people most affected: youth and adults who have been incarcerated, or whose lives have been shaped by the school-to-prison pipeline. Through stories, essays, and poems, these individuals add to the book’s comprehensive portrait of how our education and justice systems function—and how they fail to serve the interests of many young people.

Arts and Learning is an excellent introduction to the field of arts and education, particularly for teachers who want to make the arts — drama, dance, music, visual arts, and poetry, for example — a part of teaching and learning in their classrooms. First, Goldberg sets a framework for understanding the relationship between arts and learning, making a distinction among three different manifestations of this relationship: “learning about the arts” (i.e., the arts are taught as subjects separate and apart from the other academic subjects), “learning with the arts” (e.g., students study the songs of a particular time to learn about that period in history), and “learning through the arts,” in which students use art forms to both communicate and deepen what they know about a particular content area. In succeeding chapters, Goldberg explores specifically how learning can take place with and through the arts in various subject areas: literacy, history and social studies, geography, science, and math. The final chapter focuses on ways that teachers can connect with and develop the arts in their local communities.

This volume brings together the expert and timely writings of educational practitioners and researchers struggling to reform their classrooms to reach and teach diverse student populations. The contributors describe the importance of bringing one's own identity, culture, and history to discussions with disenfranchised communities. This book brings the reader into the classroom, where innovative teachers and researchers describe the transformative potential of personal experience when it is properly integrated into the learning environment. The balance between theory and practice makes Shifting Histories a valuable resource for teachers, school administrators, and policymakers alike.

In this remarkable collection of articles, teachers reflect on the complex worlds of their classrooms to gain a better understanding of their students, themselves, and the act of teaching. The contributors to Class Acts represent a diversity of backgrounds, subjects, grade levels, and educational philosophies. But they share a common approach: they all take time to reflect on finding new ways to listen to students, to make sense of their own teaching, and to take risks to transform work and social relations in their classrooms. The visions of classroom teaching in Class Acts are dynamic and inspiring. Read about how a third-grade teacher included the study of his students' urban neighborhood in his curriculum, or how a high school English teacher created a community of readers in her classroom. The teachers in Class Acts offer an engaging model of classroom teaching that stands in stark contrast to the traditional pedagogy found in U.S. schools.

Research on women and girls has exploded during the past twenty years. Since 1977, when the Harvard Educational Review published Carol Gilligan's now-classic article ""In a Different Voice,"" in which she argued so persuasively that women and girls must be understood on their own terms, researchers have been discovering, uncovering, and recovering women's ways of knowing, being, thinking, teaching, and learning. Minding Women charts the wealth of thought and writing related to women and girls and education that this process of discovery has produced. Minding Women begins with a ""Classics"" section--articles that call attention to the lack of research on girls and women and describe the effect this has had on knowledge and society. The contributors then discuss feminist pedagogy, and how it has changed and been refined over time. Girls and young women are the focus of the next section. Too often their voices and viewpoints are excluded from these discussions, so some of their own writings are included here. The book then explores women's educational history, showcasing some of the rich work in this area over the past twenty years. Identity issues are addressed in the final section, acknowledging that substantial differences exist among groups of women and girls on how they experience the world and their roles, prospects, and lives.

The history of the Chicano community's quest for educational equality is long and rich. Since the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo formalized the conquest of half of Mexico's territory into what is now the U.S. Southwest, Chicanos have fought to claim what was promised them in the Treaty--the enjoyment of all the rights of U.S. citizens. In terms of education, they certainly have never had equal access, opportunity, or resources, despite legal victories. In this volume, some of the leading scholars analyze why the quest for equality in education has remained so elusive. They do so by documenting both the plight and the struggle of Chicano communities over the past 150 years, using the guiding themes of the role of language, segregation, Americanization, and resistance in the history of education for Chicanos/Chicanas.

Geologists study volcanoes for years yet cannot predict exactly which will be the next to erupt. Meteorologists use highly advanced technology to study weather patterns but cannot forecast the weather with certainty. Teachers can present the same lesson to two classes, only to have it succeed one time and fail the next. Why is there such uncertainty in these situations? Because these are all complex systems. In the complex world of teaching, teachers face numerous unpredictable challenges from the dynamic interactions of teacher, student, curriculum, school, community, and culture. How do teachers manage to teach in such a complex world? To answer this question, the Editors of the Harvard Educational Review have collected the best writings on teaching published in the Review in The Complex World of Teaching. Part One, ""Inner Worlds,"" explores the private aspects of teachers' and students' lives that, although hidden, have a great impact on teaching and learning. Part Two, ""Outer Worlds,"" focuses on how powerful economic, social, political, and cultural forces from outside the classroom shape the work of teachers and students. Part Three, ""The Complex World of Teaching,"" illuminates how the intersection of the inner and outer worlds creates the dynamic complexity that is both the joy and the frustration of teaching. The Complex World of Teaching refuses to reduce teaching to a set of recipes, or to talk about teaching abstracted from practice. The Editors have combined theoretical chapters with studies from individual classrooms written by teachers themselves to capture the true complexity of teaching. Readers can join teachers as they recount their struggles and triumphs in the classroom pieces, and then move to the theoretical pieces to analyze the larger forces that shape those moments.

In this remarkable collection of educational journeys toward learning and liberation, students, scholars, and activists bring to life the ideas and histories of groups that have been silenced in mainstream educational arenas. The rich variety of learners in learning as a political act -- including Chicana women, Puerto Rican schoolchildren, Eritrean women, Hmong college women -- challenges our assumptions about learning. Gender, ethnic identity, class, national allegiance, age, sexuality -- all of these are dealt with from the vantage points of people engaged in struggles to learn and, through learning, to reach beyond where they are.

Over the last few decades, U.S. colleges and universities have witnessed increasing diversity in their student bodies. Yet faculty members, operating on the notion that one pedagogy fits all students, continue to employ traditional modes of instruction. This adherence to outdated pedagogies has created potentially harmful learning environments for all students—and particularly for students of color. Race and Higher Education addresses this persistent problem, guiding educators toward a better understanding of how changes in the student population have resulted in the need for new approaches to classroom instruction. By including voices from inside classrooms along with analyses from scholarly researchers, this volume provides college and university teachers, administrators, students, and scholars with a critical instrument for improving higher education.

The range of methodologies, perspectives, and research areas in language and literacy has exploded over the past ten years. Perspectives on Language and Literacy, a new publication from the Harvard Educational Review, provides a comprehensive overview of these trends and developments. In chapter after chapter, researchers, educators, sociologists, and linguists provide theoretical, empirical, and critical evaluations of language and literacy education; sociocultural examinations of language acquisition; and research on the developmental spectrum of language and literacy practices-from preschoolers to adults, with first and second language learners, in the United States and abroad.

There has long been a troubling divide between education policy and practice. Meaningful school reform efforts have suffered as a consequence. Policymakers often propose educational reforms that fail to take into account real schools, teachers, and students. Practitioners in turn often fail to see beyond their immediate challenges to the larger issues that preoccupy policymakers. Education Policy and Practice aims to promote more effective school reform by illuminating important connections between education policy and teaching and learning practice. The contributors to this collection focus on how to meet the needs of teachers and the students they serve, providing insights that will be of great value to the key players in the field of education. The book places special emphasis on teaching in urban settings and on improving teacher-student interactions in the classroom. The book addresses a number of pressing issues: how race, culture, power, and language affect actual classrooms and pedagogies; the social processes and school structures that can either hinder or support student learning; and the extent to which teachers have-or should have-control over their day-to-day instructional practices and decisions about their students.

Cultural Studies and Education is a timely introduction to cultural studies and the ways in which it can enrich both education scholarship and practice. An extensive field that in the last few decades has transformed many academic disciplines, cultural studies has yet to be fully considered by educators and education scholars. Cultural Studies and Education redresses this great shortcoming, bringing cultural studies and its implications for education to the fore. The book aims to serve three main purposes. First, it is an introduction for educators and education researchers to some of the most important theoretical debates and analytic frameworks that have shaped the field of cultural studies. Second, it offers an introduction to and examples of three important areas of inquiry in which education and cultural studies overlap: gender and queer studies; postcolonial and ethnic studies; and popular culture and youth studies. Third, it illustrates how education scholars have dealt with the conceptual challenges of cultural studies and how education offers unique perspectives and contributions to the broader debates in the field."

At a time when many in public life and public education are inclined to argue that racial issues and problems belong to a bygone era, this third edition of Facing Racism in Education makes clear the need for continued attention to and open discussion of race and education. This third edition of Facing Racism in Education continues the work begun in the first and second editions of this widely acclaimed book: breaking the silence about the experiences of people of color in education. The new volume features equal measures of classic essays from the previous two editions and new essays written since 1996. Together they offer a complex and compelling view of race in today’s education world. From the Editors’ Introduction:Although conversations about the importance of and need for "diversity" are occurring in some schools and public discourse, many politicians and educators fail to recognize the equally prevalent social and educational inequities that continue to plague our communities. Moreover, they resist challenging the structures of privilege and power that perpetuate the daily impact of racism on the lives and learning of students of color in contemporary American society. The contributors to this third volume of Facing Racism in Education address the many forms of racism still present in today's schools and classrooms, yet they also bear witness to the courage and conviction of communities, students, and teachers who work to deconstruct the logic of racism in education and dismantle its structures. They remind us that, as we question how far we have come since Brown, we must also recommit ourselves to the daily work of undoing racism through antiracist practice. While some might ask, "Aren't we done with this yet?" we maintain that, like democracy, diversity and commitment to educational equity represent more than an "outcome"; they are part of a process that each generation must take up, reinvent, and reinvigorate to ensure its continuation for generations to come. We hope these essays will support this process and challenge educators to continue to do this important and essential work.

This book illuminates the effects of segregation, desegregation, and integration on students, practitioners, communities, and policymakers in the fifty years since the landmark Brown v. Board of Education ruling. Articles by leading legal and education scholars address questions that are central to the Brown rulings' complex and immensely influential legacy: Has the promise of Brown been realized for all students in public schools? What effects, both positive and negative, have occurred throughout educational communities in the United States as a result of this court decision? How has the process of integration fared in the educational outcomes of African American, Latino, Asian American, Native American, and immigrant youth? In an essay written expressly for this volume, Harvard Law Professor Martha Minow offers her assessment of what has changed, and not, in the decades since Brown. Additional contributions from leading scholars offer a broad range of views on this complex and contested territory. A first group of articles focuses on desegregation policies and legal issues. Another section of essays examines the educational effects of integration policies on a wide range of racial and ethnic groups. As these latter articles clearly suggest, the implementation and consequences of integration policies in U.S. schools have turned out to be far more complex and various than the education community ever imagined in 1954.

International Education has become an increasingly prominent and urgent matter in recent decades. Since the 1990 and 2000 Education for All conferences in Thailand, and Senegal, educational access and quality have been important parts of a global development agenda. More recently, theUnited Nations Millennium Development Goals have called for dramatic increases in educational access and ensuring equity for those disadvantaged by national and regional power structures. International Education for the Millennium offers a detailed and comprehensive look at this vitally important field. Centrally concerned with the development of successful education systems and institutions throughout the world, the volume addresses those pressing questions—about access, equity, and quality—that inform the field today. The volume sheds light on important areas within this vast field: on contemporary theoretical work and research; on a range of national and international policies; and on education reform in developing countries.

The achievement gap looms large in the current era of high-stakes testing and accountability. Yet questions persist: Has the accountability movement—and attendant discussions on the achievement gap—focused attention on the true sources of educational failure in American schools? Do we need to look beyond classrooms and schools for credible accounts of disparities in educational outcomes? This book aims to shift attention from the current overwhelming emphasis on schools in discussions of the achievement gap to more fundamental questions about social and educational opportunity. Together its essays reintroduce the overlooked central issue in educational inequity: the lack of opportunity that many social groups face in our common quest for educational attainment. In a series of wide-ranging and carefully nuanced essays, The Opportunity Gap casts much-needed light on the vexed relationship between society and education—and on the crucial, persistent role that education plays in addressing social ills.

Indigenous Knowledge is resiliently local in character and thus poses a distinct contrast to the international, more impersonal system of knowledge prevalent in Western educational institutions. In the words of Mik’maq scholar Marie Battiste—a leading proponent of Indigenous Knowledge and a contributor to this volume—Indigenous Knowledge expresses “the vibrant relationships between the people, their ecosystems, and the other living beings and spirits that share their lands.” Indigenous Knowledge and Education argues that such knowledge has much to offer schools and students in the United States and beyond. The volume examines a wide range of Indigenous cultures and educational settings, including Native American, Haitian, Mexican, African, and Australian. The essays are grouped into three themes that exemplify many Indigenous cultures: struggle, strength, and survivance—the latter a notion of survival that emphasizes remembrance, regeneration, and spiritual renewal. Each of these themes is explored in a rich array of articles and capped with new essays by Marie Battiste, Gregory A. Cajete, and Bryan McKinley Jones Brayboy.

This timely book examines the complex and varied relations between educational institutions and societies at war. Drawn from the pages of the Harvard Educational Review, the essays provide multiple perspectives on how educational institutions support and oppose wartime efforts. As the editors of the volume note, the book reveals how people swept up in wars “reconsider and reshape education to reflect or resist the commitments, ideals, structures, and effects of wartime. Constituents use educational institutions to disseminate and reproduce dominant ideologies or to empower and inspire those marginalized.” A wide-ranging volume that addresses issues of vital importance within the United States and throughout the world, Education and War fills a crucial void in our understanding of education and its critical role in society.

From Dayton, Ohio, to Barcelona, Spain, this collection of essays from the Harvard Educational Review carries readers to places where people have first imagined—and then organized—their own educational responses to dehumanizing practices and conditions. Within a context of continued calls for education “reform,” Humanizing Education: Critical Alternatives to Reform seeks to inspire a collective imagination for radical alternatives. The contributors offer historic examples of hopeful and humanizing educational spaces, practices, and movements that embody a spirit of hope and change.
