HENI Publishing is delighted to present INVADER: In Conversation with Hans Ulrich Obrist, a book that offers unique insight into the enigmatic French street artist, renowned for his iconic ceramic tile mosaics inspired by the pixelated 8-bit video game art of the 1970s and 80s.INVADER features an expansive, in-depth interview conducted by Hans Ulrich Obrist, which guides readers through the artist’s recent Paris exhibition, Invader Space Station (17 February – 5 May 2024), in the first section and through his studio in the second, offering an unparalleled glimpse into Invader’s technical and creative processes, and the global impact of his work. The first section of the book traces the route of the exhibition – held at the former offices of the newspaper Libération– with sub-chapters corresponding to the ‘levels’ of the show, reflecting on the conceptual and spatial dimensions of Invader’s work and his position as a ‘hacker’ of public spaces. The second section takes place in the artist’s studio where the conversation continues on a more personal note, offering an intimate look into Invader’s creative world. Richly illustrated, the book maps Invader’s numerous artistic encounters, from the graphic novels of Enki Bilal to legendary street artists like Leonard Hilton McGurr (aka Futura 2000) and Tsang Tsou-choi (the ‘King of Kowloon’), as well as his relationships with contemporaries including the provocative British artist Damien Hirst, American artist and activist Shepard Fairey and New York graffiti artist Revs.

Acclaimed on first publication, Harriet Vyner s Groovy Bob is the cult biography of hedonistic gallery owner Robert Fraser and a dazzling evocation of 1960s culture and counter-culture. Taste-maker, heroin addict and promiscuous homosexual, Fraser astonished London with the artists he introduced: Andy Warhol, Peter Blake, Claes Oldenburg, Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Told through the voices of those who knew him best Paul McCartney, Richard Hamilton, Mick Jagger, Bridget Riley, Keith Richards, Kenneth Anger, Malcolm McLaren and Vyner herself Groovy Bob is a brilliant biography and a searing portrait of the most exhilarating period in post-war British social history. This republication features a new afterword by the author and colour plates including works from the major exhibition A Strong Sweet Smell of Incense: A Portrait of Robert Fraser, curated by Vyner and Brian Clarke at Pace London, 2015.

Francis Bacon: Paintings is a compact collection of the complete paintings of Irish-born British figurative painter Francis Bacon. Accompanied by a curated selection of compelling quotes — from figures such as Lucian Freud, Roald Dahl and Damien Hirst — the book guides the reader through the evolution of Bacon’s distinctive aesthetic. A master of the grotesque, Bacon created art that is both unsettling and hypnotic, repulsive and irresistible. Emerging from a turbulent inner life and the devastation of World War II, his images retain a quality of urgency that continues to resonate with contemporary audiences. Over a career spanning more than five decades, Bacon produced almost 500 paintings, including his signature diptychs and triptychs. From his early Surrealist experiments of the 1920s to the stark, elegiac works completed just before his death, this book charts a lifetime of radical and groundbreaking artistry.

In answering the question posed by its title, and drawing on his twenty year relationship with the artists, Michael Bracewell is the first writer to engage directly with Gilbert & George to understand why they have devoted their lives exclusively and continuously - to the vision of art they conceived within months of first meeting. What emerges piece by piece is a portrait of Gilbert & George as two men who are infinitely more intense, strange, determined and alone than their longstanding public image suggests.

Tommy's new book follows the international success of his first book, An Excuse to Draw. As title suggests, Tommy approaches scenes with a photographic eye but renders them in this trademark detailed drawing style. The subjects are wide ranging including wildlife, models, travel and movie sets and feature his characteristic charm and wit, with astonishing level of detail he is known for. In a style at times reminiscent of cartoonists like Robert Crumb yet always wholly his own, Tommy Kane presents his subjects with a mixture of surrealism, humour and thoughtfulness.

This artist s book presents 84 reproductions of sketches taken from a notebook made by Gerhard Richter between 2004 and 2009. Some sketches feature figurative motifs, human forms and faces, while others appear as purely abstract shapes, configurations and patterns.

Following her 2010 publication dedicated to roses, Cologne-based artist Sabine Moritz here turns her attention to lilies, which she first began depicting in the mid 1990s. Working on paper to produce fifty-nine charcoal, pastel and oil pastel drawings, similiarly she often approaches works as studies or exercises in observation and representation. During the development of this publication, which was originally conceived as a collection of Moritz s drawings of lilies, the artist had the idea to introduce another ongoing body of work drawings of objects alongside the lilies. These objects are primarily statues, statuettes and figurines hand-made works of art from different periods in history, such as a classical torso, an African figurine, and a Buddhist head. Moritz s drawings of objects reflect a range of ideas and registers, moods and sentiments. Including the objects alongside the lilies opens up questions of time, life, death, belief, truth, human psychology and the very process o

The Cage paintings were conceived as a single coherent group, and displayed for the first time at the Venice Biennale in 2007. Their titles, Cage (1) (6), pay homage to the American avant- garde composer John Cage (1912 92). In his Lecture on Nothing , Cage famously declared I have nothing to say and I m saying it . Richter is equally suspicious of ideologies and any claim to absolute truth. He shies away from giving psychological interpretations to his paintings, preferring to allow viewers and critics to make up their own minds. Leading critic Robert Storr considers the importance of the Cage paintings within Richter s practice and within the wider context of abstract art. A series of extraordinary, detailed photographs document the development of each painting, day by day, and show the artist at work on these monumental canvases, giving unique insight into his working methods.

In this book, curator Ingrid Beazley draws parallels between classic and contemporary styles, showcasing how works from the Dulwich Picture Gallery s permanent collection by painters such as Rembrandt, Gainsborough, Rubens, Van Dyck and Murillo have influenced works by street artists working in the local area such as Stik, Conor Harrington, Thierry Noir, Phlegm and RUN. Featuring pieces by 21 internationally renowned street artists, the book is illustrated with specially commissioned colour photography throughout.

It was in Paris in 1927, at an exhibition dedicated to Picasso, that Francis Bacon grasped his vocation as a painter. In 1946, he moved to Monaco on the French Riviera where he lived for four years, his time in the Principality marking a turning point in his art; with his popes series, he became a painter of the human figure. In Paris he befriended artists and intellectuals, such as Giacometti and Leiris, whilst the city would become the setting for the crystalisation of his reputation in 1971 with the retrospective at the Grand Palais. In 1975, Bacon would take a studio in the Marais district. This bilingual publication co-published by Albin Michel and The Francis Bacon MB Art Foundation tells of Bacon s deep ties with France and Monaco, and has been overseen by Martin Harrison, author of Francis Bacon: Catalogue Raisonne and curator of the coinciding exhibition Francis Bacon, Monaco et la culture franc aise which runs at Grimaldi Forum, Monaco from 2 July 2016 until 4 September 2

Memory as a dynamic process has been the underlying theme of Sabine Moritz s drawings and paintings since the early 1990s. In her work the Cologne-based artist has captured remembered images from her childhood in the GDR; drawn flower compositions; and in recent years has engaged with the motif of war. This publication presents Moritz s latest work: a collection of drawings and paintings of helicopters created between 2002 and 2013. The Helicopter series has arisen from Moritz s interest in the shift in their symbolic meaning. They are based on images of helicopters from newspapers and television that the artist transferred into her own language. The outcome is a series of beautiful drawings and paintings that range from objective depictions of helicopters to more poetic compositions. The works are accompanied by poems by Adam Zagajewski and Friedrich Holderlin, alongside a text by Hans Ulrich Obrist.

Following the limited edition hardback November title published in 2013 by HENI Publishing, the paperback edition has been released in both English and German languages to the trade. November presents German artist Gerhard Richter s series of the same name comprised of 54 ink drawings so called due to their creation throughout the month of November in 2008. Richter assumed this method after accidentally dripping ink on to a sheet of highly absorbent paper and realising that two related images formed on the front and back. He then began to manipulate the ink in various ways changing its consistency and applying lacquer or pencil to add further detail. Reworking this method on 27 sheets of paper, he was able to create 54 images in total, presented here as facsimiles, so that both sides of each piece of paper can be viewed at the same time. These are labelled with the date that they were produced and arranged in order. The book also contains an overview of the series, featuring thumbnail

The Black Paintings is a striking catalogue published to accompany Wes Lang’s UK debut: The Black Paintings, opening on 27 September 2024 and running until 9 March 2025. The exhibition showcases the complete series of ‘The Black Paintings’, created between 2022 and 2024, now exhibited for the first time. ‘The Black Paintings’ vividly demonstrate the breadth of Lang’s inspiration, drawing from fine art heroes such as Francis Bacon, James Ensor, Francisco Goya and Alfred Munnings, as well as the kitsch imagery of his childhood. Lang masterfully blends these influences to create his distinctive and deeply personal style. Unique otherworldly characters – skeletons and disembodied skulls – are set against dark and obscured backgrounds or lush landscapes, creating story-like compositions that take on an unexpected liveliness. Lang’s works on paper, included in this catalogue, feature these same characters, but set against the blank white space of the page, embedded in intricately inscribed scenes with playful expressions and phrases that echo Taoist philosophy, reflecting the spiritual beliefs which drive Lang’s practice. Published in association with Newport Street Gallery, The Black Paintings catalogue features stunning reproductions of 96 paintings and 96 drawings, along with detailed shots of the works and striking visuals of Lang at work in his studio.

The Civilisation Paintings is a striking catalogue published to accompany the eponymous exhibition at Phillips, London. Commencing on 5 August and showing until 2 September 2024, the exhibition marks the first time Damien Hirst’s new series ‘The Civilisation Paintings’ will be on display. ‘The Civilisation Paintings’ are striking oil paintings that vividly capture the complexities and beauty of modern urban landscapes. Vibrant trees and flowers weave through the scenes, serving as poignant reminders of nature’s resilience amidst human development. Inspired by the Impressionists, Hirst infuses the series with deep emotion, which is compellingly contrasted by his use of AI tools, showcasing his ongoing fascination with science and technology. This beautifully designed catalogue features stunning full-colour reproductions of the complete series, both in their entirety and in their detail. It includes an illuminating foreword by British curator and art historian Norman Rosenthal, as well as an in-depth interview between Damien Hirst and James Fox.

How can we interpret the work of contemporary artists? First released in 2024, Focal Points is a book series of essays, articles and reviews by acclaimed curator and critic Robert Storr. Expertly edited by art historian and curator Francesca Pietropaolo, and richly illustrated, it lends Storr’s illuminating insights into an artist’s practice and way of thinking across recent decades. Brilliantly scholarly, accessible and engaging, Focal Points offers fresh interpretations of the varied territory of modern and contemporary art. This volume gathers, for the first time, Storr’s writings on the work of American painter Jasper Johns (b.1930). An artist internationally recognised for his encaustic paintings of flags, targets and maps, Johns’s ‘Neo-Dada’ works helped to formalise a shift in postwar American art, moving away from Abstract Expressionism and towards Pop art. Storr’s essays and articles provide a unique look at Johns’s practice and its continuing relevance. As Pietropaolo notes in her introduction, ‘Together, these writings … encapsulate Storr’s process of close looking at and prolonged thinking about Johns’s art, the result of a longstanding engagement that started back in the late 1960s … when he first met the artist in New York.’

The Black Drawings: Works on Paper is an elegant catalogue published to accompany Wes Lang: The Black Drawings, one of two London exhibitions marking Wes Lang’s UK debut, opening on 27 September 2024 and running until 22 November 2024 at HENI Gallery. The exhibition showcases the complete series of The Black Drawings, created between 2022 and 2024, now on display for the first time. This book is dedicated entirely to Lang’s prolific output in drawing, featuring 96 works crafted using acrylic, crayon and pencil. As George Vasey notes, the drawings mark ‘a shift in the artist’s approach.’ The dark, otherworldly characters from his paintings — skeletons and disembodied skulls — remain, but now inhabit blank white spaces, intricately inscribed with playful expressions and phrases that echo Taoist philosophy, reflecting the spiritual foundations of Lang’s practice. More than just companions to his immense paintings, the drawings stand as a significant body of work, continuing to demonstrate the breadth of Lang’s influences — ranging from fine art icons such as Francis Bacon, James Ensor, Francisco Goya, and Alfred Munnings, to the kitsch imagery of his childhood. Lang effortlessly metabolises these disparate inspirations, creating a distinctive style that transcends mediums and expresses a deeply personal artistic voice that feels cohesive rather than fragmented or frenetic.Published in association with Newport Street Gallery, The Black Drawings catalogue presents more than 100 stunning reproductions, offering yet another intimate glimpse into the richness of Lang’s artistic mind and the world he has created for himself.

Loves Moods is a beautifully produced catalogue showcasing a captivating new sub-series within Damien Hirst’s butterfly gloss paintings. Featuring all 100 works in the series, none of which have been exhibited publicly, the book offers a visual exploration of colour, emotion and connection. In each painting, two colours blend, meet or collide at the centre of the canvas. These interactions — sometimes harmonious, sometimes jarring — mirror the volatile oscillations of love. The series represents a progressive exploration of Hirst’s iconic butterfly motif, a symbol he has long associated with themes of transformation, life and death. The introductory essay discusses the historical use of butterflies in art and their significance in Hirst’s oeuvre, while also delving into how the Loves Moods paintings reflect on the art of loving, solitude and relationships.
