Inbunden, Engelska, 2005
1 230 kr
Skickas inom 5-8 vardagar
New research into the liturgy of Anglo-Saxon history, with important implications for church history in general. The essays in this volume offer the fruits of new research into the liturgical rituals of later Anglo-Saxon England. They include studies of individual rites, the production, adaptation and transmission of texts, vernacular gospeltranslations, liturgical drama and the influence of the liturgy on medical remedies, poetry and architecture; also covered are the tenth-century Benedictine Reforms and the growth of pastoral care. It will be valuable for anyoneinterested in later Anglo-Saxon England as well as medieval liturgy and church history.

Saints in English Kalendars before AD 1100
AvRebecca Rushforth
Inbunden, Engelska, 2008
779 kr
Skickas inom 5-8 vardagar
Edition of Anglo-Saxon kalendars reveals much about the history of the period. The surviving Anglo-Saxon Kalendars are not only valuable evidence for the cults of particular saints; they also help to date and localise the manuscripts in which they are found, providing important information for the palaeographer and cultural historian. This volume collates the texts of twenty-seven such kalendars, written or owned in England before 1100, into monthly tables to allow easy comparison of which saints are included and to give a sense of how rare a particular feast was. It also has an introduction to the use of kalendars in the study of Anglo-Saxon England, and a discussion and bibliography of each kalendar manuscript. An index of names allows easy discovery of variant feast days for the same saint.Dr REBECCA RUSHFORTH is Research Associate in the Department of Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic, University of Cambridge.

Martiloge in Englysshe
after the Vse of the chirche of Salisbury and as it is redde in Syon With addicyons Printed by Mynkyn de Morde in 1526 Intro & Notes

The text is a translation done into English for use in the Brigittine monastery of Syon by the priest Richard Whitford [fl. 1495-1555?], the "wretche of Syon", as he often signed himself, a well known translator and compiler of devotional texts in the vernacular. It was printed by de Worde {STC 17532] "for the edifacacyon of certayn religyous persones vnlerned, that dayly dyd rede the same martiloge in latyn, not vnderstandynge what they redde". The English text follows in essence the text represented by the Latin Syon martyrology, London, British Library, Adiditional MS 22285, but from a different, more correct copy which contained additional entries. Additional MS 22285, was devised for the male Brigittine community, but was conserved in exile by the female community until 1809, when it was sold to the Earl of Shrewsbury. The "additions" mentioned are not liturgical in character, but are somewhat careless gleanings form Jacobo de Voragine's 'Legenda Aurea', Petrus de Natalibus, 'Catalogus Sanctoreum', and a work 'Sanctilogium Salvatoris', all employed so as to furnish a devotional rather than a liturgical text in the vernacular, The reference to Salisbury {Sarum] in the title of the printed volume is explained by the fact that Syon was founded in 1415, the year after the London diocese [in which the monastery was situated] adopted the Sarum Use, and that the Brigittine custom was to follow the local use, It would seem doubtful that a uniform Sarum martyology ever really existed. In this edition readings are collated from the Latin martyrology to be found in a Sarum breviary in London, British Library, Harley MS 2785. On a broader view, the Syon martyorology followed a rather corrupt text of Usuard with numerous variations and interpolations.

Officium Ecclesiasticum Abbatum
The Evesham Book of the Abbot
AvHenrico Austin Wilson
Häftad, Engelska, 1892
592 kr
Skickas inom 10-15 vardagar
A monastic ritual intended for use in the Benedictine monastery of St Mary and St Egwin, Evesham, Worcestershire, edited from Oxford, Bodleian Library, Barlow MS 7 [SC 6419]. Although similar to other surviving manuscripts that have benn labelled as pontificals, this MS contains no episcopal offices, all rites being appropriate for celebration by the abbot or his delegate. Of the three sections, the first contains general regulations concerning the role of the abbot in liturgical and extraliturgical ceremonial, 'ordines' for catechumens, tonsure, monastic profession, admission of laybrothers, marriage, blessing of pilgrims, blessing of various vestments, and various blessings for use at the night office. The second has the special blessings relating to liturgical celebrations from 2 February to Easter, and blesings for use at the night office on 1 November. The third section has 'ordines' for the visitation of the sick and Christian burial. It was probably written c. 1300, for John de Brokehampton, abbot 1282-1316, although the first two sections appear to be copied from earlier compilations.

AvJ H Bernard,R Atkinson
Häftad, Engelska, 1898

Skickas inom 10-15 vardagar
First of 2 volumes, see [14.] The edition is based on two eleventh-century manuscripts: Dublin, Trinity College, MS 1441 [formerly E.4.2]; and one then in Dublin, Franciscan Friary, Merchant's Quay. This latter MS[Dillon A2] is now in the Franciscan Library, Killiney, County Dublin, whither it was transferred in 1946. The collections to which the MSS bear witness are antiquarian rather than liturgical compilations and probably owe their existence to the drive to safeguard cultural monuments in the aftermath of the Norse invasions. Trinity College 1441 is datable to the 11th Century, but the texts, in Irish and Latin, appear to date from the 5th to the 8th centuries. The edition is presented with extensive notes and a glossary. See Kenney n. 574; CLLA 177; BCLL, nn. 542-564, 578-591.

First of 2 vols, see [48]. Ricemarsh or Rhygyfarch the wise, son of Sulien or Sulgenius. His father was Bishop of St Davids in Wales in the years 1072-1078 and 1080-1085. Rhygyfarch himself was a teacher in the school of St Davids, actually sited at Llanbadarn Fawr, The so-called Ricemarsh Psalter [including the martyology], housed as Dublin, Trinity College MS 50, is dated by the editor to c. 1076-1081. The Psalter is Jerome's translation from the Hebrew, and although the text is not reprinted in full in this edition, a collation is given against Domenico Vallarsi's edition, Sancti Eusebii Hieronymi stridonensis presbyteri operanum tomus nonus, Antonio Berno & Giacomo Vallarsi, Verona, 1738, coll. 1159ff, and Paul Anton de Lagarde, Psalterium iuxta Hebraeos Hieronymi, Teubner, Leipzig, 1874. The Martyology us an abbreviated recension of the Hieronymian martyrology and is close to the redaction in the Codex Epternacensis. The poem "The Lament of Ricemarch" is printed in an appendix taken from London, British Library, Cotton MS Faustina C.I., fol. 66. The wqhole edition is abundantly furnished with notes. See Kenney, n. 508; BCLL, nn. 31, 32, 123.

The MS collection, which it must be admitted is poorly titled in English for the Bradshaw edition, dates from 11th-12th century and is evidently from an episcopal city of some size in Northern Italy [Brescia?], but the exact location is elusive. Legible are ff. 5-62, which contain ordines for the baptism of children in danger of death, for the scrutinies [very extensive rites], and the blessing of the fonts, ad paenitentiam dando, of the sick, the blessing of sackcloth and ashes, and the blessing or exorcism of water and salt. The edition has a full introduction and indexes.

Third of 6 volumes. The project to edit the Hyde Breviary was a considerable one that was to occupy the HBS for a deczde. Hyde Abbey hadbeen founded alongside New Minster, Winchester un 965 by St Ethelwold [c. 908-984], Bishop if Winchester, and a former Abbot of Abingdon, with Abingdon Monks. In 1110 the community moved from its cramped premises to Hyde Meadow, just outside the city walls. The breviary MSS edited were most probably written during thre abbacy of Symon de Kanings [1292-1304]. The Hyde Breviary is one of a small number of surviving MS witneses to the form of the English Benedictine breviary, supplemented by what Tolhurst thought was a single surviving volume of a 1528 printed breviary or portiforium of Abingdon [pars aestivalis, Cambridge, Emmanuel College; there is in fact a full copy at Exeter College, Oxford; STC 15792]. The Hyde relics were here cosen as the most typical and informative. The Rawlinson and Gough MSS [SC 15842, 18338] were written by different scribes but on virtuallly indistinguishable vellum and with illuminations from the same hand. Here they are collated with survivg witnesses to the English Benedictine breviary of the period: yhe breviaries of Durham Cathedral Priory [London, British Library, Harley MSS 4664, c.1270], Ely Cathedral Priory [Cambridge University Library, Ii.4.20 [c. 1275], Muchelny Abbey, Somerset [London, British Library, Additional 43405-43506, c. 1280].1 The only other non-fragmentary breviary is that of Barttle Abbey in Sussex [Cambridge, Trinity College, MS O.7.31, c. 1500], but this is probably an importation from Marmoutier, and hence is not collated here.

The Henry Bradshaw Society's policy of presenting integral editions of rare liturgical manuscripts is a reflection of the fact that, before the invention of printing, service books varied widely from country to country, from church to church, and even from individual book to individual book, with the result that surviving medieval liturgical manuscripts are usually unique entities which can profitably be studies as a reflection of the local circumstances (and frequently of the particular individuals) which produced them. This is especially true in the case of private prayerbooks, where each manuscript embodies the interests and spiritual concerns of the patron who commissioned it or the scribe who compiled and copies it. The present edition of 'Ælfwine's Prayerbook' (which was originally produced as a doctoral dissertation under the supervision of Professor Helmut Gneuss, one of the Society's distinguishedVice-Presidents), by Beate Günzel, is a splendid manifestation of the intellectual and spiritual interests of a dean who serves the community of the New Minster in Winchester during the first half of the eleventh century, and hence of the clear light which liturgical manuscripts can shed on the literary culture of later Anglo-Saxon England. It was is issued to members for the year 1992.

Fourth of 4 vols, [see 37, 38, and 63]. There is a misprint in the title, which should refer to Exeter MS 3518, a superior text of the Exeter Martyrology to Cambridge, Corpus Christi College, MS 93, which was employed earlier by Canon Dalton [see KerMM, II, p. 828]. The present volume gives a collation of variants against HBS [38] pp. 371-459, plus a discussion of these. The bulk of the present volume, pp. 44-255, consists of indexes, compiled by Christopher William Surrey.

This volume, long delayed in its publication, furnishes an edition of two codexes discovered in 1910 by Dom Germain Morin. Bernhard Bischoff assigned the first of them [A] to the work of the bishop's scriptorium at Freising under the episcopate of either Hitto [811-836] or Erchambert [836-854], and the second [B] to the same origin, but around the year 900. Benedictiional A [ff. 1-14] contains 29 ans Benedictional B [ff. 15v-87v] 159 blessings of the episcopal type now introduced as Benedictiones Sollemnes into the Roman Rite. Like their modern cousins, many blessings on Clm 6430 are quadripartite, though a good number have more numerous members. A loose printed sheet addressed to members by Francis Wormald, Chairman of Council, spoke of the grave difficulties and delays that had attended publication, and warned that it had not been possible to take account of a study and partial edition of Benedictional A by Walter Durig, "Das Benedictionale Friburgense vetus", published in Archiv fur Liturgiewissenschaft 4 [1956] 223-244.

A translation and study of Durham Cathedral Library MS A. IV. 19, a book of collects for the Divine Office, a part of the service-books of monk or priest in Anglo-Saxon England.Few liturgical historians are aware that a book of collects for theDivine Office formed part of the service-books owned by a monk orpriest in Anglo-Saxon England. The Durham Collectar, misnamed the`Durham Ritual'and tentatively dated to the tenth century, is the earliest collectar to have survived in England. Where did it come from, and how was it used? To answer the first, a new edition of the Latintext is presented in this volume, with extensive collationtablesshowing at a glance the most influential liturgical sources. In theintroduction, the function of the collectar is discussed.

Most of these litanies, taken from nearly fifty manuscripts written or owned in Anglo-Saxon England, have never previously been printed. The texts of the litanies provide an indispensable resource for scholars seeking to understand the spirituality of Anglo-Saxon England, to localise the manuscript in which the litanies are contained, and to trace the development and diffusion of eary medieval saints' cults. The volume is accompanied by comprehensive indices of all the saints named in the litanies here printed, and of all the liturgical forms of prayer which they contain. It also includes an extensive introduction which traces the origin and development of this particular form of prayer in Anglo-Saxon England.MICHAEL LAPIDGEis Professor of Anglo-Saxon, University of Cambridge.

The Egbert Pontifical (Paris, BN lat. 10575) and the Sidney Sussex Pontifical (Cambridge, Sidney Sussex College 100) cast light on the English church in the 10th century. This book presents editions of two of the best known Anglo-Saxon pontificals, the so-called `Egbert Pontifical' (Paris, BN lat. 10575) and the `Sidney Sussex Pontifical' (Cambridge, Sidney Sussex College 100). The pontifical was abishop's book which contained the various ceremonies which ony a bishop could perform: consecration of a church or cemetary, consecration of all orders of clergy and of abbots and abbesses, and the coronation of a king. The various pontifical services in these two manuscripts, therefore, help to illustrate the nature of these solemn ceremonies in Anglo-Saxon England, and are a valuable index of the state of the English chuch in the 10th century.

Prayer book probably written by and for women at Nunnaminster, WinchesterThe editor maintains the opinion that these two British Library manuscripts were formerly one. The Cotton Galba MS was badly burned and damaged by water in a fire at Ashburnham House on 23 October 1731. The probable provenance is Winchester in the first half of the 11th century, the book being an informal devotional collection written for use at Nunnaminster, a monastery of women with a sizeable community of chaplains, c. 1029-1043. Some 10-15% of the text is in Old English, but even here is close to Latin models. The edition has multiple indexes and appendices.

This anonymous Commentary is printed from Troyes, Bibl. munic. 658, a manuscript written at Clairvaux in the late 12th century. It is well known that St Bernard in 1147 revised the monastic hymnal for the use of his Cistercian monks; the anonymous Explanatio is primary evidence for the content of Bernard's hymnal. It is also an invaluable index of Cistercian spirituality in the late 12th century, and provides an index of the range of reading of a Cistercianscholar of that time.

English Saints in the Medieval Liturgies of Scandinavian Churches

Evidence of the spread of the cults of English saints in medieval Scandinavia is revealed by detailed detective work in fragmentary manuscripts. The process of Christianising the Scandinavian countries in the tenth to the thirteenth centuries was spearheaded in the earliest phases by missionaries from Anglo-Saxon England. It is likely that such missionaries took with themthe books that would have been essential for church services - Bibles, Gospel-books, Psalters, Breviaries - along with saints' relics, thus introducing the cults of the saints venerated at the time in England. A remarkable quantity of mainly fragmentary manuscripts have survived from this activity and from Scandinavia manuscripts produced in imitation of the imports. Almost all of them were gathered together at the Reformation as redundant and used mainlyto provide covers and bindings for provincial accounts from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries; they are preserved largely in the National Archives in Copenhagen, Helsinki, Oslo and Stockholm. Materials for some seventy-fourEnglish saints are recorded in this volume, giving an idea of the extent of their presence in the liturgies of medieval Scandinavia. They include all occurrences of the saints in surviving liturgical calendars, martyrologies, missals, breviaries, etc; where the texts are not otherwise attested, they are reproduced in full. It will be an essential point of reference for all scholars working on the English saints and on the spread of Christianity in the middle ages.

John Wickham Legg had copied Magdalene in or before 1894 and later H.A. Wilson made another transcript, but it was never published. The Collins edition has reference also to the printed liturgical editions of 1697 and 1908.

The MSS, from the abbey of Bec (Le Bec-Hellouin), written c. 1265-1272 is not strictly a missal, since it lacks an ordo missae and the canon, but in other respects it is close to a missale plenum in its contents, though it includes all the chants. It may have been a precentor's book, but equally well may have been designed for use of the altar. The plainchant melodies are not reproduced here. The English interest of Bec, home to Lanfranc and Anselm, archbishops of Canterbury, and with other strong cross-channel connections, is obvious.

Liturgical rites developed at Salisbury Cathedral and used from the late eleventh century until the English Reformation. In effect the edition is of the Ritual of the Sarum Use. The editor set out to replace the at points faulty and misleading appendix `Abbreviated Reprint of the Sarum Manual' which W.G. Henderson added to his edition of the York Manual and Processional for the Surtees Society (Manuale et Processionale ad usum insignis Ecclesiae Eboracensis, Durham 1875. In its final form the Manual is a book that has effectively been taken over by secular commercial publishers, which explains some of the curiosities it contains.

The earliest surviving example of a primitive breviaryThe second volume includes the private prayers (some of which are in Old English), and contains a brief introduction and full indices. It concludes with a separate work issued by the Plainsong and Mediaeval Music Society: Pre-Conquest Antiphons from the Portiforium of Saint Wulfstan, Edited by Dom Anselm Hughes, Nashdom Abbey, Plainsong and Mediaeval Music Society, [London], 1958. This small work gives the music of 22 antiphons whose words are found in Corpus Christi manuscript 391, drawing upon pre-Conquest sources. Combined with material available in existing published editions this permits an almost complete reconstruction of the music of the Portiforium of St Wulfstan.

Cambridge, Corpus Christi College 391, a Worcester manuscript of the second half of the 11th century, is the earliest surviving example of a `primitive' breviary, that is, a book for the Office containing calendar, psalter, canticles, litany, hymnal, collectar (full lists of incipits of antiphons and hymns) and private prayers; the manuscript quite possibly belonged to Wulstan II, bishop of Worcester 1062-95. Vol. II includes the private prayers (some of which are in Old English), and contains a brief introduction and full indices.

English Kalendars before A.D. 1100contains full editionf of twenty Anglo-Saxon liturgical Kalendars. Because it was the nature of each Church's kalendar to reflect the individual feasts and saints which were venerated at that church, kalendars are invariably the most precious witnesses to the worship of individual Anglo-Saxon churches. Furthermore, because the individual feasts and saints often permit the localisation of manuscript-kalendars, and because these kalendars are usually accompanied by computistical tables which permit them to be dated, they are the bedrock upon which the dating and localisation of all Anglo-Saxon manuscripts is based. And because they usually attracted the recording of obits of important men and women in their margins, kalendars are an important source of information for historians.

Bobbio Missal

The Bobbio Missal is one of the most important and interesting liturgical books surviving from the early middle ages. It is the best known example of the `Gallican' type of missal, attesting therefore to the distinctive liturgicalpractices which were widespread in Merovingian and Frankish churches during the seventh and eighth centuries, before these began to tbe replaced by the Roman practices including use of `Gregorian' missals in various forms duringthe period of Charlemagne's reforms. In the opinion of modern palaeographers, the Bobbio Missal was written somewhere in northern Italy in the mid-eighth century. Although it was long regarded as a witness to Irish liturgical practice, it is now considered as essentially Gallican, but incorporating various prayers of Gelasian origin. Palaeographically the manuscript (now Paris, Bibliotheque Nationale, lat. 13246) is of great interest, being written in anidiosyncratic mixture of uncial and minuscule, by an Italian scribe neither literate nor well-trained.
