Margiad Evans (1909 - 1958), essayist, memoirist, novelist and poet, was born in Uxbridge but got her inspiration from the Herefordshire Welsh Border country. First published in 1932 her writing career was curtailed in 1950 when a previously asymptomatic brain tumour induced an epileptic response whose effects became increasingly intrusive and serious over the last eight years of her life. She died at the age of 49. A Ray of Darkness, a unique account of her epilepsy, was first published in 1952 when it was hailed as a significant contribution to the clinical study of epilepsy by eminent neurologists. Its reprint now by Honno follows the publication, last year, of her final autobiographical work The Nightingale Silenced. It remains one of very few accounts of epilepsy written by a sufferer of this serious (but surprisingly common) disease.

As the Enlightenment dawns, Hannah Sentance finds herself increasingly disturbed by her husband Walter's unyielding desire to transform the land around their estate into an elite Gentleman's Park. Local people will be evicted, an old way of life lost and an ancient oak tree felled. A symbol of resistance, wildness and a young woman's love affair with nature, the tree embodies Hannah's struggle for a way of belonging. But how can she - and it - survive?

Hilarious, shocking and sad, Crystal Jeans' latest novel is set in Cardiff. Each chapter is narrated by different characters linked by the street on which most of them live and the appearance in them all (to greater or lesser extent) of the title character the alcoholic vagrant who for one of the neighbours is an unusual subject of desire. Set in various homes, streets and parks, and a nearby care home for the demented elderly the story lines are darkly humorous and occasionally rude and crude, this is an unputdownable journey into the underside of contemporary Wales.

Dew On The Grass, first published in 1934, was Eiluned Lewis' first novel and immediately enjoyed both popular success and critical acclaim. A semi-autobiographical account of childhood in rural Montgomeryshire in the early years of the twentieth century, Lewis' novel focuses on Lucy, nine years old, dreamy, accident-prone and acutely alive to the world around her. Lewis' prose is a delight: sensuous, evocative and nostalgic. Here is a book which distils all the joys and agonies of childhood and seems to speak directly to us all of our own lost selves.

Margiad Evans (1909 - 1958), essayist, memoirist, novelist and poet, was born in Uxbridge but got her inspiration from the Herefordshire Welsh Border country. First published in 1932 her writing career was curtailed in 1950 when a previously asymptomatic brain tumour induced an epileptic response whose effects became increasingly serious over the last years of her life. This book of three unpublished works spans that last period, and sheds light on the cruel fate which befell this talented young author and robbed us of 'one of the finest prose writers in English' of the 20th century.

Ida loses her job and her parents in the space of a few weeks and, thrown completely off course, she sets off to Wales to the house her father has left her. Weaving together themes of gender, liberty, power and transgression, Ann Julia Hatton's Cambrian Pictures; or, Every One Has Errors (1810) is a comedy of manners and morals with serious intent. Featuring lyrical passages of description and sharply-observed domestic scenes, Cambrian Pictures is also stylistically interesting as a vehicle for poetry - in quotation and Hatton's own. Drawing on domestic travel writing and the emergence of the Gothic, Cambrian Pictures is one of the strongest Welsh-set novels of the Romantic period.
