John Logie Baird, Britain's foremost television pioneer, experimented with video recording onto gramophone discs in the late 1920s. Though unsuccessful at the time, his experiments resulted in several videodiscs, some 25 years before the videotape recorder became practical. These videodiscs - called Phonovision - remained neglected over the decades, considered by experts as unplayable. In the early 1980s, the author sought out and restored the surviving Phonovision discs. Using computer-based techniques in an investigation reminiscent of an archaeological dig, the author has not only revealed the images on the discs but also uncovered details of how the recordings were made. The Phonovision discs have now become recognised as one of Baird's most important legacies. In 1996 and 1998, amateur 'off-air' recordings of the BBC's 30-line Television Service (1932-35) were found, giving us our first view of what viewers were then watching. The author's restoration overturns established views on mechanically scanned television, providing us today with a true measure of Britain's heritage of television programme-making before electronic television. As well as helping to explain a poorly understood and complex period in television's history, this unique book, heavily illustrated with previously unpublished or rarely-seen historic photographs restored by the author, sheds light on the achievements of Baird, the development of video recording and the definition and invention of television itself.

From the first notions of 'seeing by electricity' in 1878, through the period of the first demonstration of rudimentary television in 1926 and up to 1940, when war brought the advance of the technology to a temporary halt, the development of television gathered about it a tremendous history. Following the discovery of the photo-conductive effect, numerous schemes for television were suggested but it was in the wake of Baird's early demonstrations that real industrial interest developed and the pace of progress increased. Much research and development work was undertaken in the UK, the US, Germany and France. By 1936 television technology had advanced to the point where high definition broadcasting was realistic. This meticulous and deeply researched book presents a balanced and thorough international history of television from 1878 to 1940, considering the factors - technical, commercial and social - that influenced and led to the establishment of public services in many countries. Highly illustrated throughout, this is a major book in the study of history of science, technology and media.

With the expansion of HV DC transmission throughout the world, and the increasing numbers of international interconnections, few power systems can continue to escape the effect of this technology in their planning and operation. The primary subject of this book is the incorporation of AC-DC converters and DC transmission in power system analysis. However, the concepts and methods described are also applicable to the FACTS (flexible AC transmission systems) technology. As well as conventional power flows, faults and stability, the book describes the simulation of power system steady-state waveform distortion and transient behaviour. The modelling of power electronic devices in electromagnetic transient programs is given prominence, as these programs have become the 'workhorse' of power system design. This graduate-level text should be of interest to practising engineers and researchers involved in the solution of modern power system problems. It will also be a useful reference for advanced electrical engine ering students.

There has been unprecedented development in data communications and services since the first edition of this book was published in 1986. In less than a decade the technology has advanced beyond all recognition and the first edition is now really no more than an interesting historical record. The second edition, published in 1989, reflected some of these developments and introduced the then emerging proposals for an integrated services digital network (ISDN). Since that date ISDN has become a fact and has already begun to be superseded by proposals and standards for a broadband ISDN (B-ISDN), offering greatly enhanced and flexible data rates over a public network based mainly on optical fibre transmission. Optical fibre technology is also being used in wide-area private digital networks and for high-capacity internetworking operations. This third edition has new chapters on broadband ISDN, wide-area internetworking and second generation (broadband) LANs and MANs. The chapters from the second edition on data services over cellular and broadcast radio have been retained and updated. The chapter on standards and interfaces has needed to be completely revised. The final chapter gives a network user's view of the likely scenario for the development of image networks in the foreseeable future. On the back cover of the second edition I commented that what four years ago appeared as simply speculation was now a reality. The same is true for this third edition. If there should be a fourth edition in another four years time, we should not be surprised to find that duplex visual image communication, as opposed to broadcast TV, has become an accepted part of our way of life.

Transport in Condensed Matter offers a clear and comprehensive introduction to the principles that govern how charge and spin move through condensed-matter systems. The book opens with linear response theory, Green's functions, and the Boltzmann transport equation, essential tools for understanding electronic behaviour in solids. It then develops perturbation theory and diagrammatic methods, followed by a detailed treatment of impurity scattering, a crucial but often neglected ingredient in realistic transport calculations.A major strength of the book is its coverage of contemporary themes, including topological transport and the integer and anomalous quantum Hall effects, transport in non-Hermitian systems and magnon transport, spanning ferromagnets, antiferromagnets, noncollinear orders, and skyrmion-based phenomena. Additional chapters introduce the memory-function formalism and the emerging field of electron hydrodynamics using the Navier-Stokes equation.Key features include: A self-contained introduction to many-body transport methods.Clear derivations of all major equations and results.Coverage of modern research topics such as non-Hermitian transport, topological magnons, nonlinear Hall effects, and strange metals.Connects traditional frameworks with emerging directions in modern condensed-matter physics.Appendices, which review essential background concepts, making the text suitable for readers transitioning into the field.Suitable for both researchers and graduate students, the book offers a unified overview of transport phenomena in electronic and magnetic systems, connecting many-body techniques with some of the most active areas in modern condensed matter physics and quantum materials.

The world is moving into an era of unprecedented transformation driven by automation and intelligent systems. This future hinges not just on artificial intelligence and machine learning's intelligence but also - fundamentally - on autonomous systems' ability to know where they are and how they are moving with precision, dependably, and continuously. Navigation is the centre of all autonomous platforms. Navigation is that foundational ability whereby a system can be aware of where it is, where it must go, and how to get there safely. Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) not only enable navigation but also synchronization of telecommunications networks, electricity distribution and financial transactions, and constitute a central infrastructure of the digital age.GNSS-Enabled Autonomous Navigation: Principles, technologies and challenges begins with an exposition of GNSS fundamentals, including satellite positioning concepts, signal structures, error sources, and system quality indicators - accuracy, integrity, continuity, and availability. It then presents an introduction to the augmentation and improvement methods that enhance GNSS capabilities to meet requirements for autonomous applications. The unifying theme of this book is the application of GNSS in the development of autonomous systems in various spheres. Chapters cover the role of GNSS in the development of autonomous ground vehicles, improving maritime navigation, aviation systems, robotics, and agricultural technology.By bringing together theory and vision for the future, the book is aiming to provide researchers, engineers, and students with a comprehensive understanding of how GNSS is the key to autonomous navigation system development. The book brings to fore that the path towards full autonomy will be based on the complete convergence of navigation, communication, and intelligent decision-making technologies.

Interest in the applications of ultrawideband (UWB) radar systems is increasing rapidly all over the world. This is evident from the number of monographs recently published on the subject and from the many papers presented at international conferences on the general problems involved in UWB radar and on its promising new applications. Conventional (classical) methods seem to have exhausted their potential and studies in the field are undergoing a profound change. This book presents some of the novel approaches to radar system analysis now being investigated.A good source of information on UWB signals is their structural analysis in the time domain. This allows a greater understanding of the specific features of UWB radar systems, such as the properties of receiving and transmitting antennas, and various characteristics of near- and far-range target scattering fields. It is shown how the systematic application of numerical procedures can provide new results in the evaluation of UWB radar target responses. The authors do not try to cover all of the possible solutions to the problem of multidimensional representation of target responses; rather they aim to give a general understanding of the techniques of confluent analysis, computer holography and adaptive synthesis of antenna apertures. These methods have great potential for solving conventional radar problems in target detection and recognition, and they are sure to stimulate the use of UWB signals in many fields such as subsurface probing and ecological monitoring.

Charles Wheatstone began his life-long involvement with electrical engineering in the days when it was still at the stage of 'philosophical toys', yet he had a vision of telecommunications that could deliver printed messages around the world. With W.E. Cooke he developed the first practical electric telegraph. The problems of operating telegraphs over long distances led him into the field of electrical measurements.Wheatstone was a major figure in Victorian science, making contributions in the fields of optics and acoustics as well as electrical engineering. He had an encyclopaedic knowledge of the scientific literature in several languages, and made connections which benefited not only his own work but also that of others. His research aided the development of the new King's College London into a centre of scientific excellence. He invented the concertina and the stereoscope, both very popular in the nineteenth century. He is usually remembered for the Wheatstone Bridge, which he did not invent but publicised in the course of a lecture on measurements. His early attempts to measure the speed of an electric current were inconclusive, but his later studies of signals in submarine cables contributed to the understanding of the effect of capacitance and inductance in cables. He made electric motors, including a linear motor. In his lifetime there was insufficient electric power to exploit them, but his self-excited generator indicated the way ahead. This fascinating biography celebrates the bicentenary of Wheatstone's birth, and draws on information about the family business as well as letters, including correspondence with Cooke and Faraday, which were not available for the first edition, published by HMSO for the Science Museum in 1975.

The electrostatic precipitator remains one of the most cost-effective means of controlling the emission of particulates from most industrial processes, including pollution from power stations. The author reviews the basic theory and operation of precipitators, the characteristics of gas and particulates that impact on design and operation, and the design of high- and mains-frequency rectification equipment. Chapters also cover performance monitoring and enhancement, and fault detection. The author shows how recent high-power, fast switching equipment has enabled new high-frequency energisation equipment to be introduced, which further improves precipitator performance and in turn reduces emissions and the level of pollution. As environmental standards and regulations are progressively tightened, improvements in pollution control technology such as electrostatic precipitators are vital for the continued operation of coal- and biomass-burning power plants, steelworks and other energy-intensive boilers and related industrial processes. The book should help the professional engineer and non-specialist to assess the potential design and operation of electrostatic precipitators and how to govern and control performance. It will be of particular relevance to electrical engineers, process engineers and those in the environmental/pollution control fields.

The business of telecommunications is undergoing a period of change driven by changes in regulation, increasing demands for services and the development of new access technologies. The market structure of telecommunications is evolving rapidly as new and existing players strive to compete in an increasingly volatile market, while the advent of new data services is placing greater demands on the network as operators strive to offer new broadband services. Underpinning much of this change is the access technology itself, not only in the transitional form of copper twisted pairs, but also increasingly through the use of new fibre, radio and copper systems. The dominant cost of most telecommunication networks is the access network itself, which typically can demand up to 80% of the total investment required. This book presents an overview of the access network and discusses the technologies that are available. It begins with an introductory chapter defining terms and technologies and goes on to discuss each technology in turn, not only from a technology viewpoint but with a view on how it might be best deployed. Chapters are also included on planning systems, network management, DSL, fibre access networks, optical access networks, fixed wireless access, broadband, wireless LANs, UMTS, and SDH in the access network.

Radio Man tells the story of C.O. Stanley, the unconventional Irishman who acquired Pye Radio at the beginning of the broadcasting age. Although he started with little experience and even less money, he was to make Pye a major player in the British electronics industry - only to crash it spectacularly forty years later. From the romance of early radio to the birth of the mobile, Stanley and Pye were players in some of the key moments of twentieth century Britain. His obsession with the infant medium of television allowed Pye to provide the equipment that put radar into planes in time for the Battle of Britain. His energy also drove Pye's pioneering work on the proximity fuse - work that would revolutionise antiaircraft warfare - and the company's manufacture of the war's most successful army radios. In the 1950s Stanley led the offensive against the BBC's monopoly of television in a battle that split the British establishment. When his son, John, took Pye into mobile radio Stanley fought and defeated the bureaucrats who then controlled Britain's airwaves.Stanley's loss of Pye in 1966 illustrated British industry's inability to withstand foreign competition. It also brought tragedy. Stanley himself escaped with honour more or less intact, but left his son to face public humiliation on his own. This revealing and meticulously researched text is written within the broad context of the political, technological and business changes of the time, and shows how a very ambitious businessman was brought down by the qualities that made him so successful.

Engineering companies and other organizations face many serious challenges in the 21st Century. One that is now becoming widely recognized is the loss of corporate knowledge through staff turnover, whether it is natural or forced through downsizing or delayering. A company's store of knowledge and expertise is an asset built up through the learning and experience of its employees. In this book the authors show that such loss of experience and knowledge can substantially erode corporate culture and impact upon a company's ability to develop and reinvent itself in response to its market. The concentration is on process, culture, structure and leadership, to assist engineering organizations in managing their valuable knowledge resources and the people who possess them. It provides effective methodologies to devise solutions to the real challenges faced by engineering managers today.Illustrated with scenarios and practical examples, which will be familiar to engineers worldwide, this book represents great value to all those in engineering management practice. In addition, as management increasingly appears within the syllabus of engineering courses, it will interest engineering students preparing for careers in industry, as well as their educators.
