Discover the timeless beauty of Kawase Hasui, the master of shin hanga, in this stunning new book, featuring his most breathtaking woodblock prints and expert insights into his legacy. Kawase Hasui (1883–1957) was one of the most important and prolific Japanese printmakers of the 20th century. He was one of the main creators of the shin hanga (‘new prints’) movement, whose artists depicted traditional subjects in a style influenced by Western painting. Shin hanga prints are harmoniously balanced designs, printed on the highest quality paper using the finest pigments, and in small editions. They are the fruit of a traditional yet successful collaboration between artist, publisher, block cutter and printer and have become increasingly popular among collectors of Japanese prints in the last decade. Hasui began his artistic career studying Japanese painting. However, soon after seeing Shinsui’s Eight Views of Lake Biwa series, Hasui turned to woodblock printing in 1919. Shozaburo Watanabe was the first to recognize his artistic genius, and Hasui Kawase soon became the most popular artist working for this prestigious publisher. He produced nearly a thousand woodcuts in a career that spanned almost forty years. Towards the end of his life, the Japanese government recognized him as a ‘Living National Treasure’ for his contribution to Japanese culture.

Between the twilight years of the Tokugawa shogunate (1603–1867) and the end of the Meiji Era (1868–1912) that followed it, photography offered a unique insight into the rapid transformation of Japan from an isolated, feudal society to a modern, industrialized state. In the four decades that followed the opening of the country in 1853, the camera evolved from an imported novelty to a familiar witness of Japanese daily life. Operating from the Treaty Ports of Yokohama and elsewhere, early practitioners of photography plied an often precarious trade in images of Japan and laid the foundations of what would soon become a highly competitive industry with a global reach. Whether cherished as souvenirs of an exotic land of fond imagination or curated as visual documents of a fast-changing society, these images by foreign and Japanese photographers, often packaged in exquisitely produced albums, enjoyed a wide circulation abroad and played an important role in influencing perceptions of Japan in the West well into the early 20th century. Drawing from an extensive private collection assembled over many years, this book presents a unique selection of 19th century photographs of Japan, many of which are published here for the first time.

Women and men – strong, proud, tragic or beautiful – from the heyday (1765–1865) of Japanese printmaking are this book’s subject. It seeks to dig below the surface of the prints to describe the often subtle iconography employed in these masterful creations by the most famous artists of their time. It begins with Suzuki Harunobu’s subdued and introverted scenes of women seated on verandas. The book then moves on to the spectacular ‘big face’ (okubi-e) portraits of prostitutes and Kabuki actors by artists like Kitagawa Utamaro, Toshusai Sharaku and Utagawa Kunimasa. Frail ‘streetwalkers’, forced by circumstance into the lowest ranks of prostitution, are transformed into elegant beauties, obscuring their tragic existence. The spectacle of heroes from Japan’s rich mythological and pseudo-historical past crowd the printed sheet. Stern-faced actors drawn by the confident hands of Utagawa Toyokuni and his pupil Kunisada demonstrate the economy of line and powerful expression of the woodblock medium. Each print is explored in the finest detail in order to explain the riddles of Ukiyo-e: the intriguing and captivating mode of visual expression that would have such a profound influence on Western art.

We live in a single-use society, where fashion is fast, disposability is the norm and it is easier to replace than to repair. We don't need to mend things anymore – and yet we do. What is it about Homo faber – man the maker – that cannot resist fixing what is broken? As we start to decouple from the linear take-make-waste model that has dominated Western economies since the Industrial Revolution and seek something more circular, an enquiry into what mending means has never been more urgent. With a foreword by The Repair Shop’s Jay Blades, this new book by craft and circularity advocate Katie Treggiden celebrates 25 artists, curators, designers and makers who have rejected the allure of the fast, disposable and easy in favor of the patina of use, the stories of age and the longevity of care and repair. Accompanying these profiles, six in-depth essays explore the societal, cultural and environmental roles of mending in a throwaway world.

A fascinating journey through the self-reflexive and conceptually-inflected documentary photography of the 20th century, with plenty of surprises alongside the well-known landmarks. Twenty years ago, at the Basel Art Fair, Astrid Ullens bought a photograph by Brancusi, more or less on the spur of the moment. This proved to be the first step in the formation of an impressive collection that today comprises more than 5,000 photographs, some by such renowned figures as Lewis Baltz, Lee Friedlander, Helen Levitt and Walker Evans, others by young photographers like Francesco Neri, Georges Senga, Massao Mascaro and Tarrah Krajnak. This substantial volume provides an excellent introduction to the collection of Ullens' Fondation A Stichting, with more than 100 photographers plentifully represented in no fewer than 2,000 images. In doing so, it takes the reader on a fascinating journey through the self-reflexive and conceptually-inflected documentary photography of the 20th century, with plenty of surprises alongside the well-known landmarks. It also offers a portrait of a cohort of photographers who still, in one way or another, have sought to give the viewer a better understanding of the world, of nature, mankind, society, and photography itself. As well as the images and brief entries on each photographer, the book includes several essays by scholars and others, among them curator Urs Stahel, author and journalist Guy Duyplat, and photographers Nicholas Nixon, Judith Joy Ross and Jim Goldberg. An indispensable volume for all lovers of photography, SAGA is to be published to coincide with the exhibition When Images Learn To Speak at Les Rencontres d'Arles in the summer of 2024.

A definitive new monograph on Ray K. Metzker, showcasing his innovative approach to urban photography and mastery of light and form Going against the grain of conventional street photography or humanist photography—both too traditional for his bold creative vision—Ray K. Metzker (1931–2014) uniquely appropriated urban space through its vertical and horizontal lines, with complete mastery of light. Long underrated, his work has previously only been featured in about a handful publications, all of which are now out of print. This new monograph, bringing together approximately 150 photographs, offers a fresh perspective on Metzker’s work as well as a (re)discovery of the American photographer, who developed an emotional affinity early on with the cities of Chicago and Philadelphia. His photography broke free from narrative aesthetic conventions, elevating monochrome photography to new heights.

The complete resource on Japanese woodblock printing Japanese woodblock prints, exemplified by iconic works such as Hokusai’s Great Wave, Utamaro’s portraits of beauties, Hiroshige’s Heavy Rain on Ohashi Bridge, and Kuniyoshi’s tattooed warriors, represent one of the most influential art forms in history. While the artists behind these masterpieces are celebrated worldwide, the many others who played crucial roles in their creation, style, and distribution have long remained overlooked. Publishers were the driving force behind the highly commercial world of Japanese printmaking. They evaluated market demand, commissioned designs from artists, and assumed the financial risks of production. Once a design was completed, the publisher coordinated every step of the process: obtaining censor approval, hiring block carvers and printers, and overseeing the distribution of prints to specific audiences. The Japanese Woodblock Prints Companion explores this collaborative production process and highlights the indispensable contributions of publishers, carvers, and printers—without whom many celebrated works, later admired by Western artists such as Monet, Van Gogh, and Toulouse-Lautrec, would never have existed. Andreas Marks’ book profiles more than 1,900 publishers and nearly 900 carvers and printers, includes publication lists for almost 1,000 artists, and reproduces thousands of publisher, carver, and printer seals, covering a period from the 1640s to the 1990s. Each entry documents places of operation, active periods, clientele, and issued print series, offering insight into professional status, favored collaborations, and distinctive working strategies. Lists of censor and collector seals further enrich the reference. With over 1,000 pages of detailed information, this companion is an essential resource for scholars and collectors and a comprehensive tribute to the often-unsung figures who shaped the history of Japanese woodblock prints.

Between the Symbolist fin de siècle and the avant-garde, Léon Spilliaert (1881–1946) remained a singular outsider. Like James Ensor, with whom he shared Ostend, irony, and a spirit of non-conformism, he viewed the world differently. Spilliaert developed a unique and spiritual visual language through pastel and gouache, purified fields of colour, and elegant lines. His celebrated seascapes, deserted beaches, empty interiors, and solitary figures evoke an atmosphere of mystery and alienation. This richly illustrated book brings his oeuvre vividly back to life. Anne Adriaens-Pannier discusses drawings and paintings while also highlighting illustrations and lithographs. Spilliaert emerges as a fascinating link between the major artistic movements of his time. The most comprehensive book on Léon Spilliaert.

Pieter Vermeersch (Belgium, 1973) is well-known for his gradual wall paintings that create powerful visual experiences. Vermeersch combines painting with architecture and works on a variety of surfaces such as canvas, marble and photographs. Beyond the traditional borders of the canvas, his investigations result in large-scale spatial interventions that manipulate the space. Time, color and space are the building blocks of his oeuvre: these concepts lie at the foundation of his gradual murals and architectural interventions. Variations presents a complete survey of Vermeersch's work and includes a broad selection of painted works (on canvas, stone, photographs and walls), installations and sketches. Each signature of the book is dedicated to a particular work or aspect of Vermeersch's oeuvre. There are seven different cover versions of the book, each printed in a different color variation defined by the artist. Beautifully designed by the Dutch design studio Mevis & van Deursen, edited by Moritz Küng and with texts by François Piron, Kersten Geers and Dieter Roelstraete.

In September 1939, thousands of German soldiers were turned loose on Poland. In 1940, they descended on Holland, Belgium and France. In 1941 they went to the Balkans, and then to the USSR. Armed with Leica and Rolleiflex cameras, some of these soldiers were officially commissioned as photographers, while others were asked by their commanders to snap records of events. Among them were trainees who knew about the Bauhaus, and other, older, men who could remember Weimar. Some excelled at formal portraiture, others were storytellers, stylists or humanists who wept at what they saw. The style and content of their work changed along with the collective mood after 1942, a change that is discernible in the photographs themselves. Celebrated author and art historian Ian Jeffrey - author of How to Read a Photograph and The Photography Book - has trawled through these albums, picking out the most compelling of these works to create an intimate record of anonymous lives experiencing the unprecedented.
