Autism does not always present in clear or typical ways, especially when accompanied by other neurodevelopmental or medical conditions. Autism in Complex Presentations brings together an international team of clinicians and researchers to provide a practical, evidence-based guide to the assessment and recognition of autism in such contexts. Chapters explore the challenges professionals face when standard tools fall short: when autism is difficult to identify, when co-occurring conditions obscure the picture, and when diagnostic clarity is crucial for appropriate support. The book explores a range of key topics such as demand avoidance, selective mutism, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, epilepsy, vision impairment, down syndrome, and preterm birth. Each chapter includes a clinical vignette to bridge theory and practice, alongside insights from young people and their families to highlight the lived experience of navigating complex assessment journeys.Designed for professionals working in paediatrics, psychiatry, psychology, neuropsychology, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, nursing, and education, this book offers guidance for those involved in recognizing and supporting autism across a wide range of clinical settings. While not specifically written for families, its content may also be of interest to parents, carers, and individuals seeking a deeper understanding of autism in its more complex forms

Congenital or early-onset disorders of the nervous system have a profound and lifelong impact on the lives of children and their families.  Diseases of the Nervous System in Childhood provides up-to-date information on the full range of these neurological disorders, from fetal and neonatal neurology to adolescence.Movement disorders, epilepsies and seizure disorders, metabolic diseases, auditory and visual disorders, and genetic anomalies are among the many topics covered in this text.  Extensive reference lists at the end of each chapter guide the clinician to further relevant reading. This fourth edition retains the patient-focussed, clinical approach of its predecessors. The international team of editors and contributors has honoured the request of the late Jean Aicardi, that his book remain ‘resolutely clinical’, which distinguishes Diseases of the Nervous System in Childhood from other texts in the field. This edition: Is completely revised and updatedIncludes latest developments in genetic advancesContains new chapters on basal ganglia diseases and psychogenic disordersHas an easy-to-use one volume format with full-colour illustrations

Individuals with childhood-onset physical and developmental disabilities often have special needs around exercise and physical activity. However, most books on this topic are written for exercise science experts who may not always be the frontline service provider. This book provides clear and evidence-based information on how to evaluate, train, and foster physical activity and fitness in individuals with childhood-onset disabilities safely across the lifespan. It is written for frontline service providers, such as clinicians and other rehabilitation professionals, as well as individuals with childhood-onset physical and developmental disabilities and their families. The authors thereby respond to specific needs and enable multiple parties to lead more physically active lives. Themes include physical fitness and activity assessment and training, safe engagement, measurement of activity levels and progress, and responses to pain. It includes disorder-specific chapters that apply the general principles of physical activity training to specific diagnoses including autism and juvenile arthritis.

This Clinic in Developmental Medicine describes a meticulous survey of germinal matrix/intraventricular haemorrhage in preterm infants. The babies weighed 501-2000g at their birth in three New Jersey counties between 1984 and 1987. They were studied prospectively with cranial ultrasound; the findings were correlated with very detailed pathological examination of the brains of those who died, and with later outcome in the survivors. The numbers studied in this population-based sample were large enough both to test and to generate hypotheses about the causes and consequences of haemorrhage.

Photosensitive epilepsy is a relatively rare condition in which convulsions are precipitated by visual stimuli. The authors have spent almost 30 years studying this condition and have assembled the largest cohort of patients ever studied by one centre. Their previous book on the subject (1975) became the standard text on this condition. This book reviews the earlier studies, reviews all the literature on this condition in humans and details the many studies that have since been carried out, including studies on drug therapy, the long term prognosis for the condition, pattern sensitivity, video game epilepsy, and convulsions precipitated by other video material. In addition there is advice on procedures to reduce the risk of stimulation from television as well as such factors as the genetics of photosensitivity. This is the most comprehensive text available.

It is often difficult to decide whether a preschool child who does not communicate effectively has a developmental disorder limited to language, has behaviours that indicate autism with or without mental deficiency, or across-the-board mental deficiency without autistic features. All of these disorders denote abnormal brain development, but standard medical and neurologic examinations and tests such as brain imaging, EEGs, chromosome and chemical tests rarely provide an answer. Careful attention to the child's language and behaviour, ability to play creatively, and analysis of neuropsychologic tests and language are much more informative for arriving at a correct diagnosis. This is one of the largest multidisciplinary studies which has considered the problem of making a diagnosis among these often confusing and difficult to test young children and considers explicitly the practical consequences of using different criteria for making a diagnosis.

Disabled children often have feeding difficulty. Choking, food spillage and protracted mealtimes can pose enormous problems for their carers and the accompanying nutritional deficit imposes additional burdens on the affected child. The aetiology of these problems is placed in context by a detailed description of normal feeding development in infants. The often under-recognised nutritional and neurodevelopmental consequences of inadequate nutrient intake together with the respiratory complications and the important problems of constipation and drooling which may accompany oro-motor dysfunction are detailed. The clinical and nutritional assessment and the application of diagnostic imaging techniques in the evaluation of such children are described. The methods of management of these children's problems form the core of this volume and they range from oro-motor therapy to various techniques for enteral feeding. The ethical issues raised by the vigorous intervention needed to improve the nutritional state of severely disabled children is explored, together with the need to provide ongoing psychological support for their carers.

The central focus of this book is the development of skilled motor actions by children; commonplace but vital actions such as maintaining posture, walking, reaching and grasping, and manipulating objects and tools. It represents a state-of-the art report on motor development linking neurophysiological and neuropsychological approaches. Using examples from both normal and pathological development, contributions study pre and postnatal brain development and its relationship to movement, the importance of fetal movements, postural control in children, the neurobiology of locomotor development, neural mechanisms of grasping and typical patterns of behavioural change. New theoretical developments including adaptive model theory, dynamic systems theory, and the relationship between variability and stability in skill development are also critically reviewed.

This volume considers the neurodevelopmental disorders such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, clumsiness and indeed all those learning difficulties to be found in a 'normal' school population with an IQ of more than 70. Specific ideas about the causes of these disorders are presented along with very practical preventative and management information which will be welcomed by a wide range of professionals with an interest in paediatrics, neurology, developmental and educational psychology.

This is a very practical book on the value of behavioural techniques in the treatment of children with various disorders including hyperactivity, conduct problems, autism and communication difficulties. Written by an international group of experts, it will provide practitioners in the field with a clear picture of the value of behavioural methodology. It also stresses the necessary assessment and evaluation procedures required in order to implement the techniques appropriately.

Clinics in Developmental Medicine No. 147 The hand is a remarkable organ which is characteristic of primates and most highly developed in man. This book deals with the evolution and development of hand function, with the structure of the hand and with the hand as a perceptual system. Neurophysiology and psychology of hand function are included, as are problems of disability. With expert interdisciplinary contributions from around the world, this wide-ranging overview is sure to be of value to all those interested in hand function, development, pathology and therapy.

Clinics in Developmental Medicine No. 148 This is the second edition of the manual describing a popular and practical tool for the clinical neurological examination of the newborn. In addition to a number of developments on the original scheme in the light of clinical and research experience, the new manual also facilitates the recording and performance of the examination by providing clear information on its administration, aided by illustrative diagrams. A new feature is the inclusion of useful scoring tables at the back of the book. Other new sections include a simplified version of the examination suited to inexperienced staff, applicable both for screening and for use in developing countries, and a revised proforma which may be used for the follow-up of infants beyond the neonatal period. There is also a new section describing clinical patterns in newborns with brain lesions and their correlation with imaging and neurological findings.

Peripheral neuropathies are diseases which affect the neuromuscular apparatus between the muscles or sensory receptors and connections in the spinal cord and the brain. They affect approximately 20-30% of children attending neuromuscular clinics. Uniquely, this text deals exclusively with such disorders in children and draws together the rapidly expanding but widely scattered knowledge in the field. It is a highly practical text, written by clinical neurologists with long experience in physiology, histopathology and management of neuropathy. This second edition retains the basic structure of its successful predecessor and continues to be liberally illustrated with real case histories. However, extensive revisions and expansion of the text have enabled it to encompass the major developments, including recent advances in molecular biology and therapy of metabolic and inflammatory neuropathies.

This book reviews clinical models for working with developmental disability and behavioural problems. The first section explores the causes and nature of behaviour problems amongst people with physical, learning, language and sensory disabilities, and some key specific conditions. The second section describes the assessment approaches that clinicians will find most useful in evaluating behaviour. The third section covers treatment approaches emphasising the importance of a broad, eclectic approach. The contributors, all acknowledged experts in their fields of paediatrics, psychology and psychiatry, provide a comprehensive overview of this set of major challenges, emphasising the importance of auditory detection, understanding, measurement and treatment.
