As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner is consistently ranked among the greatest novels of the twentieth century.Set in Faulkner's fictional Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi, the book tells of the hapless and tormented Bundren family. Addie, the long-suffering matriarch, is lying on her deathbed, tended by her daughter, Dewey Dell. Outside, her son Cash is crafting the coffin she will soon need. The novel tells not only of Addie’s death but of the family’s arduous trek thirty miles away to bury her among her ancestors in accordance with her wishes. The journey, by wagon, takes them over a flooding bridge, where the coffin containing Addie’s unembalmed body is nearly washed away.Faulkner, telling the story through the stereoscopic view of fifteen different characters, paints a starkly beautiful portrait not only of a family’s confrontation with death but their twisted and ambivalent relations with one another: Anse, the shiftless and selfish father; the oldest son, Darl, tormented by love for a mother that is not reciprocated; the second son, Jewel, favored by Addie but who does not love her; Dewey Dell, the pregnant unwed teen; and the youngest, Vardaman, who views the panoply with the naive but acute perception of a little boy.The title comes from a line in Homer’s Odyssey that is spoken by Agamemnon in the underworld: "As I lay dying, the woman with the dog's eyes would not close my eyes as I descended into Hades."Published in 1930, As I Lay Dying marks the beginning of Faulkner’s mature period, which includes Sanctuary, Light in August, and Absalom! Absalom! and solidifies his position as what many consider to be the greatest American author of the twentieth century. Ralph Ellison, author of Invisible Man, called him “the greatest artist the South has produced.” William Faulkner (1897-1962) won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1949. In his famous acceptance speech, he said, “I believe that man will not merely endure: he will prevail. He is immortal, not because he alone among creatures has an inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance.”

The Bare-Knuckled Truths of Edward BernaysYou may not know Edward Bernays, but Edward Bernays knows you. His 1923 classic Crystallizing Public Opinion set down the principles that corporations and government have used to influence and manipulate public attitudes over the past century, and the mass media continues that practice today. This seminal work on how public opinion is created and shaped, offers a glimpse into the world of propaganda and advertising. Bernays, who believes the public behaves like a herd of animals, shows how ideas about what to eat, and how we should look and dress can easily be put into our heads. He outlines how the masses can be controlled in whatever way the influencer chooses. This original and complete edition includes a new Introduction by PEN Award-winning historian, Mitch Horowitz.By adapting the ideas that this pioneering PR strategist, who considered himself part of an intellectual and economic elite entitled to govern public opinion and global policy, governments and advertisers have been able to “regiment the mind.” His work explains the popularity of today’s TV news shout-fests and angry social media posts because, as Bernays observed, crowds love a contest. This crowd-contest dynamic fuels the hostile and sarcastic comment chains that populate Twitter, Facebook, and other social media outlets. We know that beliefs can gain sudden popularity based on the public’s proclivity for seven factors: “flight-fear, repulsion-disgust, curiosity-wonder, pugnacity-anger, self-display-elation, self-abasement-subjection, parental-love-tenderness.”Named as one of the 100 most influential Americans of the 20th Century by Life magazine, Bernays’ clients included the American Tobacco Company, several U.S. presidents and the opponents of the Guatemalan revolution. This Austrian-born nephew of Sigmund Freud made a study of the different ways to use propaganda. "Crystallizing Public Opinion" was his first major effort to sell himself and his philosophy of public relations.

Within You Is a Force Greater Than You've Ever ImaginedJoseph Murphy's 1963 classic The Power of Your Subconscious Mind gave millions of readers a radical new estimate of their possibilities. In his easily digestible volume, Murphy communicated the "hidden" truth of life: you are as your mind is. This is the master key that impacts wealth, health, career, relationships, and all forms of expression. The lasting success of Murphy's work rests on how it affirms and harnesses our deepest instincts about the extraordinary possibilities of thought. As Murphy explores: Every religious, psychological, and ethical philosophy agrees: What you think dramatically affects your quality of life. Your subconscious mind harbors insightful and creative power-if properly harnessed, this suggestive power can solve problems and shape circumstances in ways you never imagined possible. The power of your inner mind is indifferent: Your subconscious picks up on and carries out what you dwell upon, for good or ill. You can tap the reservoirs of your subconscious by setting aside time just before going to sleep at night to reflect on a cherished aim or solution to a problem. Never force a mental image. Forced effort brings failure. Once you have acted to impress your subconscious, do not dwell on the ways and means of accomplishment-these will reach your conscious mind in the form of hunches, happy accidents, and breakthrough ideas. In this unabridged edition of Murphy's landmark, scholar of esotericism Mitch Horowitz provides a new historical introduction and assessment of the master's work, along with a reliable and rigorous timeline that corrects many misperceptions about the author's life. Mitch's supplemental readings bring Murphy's insights-particularly in matters of health-into the 21st century.

Lucius Annaeus Seneca (4 B.C-A.D. 65), the chief advisor to the emperor Nero, was the power behind the throne in Ancient Rome. He is most famous for his writings on Stoic ideology, in which philosophy is a practical form of self-improvement.Seneca's letters address the issues of life and death confronting every generation while upholding the ideals of Stoicism - valuing courage and friendship, avoiding corruption and self-indulgence, striving to achieve a good life while being immune to life's setbacks, and enjoying life without the fear of dying.Written with humanity in an intimate and conversational style, Seneca criticizes the cruel treatment of slaves and focuses on the Roman values of courage, rationality and self-control.Despite facing ill health, exile and danger, Seneca was able to retain his cosmopolitan attitude and sharp wit, all the while, demonstrating the dignity of the individual in this timeless compilation for future generations to follow. This edition selects the best letters with the modern translation by R.M. Gummere. It is read by Grover Gardner, who has narrated over 1,200 books. He was the Publishers Weekly "Audiobook Narrator of the Year" and is among AudioFile magazine's "Best Voices of the Century".

A New Perspective on Machiavelli's Practical Ideas and Fuller DimensionsSince its posthumous publication in 1532, Machiavelli’s treatise on claiming and holding power has been synonymous with deception, ruthlessness, and even brutality. History generally regards the author of The Prince as a one-note schemer and callous plotter. Some contemporary critics even call him a satirist. In this newly introduced and annotated edition of Machiavelli’s most enduring work, scholar of esotericism Mitch Horowitz elucidates the greater spectrum of the pragmatic philosopher’s ideas to reveal a figure concerned not just with amoral cunning but possessed of standards and ideals rarely appreciated in modern assessments."A fresh look," Mitch writes in his introduction, “often reveals the unexpected. Machiavelli imbued The Prince with a greater sense of purpose and ethics than is commonly understood…I believe that some who encounter The Prince today will recognize subtleties missing from the value-free rationalism prominent in some precincts of our culture.”Mitch’s new assessment and chapter notes highlight practical lessons that give The Prince its immortality. Not all of Machiavelli’s advice remains pertinent or possible in today’s world; nor would most readers wish to act on all of it. But, as Mitch explores, the political philosopher’s overarching principles warrant careful scrutiny and evaluation. This unabridged edition of The Prince is drawn from N.H. Thomson’s 1910 translation, published as volume 36 of The Harvard Classics. Antiquated spellings and grammar are updated. Appendices reproduce aphorisms from both The Prince and Machiavelli’s seminally important Discourses on Livy (1531). Pull quotes emphasize key points and Mitch summarizes takeaways following each chapter.
