A study into the Latin history of Norway Historia Norwegie that takes as its point of departure the following question: Could it have been written in connection with the establishment of a national arch bishop seat in Nidaros in 1152/53? This study is the first one to attempt to place Historia Norwegie in a wider, contemporary scope.

What is the soul of poetry? The most influential answer was probably given in Aristotle's Poetics, but even within that tradition which claimed the authority of Aristotle, the answers have differed widely. To Aristotle, the soul of poetry was one instance of mimesis, namely that construction of plot which he called mimesis of action, or muthos. However, in the Poetics alone, mimesis is used in several different meanings, and Aristotle does not distinguish clearly between them. The tremendous influence of his Poetics and the concept of mimesis may in fact be due to its elusiveness. Through tradition, it has been interpreted in many ways and translated into a number of terms, which do not always seem to have very much in common. This study is an attempt to clarify the Aristotelian tradition by demonstrating how interpretations of Aristotle's Poetics have vacillated between two particularly dominating instances of mimesis. The vocabulary may be the same, but the definition of the soul of poetry may differ substantially depending on which instance dominates. The study begins with an analysis of Aristotle's Poetics from a rhetorical point of view, as Aristotle developed his poetological categories inspired by those of rhetoric, and all interpretations of the Poetics up until the 18th century have been made from a rhetorical understanding of literature. Subsequent chapters then study exemplary reinterpretations of the soul of poetry within the Aristotelian tradition, beginning with Averroës, whose Arabic commentary was translated into Latin in the 13th century and for a long time was considered tantamount to Aristotle himself, receptions in the Italian Renaissance, French classicism and the influential launch of the "Fine Arts" by Charles Batteux in the 18th century, and his German counterparts. Three concluding chapters apply the perspective on issues concerning the aesthetics of the sublime, the symbol, and the role of emotions in the system of genres.

Text in Danish.

The intricate relationship between the erotic and the literary is a recurring theme in Western literature, with a starting-point in Plato's dialogues. Our need to talk, write, and read about love has resulted in a rich tradition, ranging from theoretical and philosophical discussions of Eros to love romance and poetry, clearly marked by the classical-heritage but continuously unfolding and rewriting itself. This present volume aims at providing both students and scholars with a series of discussions of this long tradition of reading and writing the erotic, seen from a number of different perspectives. A certain emphasis is placed on Classical Philology, but other contributors represent Byzantine studies, Iranian languages, History of ideas, and Comparative literature. Across this range of writers and disciplines, this collection of essays offers stimulating and original perspectives on how Eros has been appropriated in a variety of ways for purposes of producing narratives of love.

This book is the first detailed analysis of an exquisitely illuminated thirteenth-century Parisian manuscript (The Royal Library, Copenhagen) which was owned by Christina of Norway (1234-1262), daughter of Håkon IV and wife of Philip of Castile and León. New information is provided about the Psalter's medieval and later components, its liturgical and other functions, missing illuminations and texts, as well as its provenance and date. Furthermore, the stylistic and iconographic similarities between the Psalter and some of the most important manuscripts illuminated in Paris in the Period, like the three-volume Moralised Bibles, are discussed. Suggestions also are made about the meanings the texts and images might have had for their intended audience.

Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen is among the 10 best princely treasures of Europe. It has been preserved in its natural surroundings and about 95% of the more than 1000 objects have survived. The first volume tells the history of the collection and ends with an art historical summary of its contents. This account builds partly upon hitherto unknown evidence, for example travel diaries from foreign archives. The finds offer a new picture of royal political propaganda and of the making of Danish national identity. The last two volumes contain a catalogue raisonne. Each object is listed with an extract of the proper inventories, an illustrated description with reference to parallels abroad, and a bibliography.

Thorvaldsens Museum opened in central Copenhagen in 1848. The great Danish sculptor had arranged to donate his own works of art and his collections to the city, provided that the museum be built for the purpose; it would become his tomb. The Museum was decorated with a colourful frieze depicting the triumphant arrival of Thorvaldsen and his magnificent works of art in Copenhagen from the artist's studio in Rome. The dramatic frieze, designed by the Danish artist Jørgen Sonne, made a big splash at the time, and has captivated visitors ever since. In this learned and lively study of the Museum and its frieze, John Henderson shows how the frieze takes inspiration from classical models, including the Parthenon and Roman monuments, in delivering the finest neoclassical art, and its cosmopolitan European culture, to the attention of a newly modernized public. This beautifully illustrated book breaks new ground in Danish History of Art, bringing an important and unique Danish work of art to an international audience with the blessing of the Museum.

As the locus of the Christian ritual, the altar has often been the object of artistic attention. Decorating the Lords Table treats the profusion of sumptuously ornate altars produced in various media during the European Middle Ages. Many of the altars display images of Christ, the saints, and Biblical personages, often in conjunction with narrative cycles depicting the lives of Christ and various saints. Investigating interrelationships between image and altar in the light of important recent methodological developments in the field of art history, the essays in this book treat themes such as the human body, materiality, pictorial narrative, and liturgy, and focus on evidence from Italian, German, and Scandinavian contexts.

Since its start in 1967 Ethnologia Europaea has acquired a central position in the international cooperation between ethnologists in the different European countries. It is, however, a journal of topical interest not only for ethnologists but also for anthropologists, social historians and others studying the social and cultural forms of everyday life in recent and historical European societies. This journal appears twice a year, sometimes as a thematic issue.

Three questions that loom large in moral and political philosophy are these: Can deontological moral constraints be justified? When, if ever, are we morally responsible for what we do? How is the ideal of equality best configured? 'Deontology, Responsibility and Equality' deals with selected aspects of these three broad questions. It discusses critically certain attempts by Frances Kamm and Thomas Nagel (among others) to account for the impermissibility of minimising violations in terms of moral status. Also, it challenges the view that there is a morally relevant difference between doing and allowing harm and, especially, between killing and letting die. In relation to the second question, it concentrates on recent developments within compatibilist accounts of moral responsibility prompted by the work of Harry Frankfurt. It challenges his purported refutation of the principle of alternative possibilities as well as certain positive compatibilist, identification-based accounts of responsibility. Finally, with respect to the last question, the book focuses on how we should understand the ideal of equality of opportunity and the moral significance of the distinction between social and natural inequalities. It defends equality of outcome over equality of opportunity and the view that natural inequalities are, if bad, no less bad than social inequalities. This book has been accepted at the University of Copenhagen for a public defence as a Dr Phil dissertation.

Cahiers de l'Institut du Moyen- ge Grec et Latin publishes work done in the Department of Greek and Latin at the University of Copenhagen, or in collaboration with the Department. The research presented mainly has to do with the Latin trivium and quadrivium, and with Byzantine music. CIMAGL publishes no book reviews.

The concepts of genre and ritual are central for the overall occupation with the relationship between the History of the Arts and the History of Christianity in Western Culture. The present volume was planned on the basis of the first annual international conferences at the Centre for the Study of the Cultural Heritage of Medieval Rituals, University of Copenhagen: a collection of 15 essays with a wide range of topics both in terms of chronology and subject matter written. The book is a special issue of the journal TRANSfiguration.

TEXT IN ITALIAN. The work of A Tabucchi, one of Italy's greatest contemporary writers, is imbued with the topic of individual identity. His texts query the self-perception, the relation with the Other and the relation with the historical and cultural world while expressing at all these levels an experience of dissolution: the self is fragmented and fragile; the Other is always absent and missed, and instead of being engaged in the present world, the subject lives in an intangible reality that does not make any sense. This profound existential anxiety and the weakening of identity are emphasised by the very way of narrating of Tabucchi which is disconnected, enigmatic and full of silences. The book by Pia Schwarz Lausten describes various manifestations of the above-mentioned experience through the textual analysis of a series of figures and motives such as memory and absence, reversal and multiplicity, the said and the unsaid, history and commitment. Some of these motives involve on the one hand existential and philosophical aspects, and on the other esthetical and literary values. The analysis is based on two theoretical perspectives that in different ways describe an overcoming of a classical subjectivity in favour of an idea of which the Other or Alterity is an essential element to the definition of individual identity: M. Bachtin's concept of "dialogism" and G. Vattimo's "weak thought". The former serves to define the narrating subject in Tabucchi's texts characterised by different discourse levels and others' words. The latter concept describes the position of the subject of post-modernity determined by a weakening of the strong structures of modern thought. The book is written in Italian.

Much work is required to ensure the well-being of the manuscripts in the care of our libraries, archives and other collections and the regular seminars in Copenhagen provide a good opportunity for conservators, archivists, librarians and those who work with manuscripts to meet and discuss their problems. The eighth seminar deals among other things with wooden bindings, the manufacture of parchment, the conservation of embroidered bindings, the study of paint layers, the restoration of heat-damage parchment, binding decoration and hand tools for Ottoman period manuscripts, biomonitering of rare books and documents, German stamped bindings, new recipes for the conservation of leather and parchment, as well as codicology and palæography. The book is well illustrated and contains references and a list of manuscripts.

This volume contains 11 new papers on Shakespeare written by members of the Department of English at the University of Copenhagen and other Danish universities plus a few international Shakespeare scholars. They fit into an overall theme and are included because they are about Shakespeare -- as text, as theatre, in his age, and through the ages. Beside showing many different ways of thinking and writing about Shakespeare, the eleven articles fall into a pattern if read together in the order they are printed. The papers are varied and wide-ranging: contemporary contexts, tradition, language and style, performance, translation and modern appropriation.

A unique situation exists in the Nordic countries where there is a Lutheran majority living in ecumenical cooperation with other churches and ecclesiastical communities. This book attempts to shed light on what the churches have discovered they hold in common and on areas where they recognise that there are divergencies between them, both in relation to ordination and ministry, and in particular to the theology and terminology of ordination. The book brings together the research and insights of 23 researchers from all the Nordic countries studying more than 200 different kinds of 'ordination' rites from the Orthodox and Roman Catholic as well as Lutheran and non-Lutheran protestant traditions. After an introduction to the churches in the Nordic countries, the book presents 19 case studies from the Nordic countries. The last part includes some general ecumenical and liturgical perspectives on ordination and rites presented by international researchers.

This collection of articles covering the time span from the Late Middle Ages to the twentieth century intends to challenge the current neglect of the interplay between esoteric knowledge and the visual arts. 'Art and Alchemy' indicates that alchemy indeed has several connections with art by examining some of the pictorial and literary books that disseminated alchemical symbols and ideas, delving into images, which in one way or another can be shown to appropriate and interpret alchemical ideas or environments, and expanding the scope of alchemical imagery by indicating structural affinities between alchemical processes and artistic creation.

Danish Yearbook of Philosophy - Volume 39

Classica et Mediaevalia is an international periodical, published annually, with articles written by Danish and International scholars. The articles are mainly written in English, but also in French and German. The periodical deals from a philological point of view with Classical Antiquity in general and topics such as history of law and philosophy and the medieval ecclesiastic history. It covers the period from the Greco-Roman Antiquity until the Late Middle Ages.

Text in German. This volume is the first edition of an 8.80m long demotic account papyrus -- one of the longest extant papyri. P Carlsberg 409 provides detailed information on the delivery and distribution of wine at Edfu in the year 132/131 BC, i.e. the 39th regnal year of Ptolemy VIII Euergetes II. The edition contains a palaeographical and philological commentary as well as a study of the administration and economy of the Horus temple at Edfu in Upper Egypt.

'Ethnologia Europaea' has set itself the task of breaking down not only the barriers which divide research into Europe from general ethnology, but also the barriers between the various national schools within the continent. With this manifesto 'Ethnologia Europaea' was started in 1969. Since then, it has acquired a central position in the international co-operation between ethnologists in the various European countries, in the East as well as in the West. It is, however, a journal of topical interest, not only for ethnologists, but also for anthropologists, social historians and others studying the social and cultural forms of everyday life in recent and historical European societies.

The Carlsberg Papyri 6 (CNI 29) contains the edition of a new manuscript with Petese Stories from the Tebtunis temple library, dating to the period around 100 AD. The Petese Stories is a compilation of seventy stories about the virtues and vices of women. The numerous stories were compiled on the orders of the prophet Petese of Heliopolis that they may serve as a literary testament by which he would be remembered. Petese was, according to literary tradition, Plato's Egyptian instructor in astrology. The composition seems to have been modelled on the fundamental Myth of the Sun's Eye. The overall structural pattern of the text is very similar to the Arabian Nights; a frame story forms the introduction as well as the fabric into which the long series of shorter tales are woven. Among the stories preserved in the new manuscript one is particularly remarkable in that it is known from a translation by Herodotus, the so-called Pheros Story (Book II, chap. 111).

Mainly dedicated to hieratic manuscripts from the Tebtunis temple library and contains contributions by Alexandra von Lieven, J F Quack, and Kim Ryholt. The Tebtunis temple library is the only ancient Egyptian temple library of which substantial remains are preserved, and the immense material -- estimated at several hundred manuscripts -- makes it by far the richest, single source of Egyptian literary texts. The present volume is introduced by a survey of the hieratic and hieroglyphic manuscripts from the temple library. The main genres are discussed and conclusions are drawn concerning the sort of compositions transmitted in hieratic as well as the cultural values which lie behind the choices. The survey is followed by full editions of a series of religious texts: an Osiris liturgy, the Ritual of Bringing Sokar out of the Shetit (previously known only from monumental hieroglyphic versions from temples and manuscripts for funerary use), the Votive Cubit (otherwise known essentially from fragments of the original stone cubits), the Nine-Headed Bes (a parallel to the famous illustrated Brooklyn papyrus but with a fuller description of how the practitioner should proceed), and the Ritual of Opening the Mouth (one version written for Sobek, lord of Tebtunis, the others for Sokar-Osiris). The volume further includes a slip of papyrus with four book-titles, a papyrus with a coloured drawing of an offering scene, and a decorated band for tying up a papyrus roll.

Mythology is usually reserved for non-Christian religions. However, the adoption of Christianity in Northern and East-Central Europe between c. 1000 and 1300 can be adequately described as a myth-making process: local saints were added to the Christian pantheon in all regions entering Latin Europe. The present collection explores the links between local sanctity and the making of national myths in medieval historical writing. By bringing together specialists in history and literature of the European periphery in question, the case is made that the writing of history and saints lives from this pioneering period should been analysed together as mainly successful attempts at creating cultural foundation myths. The book is based on a conference held in Bergen in November 2003 on Historiography and the Holy and forms part of the research programme at the interdisciplinary Centre of Medieval Studies (CMS) at the University of Bergen.

This book offers a complex and thought-provoking anthology of critical essays respecting the notion of the witness and phenomena of witnessing in Western culture since the Holocaust. 'Witness' presents a new body of work in the field by an international collective of scholars concerned with resituating witnessing in its specifically contemporary problematic. This volume thus not only establishes links with existing, currently canonical contributions to witness literature -- from Primo Levi through Victor Klemperer to Imre Kertész -- it also goes on to provide a set of analyses of exemplary and very recent literary works in that area. Most significantly, Witness extends and changes the previous scholarly tendency to focus strongly on historical evidence and the witness' vocalisation of true remembrance so as to include difficult theoretical and interpretative questions posed by studies today of traumatic experience, amnesia, visual culture, new media, and technology. Amongst others, the book includes contributions from the acclaimed Romanian-German author Herta Müller, and such an internationally recognised scholar in trauma studies as Cathy Caruth.

Brings into focus central aspects of recent developments in European film and media culture. Through studies of both film and television the question of national identity, European integration and globalisation is analysed in a both Eastern and Western European context. This volume offers case studies of the more historical and institutional context of European film television, studies of European TV drama, children's television, TV entertainment formats, and comparative studies of European art cinema and art television and American (Hollywood) films and TV-serials.
