Facing the disarray and disorientation around his father's death, a man contends with the strange and haunting power of the house his parents once lived in. At the same time, he embarks on an eccentric side project, building a tank in the dining room of his parents' home to house four manta rays. As he grows increasingly obsessed with his new project, his grip on reality seems to slip. Tender, absorbing and shockingly funny, this extraordinary first novel from critical theorist Nicholas Royle confronts the mad hand of grief and celebrates the power of language.

An extraordinary portrait of family life, mother-son relationships and bereavement.

There is strength, sensuality, and beautiful attention to the natural world in these poems, balanced with a dry wit and tongue-in-cheek humour. From documented attempts to capture voices from the spirit world, to explorations of near-death and out-of-body experiences, to the reworking of some of the great classics of mythology, these poems embrace a range of subject matter, and surprise and move the reader.

Poe's voice is confident, moving and often funny, as they reveal to us a very personal account of autism, mental illness, gender and sexual identity. Charlotte witnesses their own behaviour with a wry humour as they sympathises with those who care for them, yet all the while challenging the neurotypical narratives of autism as something to be 'fixed'. Punctuated by their poetry, this is an exuberant, inspiring, life-changing insight into autism from a viewpoint almost entirely missing from public discussion.

Just as she starts her new life, the dream is shattered when a body washes up beside the boat, the bruised face of her friend Caddy. Unable to admit she knows Caddy from fear of revealing her stripper past, and trying to protect her lover Dylan, Genevieve is trapped. As the sanctuary of the boatyard is threatened and her life seems increasingly at risk, the story of how she came to be so out of her depth is revealed in a dramatic conclusion.

Ellis is a quirky soul - awkward, sensitive and with an often embarrasing habit of speaking his thoughts out loud. Between early attempts at relationships, building jobs, flat-sharing and drug-addled nights on the beach, he muddles his way towards adulthood. Family banter is Ellis' lifeline - a counterpoint to the constant heartache of his desire to know something, anything, about his mother. Set against the background of 1980s rural Kent, Connolly's novel is a moving portrait of growing up.

When her estranged mother makes a dramatic appearance on the scene, Lois must look to something far more radical to sort out her personal life.
