The Unfinished Revolution is essential reading not only for educators and policymakers, but for anyone who has looked at the difficulties faced by schools and the communities around them and thought, "There must be a better way." Drawing on a vast body of evidence and relevant research, the book covers: * How humans learn, and why our innate talents for learning through community involvement clash with current school systems. * The historical reasons for the demise of learning within the community and the rapid ascent of mass education. * The impact changing economies and working practices have had on family life, and on our expectations of schools. * The English experience, showing how difficult it has proved over the past 50 years to move away from entrenched systems of education. * How educational practices need to change in order to promote lifelong learning. Abbott and Ryan believe that education should be about far more than teaching the basics and improving test scores, and offer up their own compelling vision of how and what children should learn in the 21st century.

This work takes the principles of how to enhance learning, as established in many other books in this series, one step further. It applies these principles to staff, to staff development and finally to management and leadership. It seeks out, and applies, a coherence of approach to the whole learning community. Furthermore it explains how the American Critical Skills Programme incorporates all the key principles of learning in a comprehensive, practical and outstandingly effective teaching programme, which can also be used to promote staff and organizational development.

This text offers a framework in which the intuitions of individual teachers have been synthesised into a broader understanding of how learning happens. It suggests a holistic model, which strives to integrate a number of learning theories. The book uses the metaphorical notion of the "learner's journey", to discuss how learning happens over time. The learner is the "hero" of the adventure, who having been "called to action" travels on an exciting but sometimes arduous journey from the "ordinary world", towards the ultimate reward of independent learning and self-development.

This book and the associated videos look at the issue that concerns teachers most - that is, what it means to be an effective teacher. Five secondary school teachers have been filmed and analysed using recent research findings. This helps to make clear the combination of teacher skills and professional characteristics needed to produce effective teching. This resource can be used by: - teachers as a mechanism for discussion during school INSET concerning classroom management; - individual teachers at home who may wish to reveiw their own approach to teaching; - ITT students who may wish to supplement their own classroom observation with examples of effective teachers in other schools; - training colleges who wish to give their students examples of effective teachers and use this as a means of discussion; - teachers who are reflecting on their teaching practice as they approach their Threshold Application; - teachers who have gone through the Threshold and wish to move on to the next stage of Performance Management In each case, the extensive manual outlines each of the individual teacher's intentions and aspirations and then allows you to compare this with some 30 minutes of video focusing on their classroom practice. Finally, these two impressions are compared with the designated features of effective teaching and learning as outlined in the Hay McBer report.

In the next five years we are likely to discover with increasing certainty how learning happens and how we can best support learners of all abilities and needs. ICT in all its forms will have a dramatic and catalytic role to play in this learning evolution - especially as we learn more about the subtle interplay between hearing, seeing and doing. Yet at the moment we risk confusing the catalyst with the effect - if our gaze stays fixed on the technology, the dramatic learning opportunities it might encourage could pass us by. As if by magic, just as our knowledge and understanding of accelerated learning theory is developing, we have new classroom tools to help us support many of its key principles. Carefully used, data projectors linked to computers can fill a classroom with wall with a still or moving image, and provide new opportunities for showing the big picture at the start of a lesson and for rolling a scrolling review of what has been learned at the end. Step by step, author and Guardian columnist, John Davitt explains how you can make the most of this opportunity. This book outlines five practical, whole-school ICT projects that will inspire staff and pupils alike. Many ideas for the use of ICT across the curriculum are provided along with guidance on intranets, environment, turboteaching and zoning.

Improving teaching is the key to genuine and sustainable school improvement. Improvement involves persuading teachers to change and develop their practice but, as anyone who has ever tried will testify, this is far from easy. The focus of Tweak to Transform is what head teachers and school leaders can do to manage the change process and improve the quality of teaching in a school. Essentially, Tweak to Transform is a practical handbook that seeks to address three questions. What do we know about change? What do we know about learning? What do we know about leading and managing the improvement process? While there is no single successful recipe for improving teaching in a school, this book attempts to establish some key principles. The result is a collection of thoughts, activities strategies and models that have been developed and successfully implemented in a wide range of schools.

What does 'supporting the school' really mean? What can a staff governor take part in? How can we deal with a misbehaving governor? Do LEA governors have to toe a party line? Should a new head opt to be a governor? Do we have to give the head an annual pay rise? In this collection of articles originally printed in her well-known weekly 'Agenda' advice column in the Times Educational Supplement, Joan Sallis tackles these and many other questions with the humour, humanity and candour for which she is renowned. She defines boundaries, clarifies the representative role of school governors, offers guidance on relations between the head and the governing body, and the principles, procedures and skills that underpin successful team-building, sound decision-making, and honourable behaviour among all those groups which make up the school community. This collection is an essential complement to the best-selling Basics for School governors. It includes a concise summary of new regulations (made under the Education Act 2002) which came out in the summer of 2003, and which could significantly change the way governing bodies work. Not only school governors, head teachers and parents, but anyone who has to manage difficult 'people situations', in any context, will gain valuable insights from the range of experience and wisdom concentrated within these pages.

Leaving school and entering the world of college or work is a major step forward in life. To make their way as successful adults, young people need more than academic achievements. They need confidence in themselves as individuals; an awareness of how to build on their strengths and overcome their weaknesses; a set of personal values to support them through relationships and day-to-day decision-making; an understanding of how their behaviour affects not just themselves but others as well; and the maturity to take responsibility for their own emotional welfare. "Future Directions: Practical Ways to Develop Emotional Intelligence and Confidence" is a practical resource book designed to support teachers as they guide their pupils through the exciting and often perplexing period of transition from child to adult. The authors have been practising as personal development trainers and coaches for over 20 years. Their programmes, acclaimed by students of all ages and abilities, are underpinned by the belief that the emotional well-being of the individual is of paramount importance. This theory forms the basis of this book, which introduces, stage by stage, the life skills that are essential to future success. Topics covered include: developing self-knowledge, building confidence, managing stress, communication skills, making choices, and starting work. Each chapter introduces a topic and sets out plans for several sessions, each with enjoyable and challenging interactive exercises designed to encourage young people to think for themselves rather than look to others for solutions. These exercises are intended to raise points for discussion and to help young people explore sensitive issues with the help of a supportive adult. The session plans can be adapted easily to be applied within a particular curriculum or to meet specific needs outside of a classroom setting. The aim of this book is to equip young people with the personal skills they need to meet the future, and to help them explore sensitive issues within the security of the classroom. Working together through the programme, both pupils and teachers will reap the benefits of increased mutual trust and understanding.

At its heart, learning has been and always will be a personal experience. The term 'personalizing learning' has been increasingly used by policy makers, educational theorists and practitioners alike, but one of the criticisms of it is that it means different things to different people. If it is to have lasting significance, it must unite the strands of thinking to help learners and their teachers achieve new levels of attainment. "Personalizing Learning in the 21st Century" brings together contributions from a wide range of educationalists interested in the idea of personalizing learning. Although the book is intended primarily for teachers and policy makers, it will be of interest to many others, in health education, consultancy, management, research and development, and industrial training. Reading this book should be a personalized learning experience for each and every one of us.
